Glory Tourney Postponed Until December; First Round to Include Schilt, Kharitonov, Bahadurzada and Zimmerman

United Glory announced today that it will be postponing its planned October “World Series” event until December and that the first show of the 2011-2012 kickboxing and MMA tournament, which will happen in Moscow, will feature Golden Glory standouts Semmy Schilt, Sergei Kharitonov, Siyar Bahadurzada and Errol Zimmerman.

Originally, United Glory had planned to have Alistair Overeem headline the event, but the former Strikeforce heavyweight champ recently signed an exclusive contract with the UFC and split with Golden Glory’s management team, leaving them scrambling to find a suitable replacement for “The Demolition Man,” which they did with Schilt. A multi-time K-1 champion, “Hightower” is a huge draw in Europe, regardless of who he fights. Hopefully, they’ll bring in a suitable opponent to face him.

We’ll have more on the match-ups for the event as they’re announced.

Alistair Overeem wins K-1 World Grand Prix final.Alistair Overeem already owns the Strikeforce MMA heavyweight title. Now, he owns the most prestigious championship in heavyweight kickboxing.

Overeem won the K-1 World Grand Prix Final 2010 with a brutal display of striking Saturday in Japan, using a vicious body shot to stop Peter Aerts in the final of his three fights in the eight-man, one-night tournament.

Aerts got to the final with a shocking majority decision upset over defending champion Semmy Schilt, and if the 40-year-old Aerts had won the whole tournament it would have been a great moment for longtime K-1 fans, who have long loved Aerts’ fighting style in the ring and gentlemanly ways out of the ring.

Heads up for those of you who forget such things: K-1’s World Grand Prix Finals are going down tonight/tomorrow/whatever in Japan, and will air live on HDNet Fights at 2am EST.  Eight heavyweights from six countries (including at least one guy you should damn well be familiar with) will meet to do bodily harm to one another in the name of entertainment, and to determine whom you would least like to meet in a bar while hitting on his girlfriend.

A rundown of the brackets and the rest of the card are after the jump….

(They may be in for a shock to learn that horse meat isn’t available in Cali.)

CagePotato.com was informed last night by the head of Team Golden Glory, Bas Boon, that the revered Dutch fight camp will be opening up a satellite location in Huntington Beach,  California, likely by the end of the year.

According to Boon, the gym will be run by Carlo Dekkers, the brother of retired Golden Glory champion kickboxer and current trainer, Ramon Dekkers and it will act as the base for training camps of team members who will be fighting in North America similar to the one they set up in Pattaya, Thailand for fighters readying to compete in Asia.

Boon says that several of Golden Glory’s revered trainers like Cor Hemmers and himself and star fighters such as Alistair Overeem, Semmy Schilt, Sergei Kharitonov, Siyar Bahadurzada and Marloes Coenen will make the California facility a regular destination, adding that the team will also be recruiting American fighters through the gym.

A date for the gym’s opening has not been set, but Boon said it will likely be announced soon when the logistics are finalized.

Winning three heavyweight kickboxing bouts in one night to claim the K-1 World Grand Prix Final title may be the most physically demanding endeavor in combat sports. As a four-time World Grand Prix champion, Semmy Schilt knows that well.

The physical demands of the K-1 World Grand Prix are the reason that the 36-year-old Schilt is making a point of preserving himself this year. Schilt has stepped into the ring just once since winning the 2009 title on December 5, and he says he doesn’t expect to fight again until it’s time to begin the path toward defending his title in a Final 16 bout in September.

“The last time I fought was on the fourth of April, and now I am waiting on my next fight, in the Final 16 this year,” Schilt told MMAFighting.com. “I don’t have many injuries so its not necessary to preserve myself, but now I am training without pressure, and that feels good.”
