Very few fighters have received a promotional push and the backing of the UFC like 20-year-old phenom “Super” Sage Northcutt has. After quickly compiling two straight stoppage victories in the Octagon, it appeared as if Texas native was on a fast track to stardom, although a recent loss threatened that a bit.

Jumping up in weight to take on late replacement Bryan Barberena last January, Northcutt was forced to tap to a submission, surrendering his very first loss inside of the Octagon. “Super” Sage cited a sickness for his poor performance in the aftermath of the bout, but it doesn’t appear as if his promotional backing has diminished too much.

Northcutt will next take on Enrique Marin at July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 card, likely the biggest card in promotional history, from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Putting the young up and comer on the biggest card of the year clearly shows that the UFC still sees something special in “Super” Sage.

Aside from the UFC, sports apparel giant Reebok, who serves as the official outfitter of the UFC, also sees something unique in Northcutt despite his recent setback. The 20-year-old took to his official Twitter account earlier today (June 29, 2016) to announce that he had signed a solo sponsorship deal with the company:

Despite the fact that every UFC fighter sports Reebok when he or she walks to the Octagon, only a select few have been able to ink separate sponsorship deals with the company. With this signing, Northcutt joins the likes of Conor McGregor, Ronda Rousey, Anthony Pettis, Johny Hendricks, and Joanna Jedrzeczyk among others.

Do you see Northcutt bouncing back on July 9th?

Three weeks ago, an Instagram post containing some extremely critical words about UFC lightweight Sage Northcutt surfaced from Muay Thai kickboxer Ilya Grad in which he criticized the supposed coddling of the up-and-coming MMA star.

Grad and some of his training partners were quick to note that Northcutt would need to thrown to the wolves at a real camp if he were ever to succeed at the highest levels of MMA, but Northcutt’s dad was quick to refute those notions in an interview with LowKickMMA.

Grad eventually responded to the situation to MMA Fighting’s Luke Thomas, and today (Mon., June 26, 2016) Sage himself appeared on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani to finally address the strange set of circumstances. He began by stating that Grad was not even close to the Muay Thai world champion he claimed to be, as he mainly made excuses from the start of the session:

“That was my first time training with him, and he’s supposed to be a Muay Thai world champion. I’m not sure where he got his world title from. As you could see from the fight, I actually showed up there — my jiu-jitsu coach, my grappling coach set it all up. So I was supposed to go there and spar hard, and he starts making excuses saying his neck hurts, he’s this, he’s that and he can’t spar, so we said okay.

“So I’m out there just toying around, as you could see in the video, barely touching him, just moving around, playing, pretty having fun, as you could see. And the comments he said, the things he said out there, those weren’t true. None of those were true, and you could see that from the video.”

Northcutt also fired back at Grad’s insistence that he was simply trying to help Northcutt remove himself from the protection of his father in order to become a true top professional. Northcutt – like his father before him – confirmed that this was nothing but nonsense in their opinion:

“For him to say that he was there to teach me, he wasn’t there to teach me anything. From that video, you could see that he couldn’t teach me anything. Like, he was just there to be a sparring partner.

“That was definitely not right of him to do that. I don’t know what he’s talking about. None of that, none of the facts or anything that he was trying to claim were true. So, I believe that he was just trying to get some limelight from us and get some attention and get his name out there.”

Indeed many have suggested that Grad and his gym mates were trying to score some quick and far-reaching recognition on the back of Northcutt’s burgeoning star power, even if they had to drag his name through the muck to do it.

Northcutt believes it’s something that’s an unfortunate part of his occupation, but he and the people closest to him know the facts:

“(That’s) the first time that’s happened. And like I said earlier, there’s people who are always, they’re trying to get attention. They might be saying negative stuff, but you know, I know what’s true. The people around me know what’s true.”

When one views the video of Northcutt sparring with Grad and compares them to the venom that was spewed his way, it’s not all that difficult to surmise that the whole situation got blown out of proportion to stir up a ruckus online.

The somewhat sinister mission was accomplished in that regard, but until Northcutt rebounds from his disheartening submission loss to Bryan Barberena by defeating Enrique Marin at July 9’s massive UFC 200 from Las Vegas, there may always be questions if “Super Sage” should be training full-time with a top-flight gym rather than having his father manage his career.

Thankfully, at 19 years old, he’s got quite a bit of time to figure that out. And in that time, we’re going to find out if Grad’s words – regardless of their true intentions – actually hold any weight or not.

20-year old UFC lightweight prospect Sage Northcutt entered the promotion in 2015 on the back of plenty of hype. After being featured on Dana White’s ‘Looking for a fight,’ ‘Super’ Sage debuted at UFC 192 against Francisco Trevino. His arrival in the UFC was marked with a dominant TKO of Trevino that October night in Houston, Texas and came during a time that was described by fans as ‘the cash cow hunt’ for the promotion.

Others would just call it looking for marketable talent, as is the case in all sports now days. Northcutt is young, talented, flashy and of course ripped beyond belief, so it was unlikely the promotion would be throwing him to the wolves any time soon, especially considering he’d only had six professional fights. On to UFC Fight Night 80 in December.

Northcutt faced Cody Pfister who, although more experienced as a pro, fell to the younger and much more athletic fighter by submission. UFC on FOX 18 was the next station in the whistle stop tour of Northcutt’s rise, marking the third time he’d been booked for action in just four months. He was starting to gain notoriety, not least from his fellow fighters as being somewhat of a ‘golden boy’ in the promotion. That said, he was scheduled to face undefeated (11-0) Andrew Holbrook on the January 30 card, in what would have been his biggest test to date.

As it turned out the fight which took place on the main card of the Rumble vs. Bader headlined event was indeed ‘Super’ Sage’s toughest dance, and one he’d come out of on the wrong side.

Holbrook pulled out of the lightweight contest with Northcutt and was replaced by Bryan Barberena. The fight was bumped up a weight class to welterweight and on just eight days notice Barberena temporarily halted the surge of Sage Northcutt with a slick von flue choke submission win.

Much like Ronda Rousey and (soon to be) Conor McGregor, Northcutt was subject to a wide range of criticisms, mostly in the form of memes and gifs that spread across the MMA forums.

It’s not only other UFC fighters and fans who have something to say about Northcutt though, as you’ll see on page 2…
