On Wednesday September 4, 2013, at UFC Fight Night 28, light heavyweight contender Glover Teixeira will face a game opponent in Ryan Bader.

Since his UFC debut, Teixeira has been highly touted and a force to be reckoned with. He is on a 19-fight winning streak. Therefore, despite having barely fought any name opponents, many, including Teixeira, believe that he is more than prepared to take on the current light heavyweight phenom and champion Jon Jones.

Irrespective of the Brazilian’s astonishing win streak, Teixeira has only fought one opponent of some significance in Quinton Jackson. The Memphis native, who barely made the UFC’s top-10 list at the time, lost to Teixeira via decision in a slow, lackluster bout that was far from entertaining at UFC on Fox 6.

Since his matchup against Jackson, Teixeira has not fought one top-10 opponent. However, he is currently ranked No. 3 by the UFC and has adamantly voiced his desire to challenge the light heavyweight champion for the title. In an interview with Ariel Helwani in 2012, Teixeira stated:

Listen man, I train so hard and I have to believe in myself right? People [are] already saying I [can] challenge Jon Jones…

…Many people that fight in the UFC want to challenge the champion…

…If they put me in a fight with Jon Jones right now, I’ll get the title.

Since that interview, Teixeira has gained an incredible amount of momentum. Provided he puts on a grand performance against Bader at UFC Fight Night 28, a fight between the Brazilian and Jones may be on the horizon.

In fact, the UFC managing director of international development, Marshall Zelaznik, proclaimed as much during the UFC 163 post-fight press conference. He stated: “Dana [White] and Joe [Silva] have confirmed that with a strong victory by Glover, he probably gets the winner of the Jon Jones fight. So, Glover’s got an opportunity to go for that belt with a big win.”

On September 4, Teixeira will be facing a former NCAA Division I All-American wrestler who is coming off a respectable win over another MMA veteran in Vladimir Matyushenko. Bader is not currently ranked by the UFC, and a win over his Brazilian counterpart would be of great significance. A devastating loss on his part would more than likely push Bader farther away from the UFC’s top-10, and have Teixeira face Jones for the title.

In the end, however, Teixeira became the No. 3 ranked light heavyweight in the world by defeating no one of significance—except for an unmotivated “Rampage” Jackson, who was on his way out of the UFC at the time of their meeting.

The Brazilian’s questionable ranking, accompanied by his projected win over yet another non-ranked contender in Bader, does not legitimize a title shot and weakens the credibility of the greatest mixed martial arts organization in the world.

From their initial debut on Fox Sports 1 to UFC 164, all of it culminates this Wednesday as the Fox network hosts its second installment.

Headlining the main card in Brazil is none other than light heavyweight contenders Glover Teixeira and Ryan Bader.

Both fighters are coming off impressive first-round submission victories in which they showed their promise as future top billings.

Here’s how their matchup stacks up in the always entertaining UFC Fight Night head-to-toe breakdown.

Non-Committal Commitment of the Day: Glover Teixeira Will “Probably” Get the Winner of Jones/Gustafsson With an Impressive Win

(One of these men is on the brink of a world title shot. The other plans on penis-smacking himself in Mexico. You tell us which promotion helps build stars. Photo via Esther Lin/MMAFighting.)

Dave Chappelle once pondered what it would be like to be so famous that you could get your dick sucked and the person that sucked your dick would in turn also become famous. Someone who can probably relate to that level of power is UFC President Dana White. While he has yet to make anyone famous for giving him a hummer (besides Arianny, of course. *self five*), all White has to do is merely allude to a newsworthy piece of information and every MMA blog in the world jumps on it like it’s the word of God. I’m not the only one who sees the similarities there, right? Also, does anyone else see these fuckin’ iguanas on my coffee table?

Take this recent tidbit, for instance, which UFC executive Marshall Zelaznik dropped during the UFC 163 post-fight press conference:

Dana [White] and Joe [Silva] have confirmed, with a strong victory by Glover, then he probably gets the winner of the Jon Jones fight. Glover’s got an opportunity to go for that belt with a big win, so we’re expecting big things in Belo Horizonte.

As you would expect, MMA blogs across the board are jumping all over this statement and claiming that “a title shot is now on the line” for Glover Teixeira. Those of us who are at all familiar with Dana White, however, know that when he throws around the wordsprobably” and the phrase “with a strong victory,” he means “unless a more lucrative option becomes available.”

While Teixeira would be as good a man as any to face the Jones/Gustafsson winner, he’s also not that well known by the average MMA fan. His victory over Rampage Jackson was a good start, sure, and if he is able to put away Ryan Bader (who is quickly becoming the light heavyweight division’s go-to stepping stone) impressively in their “Fight Night 28″ headlining scrap, then he should have gathered enough momentum for a title shot. But with all the talk both surrounding and between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, you think the UFC isn’t going to jump on that opportunity should it become a realistic possibility?

This is all dependent on how Teixeira and Cormier perform against Bader and Roy Nelson, respectively. Unless you honestly think that Jones is going to lose to Gustafsson, in which case you are probably nuttier than those people who thought Chris Weidman was going to

Glover Teixeira and Ryan Bader were scheduled to meet earlier this year at UFC 160. However, Bader had to pull out with an injury and was replaced by James Te Huna.

Teixeira made quick work of Te Huna and submitted him via a guillotine in just two minutes, 38 seconds. The No. 3 light heavyweight moved his professional record to 21-2.

Bader, ranked No. 10, will get his fight against Teixeira in September. The fight has been made once again for UFC on Fox Sports 1: 3 in Brazil.

The fight is a prime chance for Bader to regain a top ranking in the division, while Teixeira will likely be named the next title challenger with a victory. There will be a lot at stake when the two top-10 light heavyweights square off in September.

This is an early head-to-toe breakdown for Teixeira vs. Bader.

On September 4, 2013, at UFC on Fox Sports 1 No. 3, light heavyweight contenders Glover Teixeira (No. 3) and Ryan Bader (No. 10) will clash in an effort to move up the divisional rankings.

For Teixeira, a win over Bader wouldn’t necessarily earn the Brazilian a title shot. However, he would be able to keep his standing as a top contender for the light heavyweight championship title.

The two combatants were scheduled to face each other in May 2013. However, citing an injury, Bader was sidelined and replaced by James Te Huna at UFC 160.

Teixeira went on to submit the New Zealander via guillotine choke in two minutes, 38 seconds in the very first round. The finish earned the Brazilian Submission of the Night honors, garnering him an extra $50,000.

In an interview with MMA Junkie, regarding Bader, Teixeira stated:

They gave me Ryan Bader for my last fight. He’s a big name, but it ended up being James Te Huna. They’re all tough guys, don’t get me wrong. The big names can make a difference for exposure, but those up-and-coming guys are tough, too. I really don’t care. I know sooner or later, I’m going to get that title.

A victory over a once highly touted and formidable Bader on September 4 would not only pad Teixeira’s resume with a name opponent and extend his 19–fight win streak, it would also build credibility for a fighter who hasn’t defeated any of the current top-10 light heavyweights in his division.

UFC light heavyweight Ryan Bader has confirmed rumors that circulated over the weekend that his next fight will be against Glover Teixeira.

Bader posted the news on his Twitter account Monday, indicating that the fight will be the main event on a September UFC Fox 1 card in Brazil.

Bader last fought in January, defeating Vladimir Matyushenko via first round submission. Once considered a rising star until he tasted defeat at the hands of current 205 pound champion Jon Jones, Bader has gone 3-2 in his last five matches and will be fighting for relevancy. However, all eyes will be on Teixeira—a man carrying a fearsome reputation since making his UFC debut in May last year.

The Brazilian has run through four opponents in the promotion, stretching his undefeated streak back to an incredible 19 fights.

His reputation has grown to eclipse almost any other in the division, and he’s already being talked of as a contender. But a fight against Bader is hardly one that will land him in Jones’ path.

Teixeira is currently No. 3 on the UFC rankings, while Bader is clinging on to the No. 10 spot. In fact, he’s only had one Top 10 fight in the UFC—against fading star Quinton Jackson earlier this year. His last fight was against the unremarkable James Te Huna; however, Teixeira doesn’t blame the UFC for “slow pacing” his career.

On the contrary, in a recent interview with MMA Junkie, the Brazilian seemed to be eager to take on Bader.

“They gave me Ryan Bader for my last fight. He’s a big name, but it ended up being James Te Huna,” said Teixeira. “They’re all tough guys, don’t get me wrong. The big names can make a difference for exposure, but those up-and-coming guys are tough, too. I really don’t care. I know sooner or later, I’m going to get that title.”

The timing of the September bout couldn’t be more perfect. Jones is also due to fight that month against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165. If Jones wins that fight, he’ll have all but cleaned out the division, leaving Teixeira the last man standing—that’s if he gets past Bader.

Bader v Teixeira is set to go down on September 4 th at the Mineirinho Arena in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
