Scott Coker addresses a new situation involving Ryan Bader and the potential of him defending both the Bellator light heavyweight and heavyweight titles.

The last defense of the light heavyweight title under the reign of Bader came back against Linton Vassell. It saw him win the fight by strikes and that took place at the Bellator 186 event on November 3, 2017.

Bader finished Fedor Emelianenko to win the vacant Bellator heavyweight title at Bellator 214 on January 26, 2019 at The Forum in Inglewood, California on Paramount Network and DAZN.

After the event, Coker spoke about the problem that comes along with a fighter being a two-division champion. In this case, he’ll not make the call whether Bader decides to defend both. Instead, he’ll leave it up to the fighter who earned this opportunity.

“That’s going to be up to Ryan as long as we don’t have the light heavyweight (title picture) being jammed up,” Coker told MMAjunkie. “If Gegard (Mousasi) – because he told me he wants to move up and Lyoto (Machida) might want to move up at some point and fight Bader at 205.

As long as those fights aren’t right down the road for him, we’re going to give him a little bit of leeway to say, ‘Hey, if you want to defend the heavyweight, then you can do it.’ Then he’ll go back-and-forth. But I think eventually there will be a bottleneck at some point, and then we’ll all make a business decision.”

Ryan Bader says that he actually saw into the future when it comes to his latest fight inside of the Bellator cage. The Bellator light heavyweight champion made history when he took on MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko.

This fight served as the headliner of Bellator 214 on January 26, 2019, at The Forum in Inglewood, California, on Paramount Network and DAZN. In round 1, the light heavyweight champion dropped him with a left hook and Fedor was out on his feet. Bader followed up with a right hand for extra measure to win the heavyweight tournament final.

Following the fight while speaking with the media, Bader made it known that he saw this moment while preparing for the fight. Thus, when he actually pulled it off, he’s not surprised.

“You know what? I saw that moment,” Bader said at Bellator 214’s post-fight press conference (H/T to MMAFighting). “And you can ask my team, we practiced that moment a lot. I saw that punch was going to do it. You can’t see his right hand because he throws from his hip. He’s very hard to see, he throws hard. But in doing so, you leave yourself exposed. And we felt that he was going to respect my wrestling a lot, and I could put one up top. If you look through any of the footage on the Countdown shows and all of that kind of stuff, we were practicing that punch the whole time.

“Throwing a jab, getting our distance, and then fainting and throwing that left hook, and we knew he’d be there. That’s a hard punch right there. He went down, and I saw that over and over again already, so it just kinda played out how we saw it.”

Bellator MMA has their first “double-champ” as Ryan Bader needed little more than 30 seconds to knock out Fedor Emelianenko and end the Bellator World Heavyweight Grand Prix.

Bader, who already held the promotion’s light heavyweight title, did what most people expected him to do Saturday night at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. The surprising part is it only took Bader 32 seconds to knock out Emelianenko.

This is the best case scenario for the Viacom owned promotion. They to now have a certified “champ-champ” to rival the UFC.

That being said its unknown at this time if Bader will defend both titles going forward. When pressed about that very thing during his post-fight interview with John McCarthy, Bader said he would have to get with his team and see what Bellator President Scott Coker wanted to do.

Regardless Bellator MMA has their first “double champ” and his name is Ryan “Darth” Bader. Whether on not he defends both belts is another question entirely.
