UFC heavyweights Frank Mir and Roy Nelson have both seen plenty of success in their respective careers and whoever emerges from their UFC 130 matchup will move either one step closer to a heavyweight title shot.

While Nelson has faced his fair share of quality competition throughout his career, Mir believes the rotund heavyweight would have a better chance at 205 pounds.

“You know, I’ve always felt that Roy probably could be very effective at (light heavyweight),” Mir recently told MMADigest, courtesy of MMAUniverse.com.

Since trimming down and adding muscle to his frame, Mir considered the idea of moving down to the light heavyweight division prior to his bout against Cheick Kongo at UFC 107.

While he admires the success Nelson has achieved competing in the heavyweight division, Mir is skeptical of “Big Country” and his chances of competing against the upper echelon of the division.

“The whole big belly thing is cool, but I think he will struggle with some of the better heavyweights in the UFC,” Mir said.

Nelson’s most recent loss came at the hands of heavyweight standout Junior Dos Santos at UFC 117, while Mir’s recent losses came up against some of the bigger, stronger guys such as Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin.

It’s those two losses that has Mir believing Nelson’s time will be limited in the heavyweight division.

“He could still beat guys at heavyweight, but will he be an unstoppable force? Nah, he is giving up a lot of height. I can speak from experience, quality size matters.”

If UFC president Dana White has said it once, he’s said it a thousand times: MMA is not a team sport.

It’s a sport that’s all about individual success and failure. It’s about two men locked in a violent struggle for money and status, and there’s not enough of either to go around.

This, of course, is the inexorable logic of the fight promoter, who stands to profit handsomely if he can convince friends, teammates, and training partners to forego all other loyalties and duke it out in the cage. But then, the promoter doesn’t have to actually get in there and knock his best friend unconscious.

As UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub put it, “This isn’t basketball. It’s not like Magic [Johnson] and [Larry] Bird playing each other and being all buddy-buddy. Somebody’s getting fu**ed up.”

The waiting game is over for Shane Carwin. The onetime UFC interim champion finally has an opponent, as UFC president Dana White revealed during a Seattle Times live chat that Carwin would face octagon newcomer Jon Olav Einemo.

MMA Fighting first reported Einemo’s signing
earlier this month.

The 35-year-old is a member of Team Golden Glory and has a 6-1 record in MMA, though he has not fought over four years.

UFC Newcomer Jon Olav Einemo Fighting Shane Carwin

Jon Olav Einemo certainly won’t be accused of having a tomato can tossed his way in his UFC debut, as boss man Dana White has confirmed in a Seattle Times live chat that the heavyweight will face none other than former contender Shane Carwin first. Jon-Olav-Einemo

Jon Olav Einemo certainly won’t be accused of having a tomato can tossed his way in his UFC debut, as boss man Dana White has confirmed in a Seattle Times live chat that the heavyweight will face none other than former contender Shane Carwin first. (Thanks to MMA Junkie for the heads up). Of course, Einemo isn’t exactly a shrinking violet that just started doing this ‘UFC stuff’; the Norwegian heavyweight is 6’6, a former ADCC Submission Wrestling World Champ, whose only MMA loss came against Fabricio Werdum.

Clearly someone at the UFC thinks this guy might know a thing or two about fighting. The bout is expected to take place at UFC 131.

Brendan Schaub‘s coaches were worried about him. He’d started his training camp roughly three months out from his fight with Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic at UFC 128, and the wear and tear was starting to show.

His body wasn’t reacting the way it should have, he said. He’d do one round of sparring or mitt work and feel exhausted. It was like he was getting in worse shape as the weeks wore on. To put it simply, he’d burned himself out. That’s when his coaches got together and insisted that he leave the gym and not come back for at least three days.

“I felt like I was on that Intervention show on A&E,” said Schaub (7-1). “They were like, ‘You can either take this help, or we’re not going to help you anymore.’ I was like, really? Where’s that bald guy who looks like Dr. Phil?”

You would assume that in the year 2011, with all of the slip-related injuries that have occured over the years that were attributed to the silk screened graphics on the mat, that athletic commissions would address the issue and come up with alternative means of printing ads on the canvas.

If you don’t think that the issue needs to be discussed, ask Nate Marquardt and Shane Carwin‘s training partner Justin Salas (10-3), who fought UFC veteran Rob Emerson for the lightweight title at Full Force Fight’s event in Colorado Saturday night if it’s a problem.
