Mirko Cro Cop Pulled From Bellator 200 Main Event

Bellator is currently looking for a replacement to fight Roy Nelson.

MMA Legend Mirko Cro Cop has pulled out of the Bellator 200 main event.

Cro Cop was scheduled to fight Roy Nelson in an alternate bout for the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix at the upcoming event.

However, Gareth Davies of the Telegraph Sport is reporting that Cro Cop has pulled out of the fight with an undisclosed injury. It’s believed to be a leg injury.

This was supposed to mark the second time that they would fight each other as they fought back in the UFC in 2011 where Nelson won by TKO.

Cro Cop’s Bellator debut is now on hold as he is in the midst of an eight-fight win streak. During that run, he holds wins over “King Mo” Lawal, Gabriel Gonzaga and Satoshi Ishii.

Ryan Grab, Senior Director of Communications & Athlete Strategy at Bellator MMA, confirmed the news on Monday:

“Mirko Cro Cop has suffered an undisclosed injury and has been forced off the card, and we are looking at replacements, though for the time being Carvalho-Mousasi has been moved to the main event and British standout Michael ‘Venom’ Page against American David Rickels has been elevated up to the co-main event fight.”

Nelson made his Bellator debut at Bellator 183 in September with a hard-fought victory over Javy Ayala. He then suffered a decision loss to Matt Mitrione in his quarter-final bout.

Thus, if they do find a replacement for Cro Cop, this could give Nelson another shot at getting back into the tournament and possible shot at the vacant heavyweight title.

Bellator 200 is set to take place on Friday, May 25, 2018, from The SSE Arena, Wembley. The preliminary card will air online at 7:00 pm EST while the main card will air on Paramount Network at 9:00 PM EST.

The two fighters join a stacked card that already includes middleweight champion Rafael Carvalho (15-1) defending his crown against Gegard Mousasi (43-6-2).

London’s own Michael “Venom” Page (12-0) takes on David “The Caveman” Rickels (19-4, 2 NC).  Also, former titleholder Phil Davis (18-4) takes on Linton Vassell (18-6) in a light heavyweight matchup.

The upcoming heavyweight slugfest between Roy Nelson and Mirko Cro Cop has just become even more important.

Bellator CEO Scott Coker has confirmed to the media at a press conference this week (transcript courtesy of Bloody Elbow) to promote Bellator 198 that the bout will serve as an alternate bout for the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix.

Cro Cop makes his way to Bellator in the midst of an eight-fight win streak. During that run, he holds wins over “King Mo” Lawal, Gabriel Gonzaga and Satoshi Ishii.

Nelson made his Bellator debut at Bellator 183 in September with a hard-fought victory over Javy Ayala.

He then suffered a decision loss to Matt Mitrione in his quarter-final bout. Thus, this could give Nelson another shot at getting back into the tournament and possible shot at the vacant heavyweight title.

“That will be for the first alternate spot. Whoever wins will be the alternate for the tournament in case somebody gets injured.”

If you recall, this marks the second time that they will fight each other as they fought back in the UFC in 2011 where Nelson won by TKO.

A fighter from England’s version of ‘The Jersey Shore’ will make his Bellator debut in the U.K.

Bellator signed undefeated prospect Aaron Chalmers (3-0), best known for his role on MTV England’s “The Geordie Shore,” following a provisional release from his previous BAMMA contract. It was soon announced that Chalmers would take on Ash Griffiths (4-5) at Bellator 200 on May 25 from The SSE Arena in Wembley, England.

Chalmers was most well-known for his role on ‘The Geordie Shore’ since the show’s eighth season beginning in 2014, and also appeared on a second British reality show titled “Ex on the Beach.” Last year Chalmers made a transition to MMA on the strength of his Muay Thai background, signing with BAMMA and notching three impressive finish wins in one year.

He submitted Greg Jenkins in his professional MMA debut in May, followed it up with a 30-second KO of Alex Thompson in September, and capped off his huge first year as a pro with a first-round TKO over Karl Donaldson last December. Chalmers will meet his most experienced opponent in Griffiths, but it remains a set-up fight for him to flash his skills as Griffiths has dropped three straight fights and four out of his past five.

Bellator 200 will be headlined by a middleweight title match between Rafael Carvalho and longtime contender Gegard Mousasi, while legend Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic will make his Bellator debut against UFC veteran Roy Nelson.

Roy Nelson isn’t too happy with fellow Bellator heavyweight fighter Matt Mitrione.

If you recall, Nelson was eliminated from the Bellator World Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament after suffering a loss. There is no love lost between these two fighters and in fact, they have some history.

Nelson lost a majority decision to Mitrione back at Bellator 194 in February, which marked a rematch between them as they fought under the UFC banner back in December of 2012 which saw Nelson win by first-round TKO.

Now, Nelson wants back in the tournament and he sees a trilogy fight with Mitrione as his opportunity. Keep in mind that Nelson’s next fight will see him take on Mirko Cro Cop at Bellator 200.

Mitrione lashed out at Nelson for using illegal tactics to keep top control in the third round in their fight at Bellator 194.

During Mitrione’s lash out, he called Nelson a “cheater,” “dirtbag” and more in the wake of the fight. Nelson fired back at Mitrione during a recent interview with MMA Junkie.

“Matt’s a guy that’s always the pot calling the kettle black,” Nelson told MMAjunkie. “I think he’s still upset because he’s cheating on his wife and stuff. That’s all I heard that whole week – was him cheating on his wife.

So I think he has a lot of guilt, and he’s got to take his rage out somewhere. But there’s no cheating on my end. I think he’s just upset because in his heart he didn’t really feel like he won. He wasn’t the best fighter that night.”

“I want Round 4, so we can go ahead and do that again,” Nelson said. “The worst-case scenario is we should’ve went to a fourth round. That was worst case scenario. (Referee) Dan (Miragliotta) was going to call the fight like three times. I got it in my head because I started having an argument with Dan about how Matt’s not moving and he couldn’t get out. He took a lot of unanswered shots.”
