If you think UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is the best in the world, then you are wrong, according to Bellator MMA President Scott Coker, who believes that the 170-pound division has another undisputed king across the board.

Coker is talking about current Bellator welterweight champion Douglas Lima. Well, Coker is putting Lima in a tough spot this weekend at Bellator NYC as he is set to defend his title against former UFC prospect Lorenz Larkin on the main card of the pay-per-view event. This will not be an easy task for Lima.

Lima is not someone to doubt as he has only lost twice under the Bellator banner since making his debut in 2011. His most recent loss was a title-costing one to Andrey Koreshkov. Lima has racked up 28 career wins.

What is impressive by that number is that 24 of those wins came by either KO or submission. On the flip side, Larkin is coming off wins over contenders Neil Magny and Jorge Masvidal.

“Douglas Lima is a killer,” Coker said in a promotional video leading up to Saturday’s Bellator NYC. “I’ll say here, he is the best welterweight in the world right now.”

Obviously, you can make the case that Coker is a little biased, but by looking at Lima’s record, the claims are not completely without merit.

Bellator NYC: Sonnen vs. Silva is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The promotion has decided to call the PPV portion of the event Bellator NYC while the preliminary portion of the event will be titled Bellator 180.

The prelims will air on Bellator.com at 6 p.m. ET while the Bellator 180 main card will air on Spike at 8 p.m. ET with four bouts. The Bellator NYC card will air on PPV at 10 p.m. ET with five bouts.

The combat sports world is in for quite a treat later this year (Sat. August 26, 2017) when UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor steps into the boxing ring against one of the greatest of all time – Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Bellator MMA President Scott Coker recently spoke on the bout’s announcement and gave his thoughts on the crossings of the MMA and boxing worlds, as he stated that the UFC is putting McGregor ‘in harm’s way’ by allowing him to fight Mayweather (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“Obviously, it’s gonna be a big money maker for everybody and that’s why they’re doing it,” Coker said. “But you’re putting your fighter in harm’s way, so what’s the long term impact on that? I’m not sure. But I’ll tell you this: It’ll be a lot of fun to watch.”

At the end of the day, Coker is still a fight fan and knows that fans are going to be tuning in for the unorthodox match-up, but admits that he believes McGregor has his hands full against “Money”:

“How could it be?” Coker said. “I think the people that are gonna watch it, the people that are gonna buy it, they know what it is. It’s gonna be a great spectacle and a lot of great promotion going back and forth. I think Mayweather is a fighter that even Canelo couldn’t even hit or event Pacquiao couldn’t even hit. So, I think Conor has his hands full. But you never know in a fight, right? Who knows? Sometimes someone can get lucky.”

After the announcement of McGregor vs. Mayweather was made many fellow mixed martial artists began throwing their name in the hat for a potential switch over to the boxing world, in hopes of landing a spot on the same card as the Irishman. Coker doesn’t believe any other fighters have the draw power to pull of a crossover to boxing the way “The Notorious One” does:

“This fight is happening because everybody on the business side knows that it makes sense,” said Coker. “There are other fighters in MMA that feel like they might have that kind of drawing power, but maybe they really don’t. I think it’ll be quickly unmasked. Either people care or they don’t and that’s what it really comes down to for me when it comes to fights.”

Despite being on the outside looking in of this deal, Coker is excited for the event and stated that he will be attempting to go to Las Vegas to watch the fight live and in person:

“Any time Mayweather fights, the circus is in town, man,” Coker said. “It’s gonna be a big, big promotion. And Conor he can carry his own on the mic. The whole campaign leading up to the event is gonna be more entertaining than the fight.”

“I can’t wait to see it,” Coker said. “I want to see it. I’m gonna fly there and watch it live.”

Wanderlei Silva Explains Why He Missed Bellator: NYC Press Conference

On June 24, 2017, Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva are finally scheduled to clash in the main event of Bellator: NYC live on pay-per-view (PPV) from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Silva, however, has missed two pre-fight press conferences, leading some to wonder if he’ll actually show up on fight night.

Originally, Bellator executives said that Silva had missed the most recent press conference because he was ill, but “The Axe Murderer” recently gave his own explanation:

“The truth is, I didn’t go to the press conference because I didn’t want to do what (Cristiane) ‘Cyborg’ (Justino) did with that girl that talked (expletive) to her,” Silva told MMAjunkie.

The situation Silva is referring to occurred at the UFC’s recent Athlete Retreat in Las Vegas, where Cyborg essentially punched Magana in the face after claiming that Magana had been bashing her over social media.

Sonnen is without question Silva’s most bitter rival, as their feud dates back years, and it appears as if “The Axe Murderer” wasn’t convinced that he’d be able to control himself around the outspoken “American Gangster”:

“When I see Chael, I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Silva said. “I’m professional, but the guy has crossed the line with me and played with the wrong guy.”

Silva and Sonnen have been booked to face each other before, but the bout has never come to fruition. If all goes to plan, however, the two will finally meet and headline what is undoubtedly set to be the biggest card in Bellator history.

Aside from the main event, Scott Coker and Co. have stacked the deck for Bellator: NYC, as the co-main event will feature a bout between Fedor Emelianenko, a man many consider to be the very best heavyweight of all-time, and Matt Mitrione, a former UFC contender.

Welterweight champion Douglas Lima will welcome Lorenz Larkin to Bellator in a 170-pound title fight as well, while lightweight titleholder Michael Chandler will take on Brent Primus. In addition, highly touted prospect Aaron Pico will make his professional debut against Zach Freeman.

Bellator MMA has come a long way within two years since Scott Coker ascended to the top spot of the second-largest MMA promotion. According to the Bellator President, the product of the promotion is only going to move up. Bellator, which is owned by Viacom, is largely a promotion that focuses on events that air on television rather than pay-per-view events, which is the opposite of the UFC, who has the PPV market in a choke hold regarding MMA. Later this month, Bellator will hold their second PPV event, Bellator NYC, which will be headlined by Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva. The card is so big that Coker believes it’s the best PPV that’s been offered to MMA fans this year.

“This is not something we’re going to go in and out of,” Coker told ESPN recently. “This is something we’re committed to. The company is committed to doing PPV fights. The PPV business is tough, and there’s a lot of competition in the marketplace. There’s boxing fights around us, wrestling events, other MMA shows. But honestly, I think this is the best MMA PPV that’s been offered in 2017. I’m a fight fan and always buy the big fights; I haven’t bought one of them this year. But this PPV, the way we’ve stacked it from top to bottom, is the best offering this year.”

Not only does Bellator NYC feature a good main event, but they have also stacked the main card. In the co-main event, MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko takes on former UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione. Rounding out the main card is Michael Chandler defending his lightweight title as well as Douglas Lima defending his welterweight title against new free-agent acquisition Lorenz Larkin. Then we go to the undercard, which will air on Spike TV and feature a light heavyweight title fight between Phil Davis and Ryan Bader.

“When you say expectations, it’s something I think we’re going to feel. To me, any [buy rate] in the mid-200,000’s would be respectable. And anything in the 300,000’s would be considered a big hit.”

Bellator’s only other PPV offering, before Coker joined the company, drew 100,000 buys. That event was headlined by a lightweight bout Quinton Jackson and Mo Lawal with supporting fights including an interim lightweight title fight between Chandler and Will Brooks as well as Tito Ortiz making his promotional debut. Coker believes that this event will do better than the first PPV due to the rivalry between Sonnen and Silva still being a fight that the fans want to see.

“We’ve been waiting in the wings for Wanderlei. Had he been available to fight in January, Chael would have fought him instead of Tito Ortiz, and that’s because that’s the fight that’s been built up for the last four years. That fight was supposed to happen three years ago, and it never did. I feel people are still interested in this and that’s what it comes down to the matchup.”

Bellator NYC takes place on June 24th at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
