Rumor Mill: Matt Brown vs Mike Perry Is The Slobber-Knocker We All Deserve

If this is true, then color me impressed. Talk about great match making. Matt Brown and Mike Perry may be set to lock horns at UFC 207 in Las Vegas later this year. Mike Perry is still pretty fresh as a UFC prospect, but has already done enough to garner interest in his contest. He has a polarizing personality, but can back everything up with some well placed power shots. Matt Brown is an absolute beast and even though he may have lost to Jake Ellenberger in his last outing, it doesn’t change the fact that he has the mentality of a warrior. Matching these two up means guaranteed fireworks in the Octagon. So how exactly do these two match up anyways?

If this is true, then color me impressed. Talk about great match making. Matt Brown and Mike Perry may be set to lock horns at UFC 207 in Las Vegas later this year. Matt Brown is an absolute beast and even though he may have lost to Jake Ellenberger in his last outing, it doesn’t change the fact that he has the mentality of a warrior. Matching these two up means guaranteed fireworks in the Octagon. So how exactly do these two match up anyways?

Well, Matt Brown is a man who knows to fight only one way: coming forward with reckless abandon. While his style may have resembled brawling at one point in his career, at this stage it’s become more of a controlled and technical style that thrives on forward momentum and chaos. When Brown has his man hurt or cornered you can bet a ton of strikes from punches to elbows, to knees and kicks will be flying. Brown has the kind of style that overwhelms individuals and forces them into a defensive shell.

Which makes this match all the more interesting.

From what can be assessed of Mike Perry’s style, one thing is certain. He rarely takes a backwards step and carries his power into the later rounds. Just a couple of weeks ago we got to see Mike Perry demonstrate why he’s such a dangerous opponent as he took out Danny Roberts at UFC 204. What Perry lacks in head movement he makes up for in shear power and aggression. Perry believes in his chin and his power which always makes for a dangerous mix for both him and his opponents. It’s dangerous for Perry to rely on his chin not giving out in order to land his own shots. That said, it gives his opponents a certain amount of fear as he comes forward. They know he has power and if they’re unable to hurt him they can likely become gun-shy. But Matt Brown isn’t the type of man to back down.

Will this dream fight come to fruition or is it just that, a pipe dream?

Calm Down Everyone, Brock Lesnar is NOT Coming Back to the UFC

(HELL YES I’D LIKE SECONDS. Photo via Getty.)

You gotta love us MMA media types. All we need is a snippet of not news to throw our spin on and suddenly, the internet is afire with ridiculous rumors based on the smallest semblance of evidence. Take the current “reports” of a potential Brock Lesnar return to the UFC. When asked about the possibility of seeing Lesnar (who will be in attendance at UFC 168) making a triumphant octagon return at the UFC 168 scrum, here was DW’s *verbatim* response:

I honestly don’t know. Honestly. I don’t know.

That’s it. Yet what headline is dominating every MMA website out there? Oh, something along the lines of “Is Brock Lesnar returning to the UFC?”, citing the exact quote I just provided you with. Well allow me to answer the question on (apparently) everyone’s mind for you: No, dumb-dumb, Brock Lesnar is NOT coming back to the UFC. Here’s why:

Well allow me to answer the question on (apparently) everyone’s mind for you: No, dumb-dumb, Brock Lesnar is NOT coming back to the UFC. Here’s why:

While it’s a given that “honestly” is a somewhat skewed term in the mind of Dana White (often out of necessity), you’d have to be a fool to buy into these rumors. If you recall, Lesnar retired after getting beat down by Alistair Overeem at UFC 141 at the end of 2011. Why exactly? Because, as Lesnar stated, “[Overeem] was just that much better than me.” It should be noted that Overeem has not scored a UFC win since. Lesnar entered the UFC’s heavyweight division at a time when a natural light heavyweight (and current movie star) was champion, and nowadays, the skill level of the division is arguably the highest it has ever been. Which makes it all the more impressive that Cain Velasquez, the man who humiliated Lesnar in their previous title fight at UFC 121, is still dominating the division he would be attempting to reclaim.

But maybe Lesnar isn’t coming back for a title run. Maybe he just wants a one-off fight/cash grab to fill the void left behind by Georges St. Pierre. No, just no. You see, Lesnar is in this place in his career where his popularity actually serves as a detriment when compared to his skill level. He’s a high-profile fighter who can’t hang with high-level fighters. Could you honestly see the 36 year-old Lesnar standing a chance against the likes of Junior Dos Santos or Josh Barnett? And if not them, then who? Brendan Schaub? Pat Barry? His old pal Roy Nelson? Lesnar is a marquee kind of fighter based on his name alone, but there’s simply no fighter in the UFC’s heavyweight division that it would make any sense to match him up with. Unless you want to see him fight Frank Mir again, which, come on.

Further quelling these rumors is the fact that, in his post-fight speech at UFC 141, Lesnar also mentioned his continuing struggles with diverticulitis as a reason for his retirement, This is perhaps the most telling statement of them all. Simply put, there is no way in hell that Lesnar is going to risk his health again to make less money than he is currently making in the WWE.

OK, so we have an incredibly vague response from DW at a media scrum, the fact that Lesnar is not up to par with the current heavyweight division, and some diverticulitis thrown in for good measure. I’m going to go as far as to say that if Lesnar returns to the UFC, I will down a bottle of ipecac, as is tradition.

Rumor: Phil Davis to fight Lyoto Machida

Can crushing: You’re both doing it wrong.

With Jon Jones fighting Quinton Jackson at UFC 135, and the winner of that fight more than likely fighting Rashad Evans, the light-heavyweight title is not without challengers. Based on a report being passed along by MMAMania.com, the winner of Jones/Jackson vs. Evans may already have a challenger in line as well. Rumor has it that Lyoto Machida vs. Phil Davis is in the works for a future card.

As you may remember, when Phil Davis was forced to withdraw from his fight with Rashad Evans at UFC 133 due to a knee injury, Lyoto Machida was originally set to replace him. However, Machida felt he was worth that “Anderson Silva money” and declined the bout. So having the two potential Rashad Evans opponents fight each other for the right to potentially fight Rashad Evans sort of makes sense, I guess.

Excluding Rashad’s decision to stand and trade with Machida and an aging Randy Couture, is Machida capable of stopping a wrestler like Davis? For that matter, is Davis ready for a striker like Machida? According to Lyoto’s management, yes to the latter. As translated by MMAMania, “He’d be a huge opponent for Lyoto, who’s one of the biggest idols of the sport in Brazil and needs to fight again soon.”

As for the former question, Lyoto handles that one: “It’d be a clash of styles. Davis is a wrestler, who keeps a strong rhythm on all the rounds until the end. I would need to adjust some aspects in my training to fight him, but this technical change always was one of my best characteristics. I won’t have any problems.”

Famous last words, or is Lyoto’s striking going to be too much for Phil Davis? Better question, will this fight actually get made? Your call, Potato Nation.
