Santiago Ponzinibbio is finally returning to action.

The former welterweight contender hasn’t competed since a fourth-round knockout of Neil Magny back in November 2018 at UFC Buenos Aires.

A number of major bacterial infections as well as a battle with arthritis have kept the Argentine out of action for nearly two years now as his inactivity has seen his removal from the UFC rankings.

Not for long, however.

As per Milenio, Ponzinibbio is ready to return to action and has been offered a fight with Muslim Salikhov for the UFC’s upcoming January 16 event. Nothing is confirmed as of yet, however.

Before his long layoff, Ponzinibbio was a winner of seven straight fights and seemed destined for a title shot. His notable wins included the aforementioned Magny, Mike Perry and Gunnar Nelson.

Earlier in 2020, “Gente Boa” spoke of his plans to compete three times culminating in a title fight.

“I want to come back as fast as possible and fight for the belt,” Ponzinibbio said. “My idea for 2020 is to fight at least three times, including a title fight. That’s my plan for 2020, brother.”

Maybe 2021 is the year Ponzinibbio achieves his goal of becoming welterweight champion.

Salikhov, meanwhile, is on a four-fight winning streak and is coming off a split decision victory over Elizue Zaleski dos Santos in July.

Santiago Ponzinibbio: It’s ‘Good’ That Colby Covington Left American Top Team

UFC welterweight Santiago Ponzinibbio believes it’s for the best that Colby Covington departed American Top Team (ATT).

Covington made headlines earlier this year when he revealed he had departed his longtime gym in ATT. He claimed it was a decision he made along with ATT owner Dan Lambert as it came off the back of rising tensions in the gym with Covington having friction with the likes of Jorge Masvidal, Dustin Poirier and Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

And Ponzinibbio was certainly happy to see the back of Covington as he felt he was bringing bad vibes to the gym.

“He had to leave the gym for all that role he started playing and bringing in a bad vibe, so he had to leave,” Ponzinibbio said in an episode of Hablemos MMA. “I think it was a dumb attitude from his part and, yeah, better that he left because he was bringing a bad vibe to the gym. So it’s good that he left. It’s for the better.”

Ponzinibbio had trained with Covington in the past and shared coaches with him as well such as head coach Mike Brown. However, they never really had a relationship with each other.

That said, Ponzinibbio did give Covington his props as a fighter and given the current situation in the welterweight rankings, the Argentine would love to face him.

“Friendship we never had,” Ponzinibbio added. “I did train with him, but never friendship. I have nothing against him. He was never really my friend. We did share trainings a few times because we shared the same coach, Mike Brown. So we shared coach, and we would sometimes get together with Mikey and share a class, but nothing more than that.

“It was always work and professionalism and nothing more. I think he’s a great athlete. He’s a top guy in the division, and that’s a fight that would interest me. I think it’s a good matchup for me, and I think I’d knock him out and win. It’s a fight that interests me a lot.”

Ponzinibbio hasn’t competed since a fourth-round knockout of Neil Magny back in November 2018.

Santiago Ponzinibbio wants to regain all his lost momentum.

Ponzinibbio hasn’t competed since November 2018 when he knocked out Neil Magny. The victory put him on a seven-fight winning streak as it appeared he was destined to eventually get a title shot.

However, the Argentine hasn’t competed since due to a number of health issues and as a result, has been removed from the UFC rankings. But now healthy and ready to compete again, Ponzinibbio is looking for a big name.

He has been calling out Rafael dos Anjos for a while now, but there are many others who interest him as well.

“RDA I think it’s a good fight before,” Ponzinibbio told MMA Junkie. “Now he has a couple of losses, but it’s still a good name, it’s still an ex-champion. Before everything started, they told me one more fight, and you’re going to the belt. I was so excited. Right now I understand I have a couple of months off from the game. It’s not my fault.

“I’d really like to fight with a big name, maybe ex-champion. They have a lot of good names in the division: Robbie Lawler, RDA, ‘Showtime’ Pettis. Michael Chiesa coming in very well into the division; it’s a good fight. Tyron Woodley, ex-champion, always I like this fight. … Stephen Thompson is an exciting fight. A lot of good options, and hopefully they give me a good opponent for my comeback.”

Ponzinibbio Prefers Woodley

If he could choose just one, his preference would be the former champion in Woodley.

Woodley is on a two-fight losing streak and is coming off a lopsided unanimous decision defeat to current top contender Gilbert Burns. However, he still has a No. 5 rank as well as the name value to get Ponzinibbio right back into contention.

Ponzinnibio also has a date in mind.

“I like end of August or September,” Ponzinibbio said. “That’s a good time. Who? There are a lot of good names. If I need to pick and say this guy, I’d love to fight Tyron Woodley. I’ve always been asking for this fight. For different reasons they never give me, but I love this fight.

“There are a lot of good names there. I think we can do a lot of exciting fights with Robbie Lawler, a lot of good guys there. Michael Chiesa, he came in very well, three victories in the division, the last fight was a co-main event. We can do an exciting main event with Michael Chiesa, a good fight, too.”

Dos Anjos

Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos has three names in mind for what could be his final fight for the promotion.

Dos Anjos is currently on a two-fight losing streak following unanimous decision defeats to Leon Edwards and Michael Chiesa. And with just one fight remaining on his current contract, “RDA” is looking to compete in June or July next.

That said, he also hopes to sign a new deal with the UFC, having fought for the promotion since 2008.

“I want to fight. I fought in January, so June or July would be good dates,” he told MMA Fighting. “I’m going for the last fight in my contract with the UFC, so we have to see if the UFC wants to re-sign me. It’s a bunch of things.

“… I’m in the UFC for many years, since 2008, and the UFC is a very solid company. I have a great relationship with Dana White, I have almost 30 fights in the organization, and I would like to re-sign with the UFC. That’s what I want, but it’s not only up to me, it’s up to them as well, if they want to re-sign me.”

Dos Anjos Has Three Names In Mind

As for who the Brazilian wants to fight next, there are three names he is targeting; Anthony Pettis, Stephen Thompson or Santiago Ponzinibbio. And given his current position, he feels those are fights that make sense.

“I thought about Pettis because he once said, after a victory, that he was interested in fighting me at 170,” Dos Anjos said. “Since he fought (Donald) Cerrone at welterweight, I think this could be the fight.

“… Man, Ponzinibbio is crazy. (The UFC) hasn’t said anything. This guy hasn’t fought in a year and a half. F*ck, I fought (four) times since his last fight. I have no problem fighting him, but, brother, no one told me anything. He throws some crazy stuff online, it’s hard to understand. But I have no problem fighting Ponzinibbio.

“I’m in a situation that I can’t call anyone out. I’m coming off a loss and I know that’s in the past and I will bounce back, but what the UFC offers me, something that makes sense… I think Pettis would make sense for the history. The market is starting to move now. Stephen Thompson and I, there was some talk in the past, so I think that could be the fight. The division is very jammed, let’s see how it plays out.”

UFC welterweight contender Santiago Ponzinibbio has called for a short-notice fight with Rafael dos Anjos.

Following Anthony Pettis’ win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 249 this past weekend, Dos Anjos — currently on a two-fight losing streak — suggested a rematch with the former lightweight champion.

“How about RDA vs Pettis II?”

That led to a response from Ponzinibbio.

“I am here @RdosAnjosMMA next weekend or when you’re ready @danawhite

Dos Anjos didn’t seem to take the challenge too seriously as he called the Argentinian a comedian in response.

Ponzinibbio, RDA Beef Goes Back

Dos Anjos and Ponzinibbio have been going back-and-forth for a while now with both fighters notably accusing the other of running away from fights last year. Now would certainly be as good a time as any to settle any beef the pair have.

Dos Anjos is coming off a unanimous decision defeat to Michael Chiesa which was preceded by him getting outpointed by Leon Edwards last year.

Ponzinibbio, on the other hand, is on a seven-fight winning streak. However, “Gente Boa” hasn’t competed since his knockout win over Neil Magny in November 2018.
