[UPDATE]

According to Brian Kelleher, he and “Sugar” Sean O’Malley have an upcoming engagement.

Last month, Kelleher shot his shot when calling out O’Malley for a fight. Kelleher felt that the fact that he was unranked put him at an advantage to get accepted by O’Malley. This is because O’Malley has recently stated that he prefers fighting unranked opponents if he is getting paid the same. And though Kelleher has been ranked in the past, he does not currently have a number next to his name.

O’Malley recently turned down a fight against Frankie Edgar pitched for November’s UFC 268 and has stated that he prefers to fight in December instead. If Kelleher’s tweet is to be believed after being read between its few lines, then it seems as though Kelleher’s callout has paid off.

“She said yes @SugaSean,” the tweet reads with an engagement ring emoji.

Following this tweet, MMA reporter Mike Heck provided the update that no fight has been officially offered as of yet, but there is some interest from both teams in putting the fight together for UFC 269 in December. Perhaps Kelleher is privy to direct knowledge of just how deep that interest runs from O’Malley himself.

As always, MMA News will keep you posted on this developing story and deliver any updates regarding any formal fight agreement between these two bantamweights.

[ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED AUGUST 23, 2021, 12:00 PM]

UFC bantamweight Brian Kelleher called out Sean O’Malley following his dominant victory over Domingo Pilarte at UFC Vegas 34, offering to give “Sugar” the unranked opponent he’s after.

Kelleher, who has fought twelve times since making his promotional debut in 2017, made his second appearance of this year during this past weekend’s prelims. Pilarte, meanwhile, entered the cage for the first time since last February.

After defeats to Cody Stamann and Ricky Simón interrupted solid victories over Hunter Azure and Ray Rodriguez, “Boom” was looking to rebound in style and begin a more consistent run of wins. After three rounds of comfortable control, the 35-year-old had done exactly that.

Looking to continue his trend of remaining as active as possible, Kelleher wasted no time in calling out a big name for his next fight. During his post-fight interview inside the Octagon, the New York native set his sights on Sean O’Malley.

After taking shots at “Sugar” for hanging out with rapper 6ix9ine, and for getting a tattoo dedicated to the controversial figure, Kelleher staked his claim to be the unranked opponent O’Malley wants to face.

“O’Malley, stop it with the 6ix9ine tattoos. What kind of guys you hangin’ out with? You should have got a tattoo of a vagina. You know you don’t want to fight any ranked guys, so here I am. Business is booming.” (h/t Sportskeeda)

Kelleher’s comments come after O’Malley revealed his desire to continue fighting unranked opponents in the UFC despite his rising stardom. The 26-year-old explained that he’d get paid the same to face someone outside of the top 15 as he would to face a top five name.

O’Malley was last in action at UFC 264 last month. After the withdrawal of Louis Smolka, “Sugar” faced promotional newcomer Kris Moutinho. Despite an incredible display of toughness from the debutant, he was finally stopped with less than 30 seconds of the main card opener remaining.

Despite perhaps not finding the highlight reel finish he’d been after, O’Malley put in an impressive performance on the feet that saw him break the record for the most significant strikes landed in a UFC bantamweight fight. He’ll be looking to continue his rise to the top when he makes his next walk to the Octagon.

Chael Sonnen doesn’t see any holes in Sean O’Malley’s game.

O’Malley is one of the most popular and exciting fighters in the UFC, let alone the bantamweight division. However, many don’t believe he has what it to takes to reach the top of the mountain.

Some believe he’s a hype train backed by the UFC while others like former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw believe O’Malley has holes in his game and isn’t championship material.

Sonnen, however, disagrees as he recently came to the defense of O’Malley.

“I don’t know what hole Sean (O’Malley) has in his game,” Sonnen said in a recent video (via Sportskeeda). “T.J. (Dillashaw) sees some holes (in O’Malley’s game), T.J. is the former world champion, he has got the right to his opinion. Cody Stamann comes out and says that Sean is an overhyped clown. I believe Sean is 15-1. I believe that’s his record. I know I’m damn close. And I also know that one (loss) came when he had the same leg injury that Conor (McGregor) had or (Michael) Chandler suffered or many other fighters, but those fighters stopped the contest and Sean continued on with it.

“In all fairness, if the guy sucks, how come no one can beat him?”

While Sonnen has a fair point there, the counter argument is that O’Malley is yet to face the real killers in the 135-pound division.

And going by his recent comments of preferring to face unranked opponents, it looks like it’ll be some time before we see that happen.

That said, he is still only 26 and has plenty of time to grow in the sport.

Do you agree with Sonnen?

UFC bantamweight prospect, Jack Shore believes his divisional rival, Sean O’Malley, “definitely” wants to fight the best opponents despite the fact ‘Suga’ says otherwise.

O’Malley caused a stir recently when he admitted he is actively avoiding tough fights at this stage of his career. The 26-year-old explained that his stance was mainly due to his current contract with the UFC which does not reward him for accepting fights against ranked opponents.

During an interview with LowKickMMA, Shore claimed to understand where O’Malley is coming from.

“I get what he’s saying, to an extent,” Shore said. “Obviously, he’s going to get paid the same whether it’s the best in the world or someone unranked.

Ultimately though, Shore says ‘Suga’, like everybody else in the UFC, wants to be the best, and to do that you’ve got to beat the best.

“If they offered a guy who’s ranked 25th or they offer him a guy who’s ranked five – who do you think he’s gonna take? As much as we do what we do to provide for the family and make our money at the same time, of course, he wants to be the best in the world,” Shore said.

“After his last fight, I think he called out Dominick Cruz, Cody Garbrandt, and someone else. So, obviously, he wants to fight those top guys. But, at the same time, he’s a very big draw. So perhaps he’s holding out to get that paycheque that he thinks he’s worth,” Shored added. “I don’t think personally that he doesn’t have desire to fight those top guys. He knows ultimately that’s where he wants to be and that’s the guys he wants to fight. I think he’s just very good at marketing himself.

“You know, the guy he fought last time. If he can make the same money fighting him (Kris Moutinho) or fighting someone like Jose Aldo, I suppose what he’s saying makes a little bit of sense – but at the same time we all want to be the best in the world and we wouldn’t be in the UFC if we didn’t,” Shore concluded. “So, make no mistake, I know he’s good at saying these things but he definitely wants to be fighting those top dogs – that’s a fact!

Do you agree with Jack Shore? Does Sean O’Malley want to fight the best?
