Roy Nelson is the newest addition to the Bellator MMA roster.

“Big Country” is still one of the most feared knockout artists in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) today despite being 40-years-old. His record in the Octagon has been spotty as of late to say the least, but nobody knew that his loss to Alexander Volkov last April would be the last time we saw him compete under the UFC banner.

Nelson recently joined MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour to explain his decision to move to Bellator, and stated that the choice was what was best for him and his family (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“Yeah, I think it’s just one of those things — what’s best for my family, not what’s best for everybody else,” he said.

As mentioned, Nelson dropped a unanimous decision to Volkov last April where he didn’t look too great. Nelson has no excuses for the loss, however, and claims that his contract situation with the UFC did not take his focus away from fight preparation:

“No, there was a lot of stuff that happened during that fight and then fight camp and stuff, so for me it was just I wanted a fight and Volkov didn’t want to fight. It’s just kind of one of those things,” he said.

“I don’t know how it worked out at home, but in the arena there, everybody knows who actually won the fight. Because it’s a fight. If we’re going from the sport aspect it was, you know, tag. Because if I don’t mind getting hit from your punches, it’s like getting hit by you sister, so who cares.”

Another key factor as to why Nelson decided to sign on with Bellator was because of promotion president Scott Coker. Fighters ranging from Gilbert Melendez all the way to Nick Diaz have always had nothing but great things to say about working with the former Stikeforce frontman:

“The one thing about working with Scott Coker, I’ve never heard a bad thing about Scott Coker,” he said. “And that means a lot, especially in our sport.”

“It’s just one of those things,” he said. “Like, you know King Mo…to like Nick [Diaz] to Gilbert [Melendez]. Everybody that I know that’s worked with Scott never had a bad thing to say about him, and I’ve been doing this for such a long time, and I’m like, this is my chance to work with Scott, let’s do it.”

Nelson also believes his newly acquired freedom to explore sponsorship opportunities, now that he doesn’t have to deal with the Reebok fiasco going on in the UFC, is also a major plus:

“That’s the one thing I’m very excited about,” he said. “That’s definitely a plus, than being in the UFC versus being an employee and getting a ‘wear this uniform.’”

Despite some fighters claiming that sponsorships are hard to come by nowadays in the world of MMA, Nelson claims that won’t be the case for him:

“For me, yes, I don’t know about anybody else,” he said. “I think it all depends on who you are and how marketable [you are], because sponsorship is about marketability. We’ll just use UFC, if you’re on the Reebok deal and you’re making $15,000 and nobody knew who you were and you’re just like, I’ve been fighting here for the last five years, blah blah blah, and you’re making $15,000 and you’re like, ‘yes!’

“And then there were people that were names and you hit $15 grand and you’re like, um, you just took my salary away. I made more from sponsorship than I did from fighting. I did that for the longest time.”

In the end, Nelson stated that the decision to leave the UFC was due to improve the life of his family after the recent stress he has been under:

“It was more I think of just understanding what’s better for my family,” he said. “I went back and talked to my wife and then we kind of went from there and decided what we needed to do for quality of life, things that will improve our life from stress from the stuff that I’ve been through.”

Bellator MMA and Scott Coker are slowly but surely putting together a mixture of key fighters to a roster featuring fighters who have risen through the ranks in Bellator in addition to fighters who have name value built in the UFC. With that mix, Coker’s vision of what Bellator could be is becoming clear, and the future no doubt looks bright.

With Bellator needing top tier heavyweights, the promotion just made a key signing. That signing is Roy Nelson. Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting is reporting that “Big Country” has signed an exclusive, multi-fight contract with Bellator MMA. It’s expected that the promotion will officially announce the signing in the coming days.

Nelson’s (22-14) contract with the UFC expired following his latest bout, which was a unanimous decision loss to Alexander Volkov in April. Despite the fact that his promotional debut has yet to be finalized, the plan is for him to fight in the fall of this year.

Nelson made his debut with the UFC nearly a decade ago by winning the tenth season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” While under the UFC banner, he held a 9-9 record. His most notable wins in the UFC came against Stefan Struve, Mirko Cro Cop, Matt Mitrione, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Antonio Silva, and Kimbo Slice.

Nelson, who is 40 years old, had an up-and-down relationship with the UFC and Dana White. He remained a fan favorite and was always featured in big fights. While he never won the UFC heavyweight title, Bellator is need of a heavyweight champ as the title is vacant, so it’s possible that he could fight for it in the not-so-distant future.

Roy Nelson Absolutely Destroys Anderson Silva’s Title Shot Haters

Not surprisingly, there are a ton of skeptics about longtime former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva’s ultimatum that he needs an interim title fight against Yoel Romero at June 3’s UFC 212 or he’ll retire. Not surprisingly, there are a ton of skeptics about longtime former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva’s ultimatum that he needs an interim title fight against Yoel Romero at June 3’s UFC 212 or he’ll retire.

True, the legendary “Spider” may only be 1-4(1 NC) in his last six octagon bouts, but while that’s hardly the resume of a title contender, we’ve seen that pure meritocracy is rarely the way UFC title shots are handed out anyhow. The entire scenario could have been avoided altogether if A.) current champ Michael Bisping would simply fight the No. 1-ranked Romero like most fans think he should and B.) Silva’s original opponent Kelvin Gastelum hadn’t been pulled from the card for failing a USADA drug test for marijuana metabolites.

Bisping is fighting former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (or so we’ve been told) at a yet-to-be-determined date sometime later this year, a bout that “The Spider” feels is simply disrespectful to all middleweights in the stacked UFC 185-pound landscape. While there are certainly more deserving contenders on paper as Silva isn’t exactly on fire, he did get a win, albeit controversially, over Derek Brunson in his last appearance at UFC 208.

All the fans who have cried out that him earning a title shot would be a similar scenario, however, were dealt a sobering dose of facts by UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson, who pointed out a long list of UFC fighters who actually earned a title shot coming off a loss:

Ouch. Framed in that sense, Silva’s call for an interim title shot doesn’t seem all that outlandish, especially when you consider that the onetime-invincible Silva may still be the UFC’s biggest star with Conor McGregor on the sidelines trying to box Floyd Mayweather and Ronda Rousey almost assuredly retired.

And win or lose, he’s a fighting champion who actually called out  man who absolutely no one seems to want to fight right now in “The Soldier of God” just 11 months after he fought light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier on an unprecedented three days’ notice at last year’s UFC 200.

Love him or hate him, Silva is a gamer, and the UFC simply needs him during arguably the worst start to a year they’ve ever seen with both pay-per-view and TV ratings tanking in a major way under new ownership.

There’s no real reason not to make this fight, and as Nelson pointed out, a bunch of well-known UFC combatants have “earned” a title shot for much less.
