Gilbert Burns recently shared his thoughts on whether Sean Brady poses a legitimate threat on the ground, given his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Burns is gearing up to face Brady in a crucial welterweight showdown, set to headline this weekend’s Fight Night event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Durinho” has been absent from the Octagon since suffering a third-round knockout at the hands of Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 299 this past March. That setback came just two months after another tough loss, when the 38-year-old Brazilian veteran was defeated by newly crowned welterweight champion Belal Muhammad at UFC 288 in May 2023.

Meanwhile, Brady is stepping into uncharted territory with his first-ever five-round bout under the UFC banner. The 31-year-old American has only gone past the third round once in his career. In his last appearance, he secured an impressive submission victory over seasoned veteran Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Fight Night Austin last December, bouncing back from the first setback of his career against Muhammad at UFC 280 in October 2022.

Burns is a formidable force on the mat, a dangerous grappler who has dominated since his return to the welterweight division in 2019, racking up the second-highest number of takedowns in the division. On the other hand, Brady is no slouch on the ground either, bringing his own savage submission game to the table, potentially making their matchup a fascinating chess contest of technical prowess and ground control…

Burns Holds Brady’s Grappling Skills In High Regard

During a recent interview with MMA journalist Kevin Iole, Burns was asked to weigh in on just how dangerous he believes Brady’s grappling game truly is. As a decorated BJJ black belt world champion himself, ‘Durinho’ acknowledged that his opponent is far from an ordinary grappler, noting that Brady trains under the tutelage of BJJ legend Daniel Gracie.

“He’s legit. His coach is Daniel Gracie, you know. Daniel Gracie grew up with Renzo [Gracie], so he’s very, very good,” Burns said. “Daniel Gracie saw Brady since he was a kid, so he’s a legit black belt.”

Burns went on to highlight Brady’s impressive grappling credentials, pointing out that Brady managed to defeat ADCC submission champion Craig Jones—an accomplishment that Burns himself couldn’t achieve.

“He beat Craig Jones even when [the bout] was set with no leg locks. When I lost to Craig Jones, it was with leg locks—he went quick on my leg. So, Sean Brady beat him under no leg lock rules. Yeah, he’s a great fighter.”

“Durinho” is currently navigating the first back-to-back losses of his career, and he’s well aware that the outcome on Saturday night carries critical weight if he hopes to climb back into title contention.

UFC welterweight Michel Pereira details sparring reigning heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou.

Michel Pereira is scheduled to face fellow top 15 170lber’, Sean Brady, in March of next year. For his upcoming training camp, the Brazilian will be training at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. Many notable names either train at Xtreme Couture, such as Sean Strickland and Chris Curtis, but the gym is also home to the world’s baddest man, Francis Ngannou.

As part of training, Pereira revealed to Sherdog.com that he shared sparring rounds with ‘The Predator’, comparing Ngannou’s size to that of a fridge.

In one of the first sparrings I did there, the coach told everybody to pair up. Since I was just arriving and didn’t know anybody, everybody was already paired up,” Pereira said. “I looked on both sides and there was only one partner left: Francis Ngannou. Oh my God. It looked like I was grappling with a refrigerator. The guy threw me to one side and another like I was a toy. I got a stiff neck for one week.”

Michel Pereira vs. Sean Brady

Michel Pereira has the opportunity to break into the UFC’s top 15 should he get passed the grappling-heavy approach of Brady. ‘Demolidor’ would reveal that he desperately tried to get onto the upcoming UFC Rio card, but instead would settle for the No.11 ranked Brady, whom he admits he knows little about.

I thought that my hard time finding opponents was due to the fact that I was out of the rankings, but that was a huge mistake“, Pereira said. “[UFC matchmaker Sean] Shelby did everything he could to find me someone to face at UFC Rio, but nobody wanted to fight me. I was really mad until the UFC came with the name of Sean Brady, and it looks like we will fight on March 25.

“All I know is that he is a wrestler. I saw his fight with Belal [Muhammad], but I don’t know much about him,” (H/T Sherdog.com)

Pereria is currently riding a five-fight win streak, holding wins over names such as Khaos Williams, Andre Fialho and Santiago Ponzinibbio.

UFC welterweights Sean Brady and Michel Pereira are set to face off on March 25th.

It has been announced that Brady and Pereira will join the likes of Holly Holm, Chidi Njokauni, and Maycee Barber on the UFC’s San Antonio, Texas card.

Pereira now has the opportunity to break into the UFC’s official top 15, having compiled an impressive five-fight win streak over the likes of Khaos Williams, Andre Fialho, and Niko Price. Pereira’s most recent victory came over the dangerous Santiago Ponzinibbio back in May, and appears to have found his footing in the promotion after a rough start to his UFC career.

As for Sean Brady, the 30-year-old will look to bounce back after his first career loss at the hands of Belal Muhammad at UFC 280. This fight came after 11 months his last and the jump up in class proved too much for the highly touted Brady who would be TKO’d in the second round.

Before the loss, Brady had compiled an impressive run, holding wins over Michael Chiesa and Jake Matthews. The Philadelphia native poses high-level grappling skills and even holds a win over jiu-jitsu legend, Craig Jones, in submission grappling.

The bout is set to be a real clash of styles with Pereira presenting an unorthodox striking style while Brady will likely rely heavily on his grappling skills.

Who do you think will win, Sean Brady or Michel Pereira?
