Rory MacDonald is open to the idea of once again competing inside the Octagon.

‘The Red King’ joined the UFC in 2010 as an undefeated prospect. MacDonald lost his promotional debut against Carlos Condit before running through the welterweight division.

The 32-year-old left the company in 2016 having picked up several high-profile wins over the likes of Nate Diaz, BJ Penn, Jake Ellenberger, Demian Maia, and Tyron Woodley.

Since leaving the UFC, MacDonald has become a champion with Bellator and is now competing in the Professional Fighters League. The Canadian welterweight is scheduled to fight Ray Cooper III in the semi-final of the PFL 2021 season on August 13.

Ahead of that bout, MacDonald spoke to LowKickMMA about the fight which he has been anticipating since the moment he joined the PFL roster.

“I knew eventually we would cross paths,” MacDonald said. “I felt like it was inevitable, you know, he’s a very exciting guy that the PFL really likes to promote and he’s done really well. And obviously, they’re promoting me a lot. So, I think it was a crash course waiting to happen.”

Despite feeling the love from PFL, MacDonald refused to rule out a potential UFC return and explained to us exactly what it would take for him to re-join MMA’s premier promotion.

“It would be interesting to go back there. It would be cool.” MacDonald said. “All the eyes and the attention are there and that’s the big stage. If I were to find my way back there, it would have to be for a fair deal. I fought for the UFC for a long time and I understand how it works, but at this point in my career, I’m also fighting for my family’s future. That’s a very important thing for me.”

Rory MacDonald has an idea on how to improve MMA judging.

This past weekend, we saw several bad decisions at UFC Vegas 32. Francis Ngannou has since spoken out against the extremely poor judging of MMA fights that more often than not leaves unlucky fighters out of pocket.

MacDonald was on the wrong end of a bad call in his last fight. ‘The Red King’ squared off against Gleison Tibau at PFL 5 on June 17. The former Bellator champion seemed to have eased to a decision win after three rounds of fighting before the judges shockingly awarded Tibau a split decision victory.

At the PFL 5 post-fight press conference MacDonald called for an investigation into the result he called a “clear robbery.

In a recent interview with LowKickMMA, MacDonald revealed he was unable to right the wrong done to him at PFL 5, he said.

“We’d looked into what we could do (to overturn the result), but really our hands are tied. There’s nothing we could really have done.”

MacDonald wants to see more ex-fighters judging and also wants to see judges be held accountable for their poor work.

The 32-year-old even suggested a strike-based system to eliminate the bad officials.

“That would help (having ex-fighters judge) and also some accountability,” MacDonald said. “I said something like maybe like a board that would review controversial decisions and scorecards. You know, if it’s too many strikes for a certain judge, they get removed.

“Right now, (in) the current format, these judges just do whatever they want bad, or good and they keep their job and they keep moving forward,” MacDonald added. “But for the people who are fighting and have to live with the consequences is us the fighters. You know, even though we do our end of the job, we end up suffering and they just continue on, get paid, and move forward.”

Do you agree with Rory MacDonald? Would a strike-based system help improve the level of MMA judging?

Rory MacDonald would “love” to compete inside the squared circle.

The former Bellator champion has one eye on the many MMA fighters who are currently migrating to boxing for monster paydays.

On August 29, Tyron Woodley is set to square off against Jake Paul. ‘The Chosen One’ will make his highest ever purse in his professional boxing debut.

MacDonald tells LowKickMMA he is looking forward to watching his former foe square off against Paul.

“I think that’s actually a pretty good fight, to be honest,” MacDonald said. “A lot of people just write off Jake because he’s a YouTube guy and he doesn’t have a lot of fight experience, but from what I seen, the guy can box and he likes to fight. He brings it so I got respect for the guy.

“He goes in there and he fights hard and it’s not like he’s in there and he doesn’t know what he’s doing,” MacDonald added. “He can actually punch and he can punch hard by the looks of it. So, Tyron can’t take him lightly and he’s got to be on his A-game that’s for sure.

“To be honest from just like a boxing perspective. I think Jake could give him a very tough time,” MacDonald concluded. “I like Tyron and we’ve crossed paths before, but it’s not MMA. It’s just with the hands so he’s going to have to be at his best.”

MacDonald would ‘love’ to compete in boxing one day and is excited to see lots of MMA fighters getting paid good money for competing in these crossover bouts.

“Yeah, of course, I’d love to, but again, it would have to be for the right situation. You know, a fair deal,” MacDonald said. “I wouldn’t do it for pennies. I would want to make some money and it’s awesome to see guys making good money too. I am really happy to see a lot of these MMA fighters being able to go into a different combat sport and earn their fair take of things.”

Ray Cooper III Rips MMA Judging: ‘They’re Ruining People’s Lives’

Ray Cooper IIIPFL welterweight king Ray Cooper III is primed and ready ahead of his highly-anticipated playoff bout with Rory MacDonald, and he isn’t planning on leaving it in the judges’ hands. Ray Cooper III

PFL welterweight king Ray Cooper III is primed and ready ahead of his highly-anticipated playoff bout with Rory MacDonald, and he isn’t planning on leaving it in the judges’ hands.

Following the cancellation of the 2020 PFL season, Cooper came into 2021 as almost a forgotten champion in the midst of the hype surrounding MacDonald’s signing with the league. Cooper responded to the forgetful fans by earning back-to-back dominant victories over Jason Ponet and Nikolay Aleksakhin in the regular season.

Many believed that Cooper and MacDonald were destined to meet in the PFL finals this season, but everything changed after MacDonald’s controversial loss to Gleison Tibau in the season finale. MacDonald fell to the former UFC lightweight Tibau by decision despite seemingly dominating the fight in every aspect from start to finish.

Joao Zeferino ended up earning the top overall seed, while MacDonald and Cooper fell to seeds 2 and 3 respectively. While he doesn’t feel any ill-will towards MacDonald, he’s looking to beat him in style.

“I’m a bad matchup for him,” MacDonald said in an exclusive interview with LowKickMMA. “The pressure will be a problem for him and I can’t wait to knock him out.”

Cooper and MacDonald fought on the same card in the PFL regular-season finale, and the Hawaiian-born welterweight got the chance to watch the MacDonald vs. Tibau fight shortly after his own. Many around the MMA community thought it was a clear robbery to give Tibau the win on the judges’ scorecard, and Cooper is not a fan of the current system.

Cooper’s style is aggressive and forward-pushing, leading to a plethora of finishes over his career and dominant victories. He agrees with MacDonald that things need to change when it comes to how fights are scored going forward.

“These judges aren’t fighters, they don’t know any aspect of the game,” Cooper said. “It’s a tough topic because these guys are ruining people’s lives with their decision-making. They don’t know what the hell they’re doing. It’s weird, and someone needs to change this.”

Cooper will have a chance to earn a second-straight PFL welterweight crown, but first, he must work past the fan-favorite MacDonald in the semifinals on Aug. 13.
