Hot off the heels of a clinic of a victory over Thomas Almeida at UFC 260, Sean O’Malley already has his sights set on a new matchup.

Even as the dust was settling following the third round TKO, former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz was already texting Chael Sonnen about how he’d like to face ‘Suga’ Sean next. Cruz is coming off a decision win over another rising prospect in Casey Kenny.

On the Pat McAfee Show, O’Malley was asked who he’d be interested in fighting next. The ever vocal American stated the following:

“The second after you fight the question is, who’s next? I heard Dominick Cruz texted Chael Sonnen saying he wanted that fight. So, I don’t know if Chael got a prank text for a fake Dom or if that’s real. That’s a potential matchup.

“I know Dustin Poirier tweeted the other day, July 10, so I think I’m a pretty good co-main event type dude,” O’Malley continued. “Dustin vs. Conor, Suga vs. Dominick, I don’t know, that makes sense, that might be it. July, we’ll see. I definitely want to get in there a couple more times this year” (Transcribed via BJPenn.com).

The fight would seem to be mutually beneficial for both fighters. O’Malley would get the opportunity to test himself against a true veteran of the 135lb division. Whilst Cruz would be able to catapult himself back into the limelight with a win against such an exciting prospect.

The placement of the fight would also seem to make perfect sense. McGregor PPV cards do not typically feature co-main title fights, so Conor does not have to split the PPV buys. However, a fight like O’Malley vs Cruz would no doubt only serve to bolster the hype of the card, without impacting McGregor’s payout.

Sean O’Malley says he was not trying to get a walk off knockout at UFC 260.

O’Malley competed for the first time since he lost his undefeated record to Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera in August 2020.

‘Suga’ looked sensational on route to a third-round knockout victory over Thomas Almedia on the pay-per-view card. However, it seemed like he could’ve closed the show much earlier had he wanted to.

O’Malley heavily dropped his Brazilian opponent in round one, only to walk away, rather than follow up with ground strikes.

The UFC 260 commentators believed he was trying to get a Mark Hunt style walk-off KO.

During a recent interview with Pat McAfee, O’Malley explained that was not the case and it was actually all part of an elaborate plan to sell T-Shirts.

“The real reason as to what happened, before the fight, I had undefeated shirts made up that said another right hand from Suga lands,” O’Malley said. “I drop him in the first round but I dropped him with a left hand, I wasn’t walking away because I thought I got a walkoff knockout, I was walking away to let him back up so I could knock him out with the right hand and sell my shirts. Which are doing absolutely incredible right now.”

O’Malley was happy to drag out the fight as he didn’t feel in any danger.

“I went and rewatched the fight and the commentators were saying it was the biggest mistake of my life and I’m just this young kid and I need to mature, I’m not smart enough in there,” O’Malley said. “I’m thinking, I’ve been doing this for 10 years, I’m pretty mature as far as a professional fighter. I’ve been striking for a long time and I didn’t feel in any danger in there.

“If I wanted to get on him and get a TKO finish, I could’ve jumped on him and did that in the first round. That’s not what I’m in there for, I’m in there to put people’s lights out and I want to go viral,” Sean O’Malley added. “Like I said, I have 15 minutes in there, why end it in three minutes in the first round when I am still having fun in there, I just broke a sweat… I need to get in there and have some fun, you only get to fight a couple of times of a year.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Dominick Cruz has never been shy about telling the world his opinions. The Bantamweight legend has earned a reputation for calling out fighters, referees and sponsors alike. UFC 260 would be no different, as Cruz had an immediate call out after the fights. During the ESPN post show, Chael Sonnen shared that he’d received a text, while on air, from Cruz stating that he believes he should fight Sean O’Malley next.

It comes as no surprise that O’Malley would garner the attention from a fighter of Cruz’s caliber. The legend has consistently challenged himself and is not one to shy away from the tough fights. Over the span of his sixteen year career, Cruz has taken on all challengers and has never lost a professional, non-title fight. Following up his split-decision win over Contender Series alum and O’Malley teammate, Casey Kenney, Cruz seems to be back in the business of trying to run through opposing gyms. He’s also hungry to prove that he deserves another run at the title.

For his part, O’Malley scored a decisive victory over Thomas Almeida at UFC 260, silencing the critics after his lost against Marlon Vera. The seven-month layoff had no impact on his performance and he looked as dominant as he had during his undefeated run. Sonnen believes that this match up is the right move for both fighters. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“What’s up Dominick? Hope you’re well, buddy. But get onto the UFC. Speak to Mick Maynard and Sean Shelby because we don’t know if Sean O’Malley wants that fight. That is a fight that needs to happen. That’s a tremendous match up for Sean O’Malley because it would raise his profile. And for Dominick Cruz, that’s beating a contender, that gets him back to a title shot.”

Dana White

UFC president Dana White was seriously impressed with bantamweight contender, Sean O’Malley, who bounced back from his first career loss in fantastic fashion this past weekend.

‘Suga’ faced off against Thomas Almeida over three rounds on the UFC 260 main card.

It was O’Malley’s first fight since he lost to Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera at UFC 252 in August last year.

The 26-year-old looked fantastic early and seemed to have closed the show in round one when he heavily dropped his opponent. O’Malley began to walk off, but the referee didn’t step in and the Brazilian quickly popped back to his feet.

O’Malley continued to pick apart his Almeida throughout the following two rounds and seemed to be coasting to a decision win.

‘Suga’ took the fight out of the judges’ hands when he dropped Almeida again in the third round and followed up with a nasty ground strike that put Almeida out cold.

“He did it twice tonight,” White told reporters at the UFC 260 post-fight press conference. “He looked good coming back in off of the ‘Chito’ Vera fight, he came in tonight against a real tough kid, durable, with serious punching power and he put on a masterpiece tonight.

“He picked him apart, stayed on the outside and did whatever he wanted to do,” White added. “He hurt him [in the first round], thought he finished him and then finished him again in the third round. You really couldn’t have put on a better performance than he did tonight.”

White remained coy on what could be next for O’Malley but refused to rule out the possibility that he could rematch Vera down the line.

“You can make that fight anytime,” White stated. “That one’s always there, but I don’t know what’s next for either one of those guys.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)
