Unless your name is Phillip Miller, you can’t expect to go through a career in cage-fighting without losing at least once. So in honor of Fedor Emelianenko’s first legitimate defeat, we decided to take a look at the best MMA fighters who still have flawless records. Whose “0” will be the next to go? And whose win streak is just getting started? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section…

#1: SHANE CARWIN (12-0, all wins by first-round stoppage)
Shane Carwin UFC
Notable victories:
Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96 (TKO R1), Frank Mir at UFC 111 (TKO R1, won UFC Interim Heavyweight Championship)

Next fight:
Brock Lesnar at UFC 116, 7/3/10

He may very well take his first loss this Saturday, but right now, Shane Carwin is the most dangerous undefeated fighter in MMA — as evidenced by the fact that no opponent has made it to the second round against him, and only two have lasted past the second minute. As he immediately showed in his UFC debut against Christian Wellisch at UFC 84, Carwin has a near-supernatural ability to generate power with his 4XL fists. Though he’s backed by impressive wrestling credentials, he’s only needed those hands to achieve victory in the UFC, knocking out top contenders Gabriel Gonzaga and Frank Mir in his last two fights. Brock, get ready to have your chin tested.

#2: MEGUMI FUJII (20-0, 16 wins by submission)
Megumi Fujii Mega Megu MMA
Notable victories: Lisa Ward at Bodog Fight: Vancouver (SUB R1), Mika Nagano at Smackgirl: Starting Over (SUB R1)

Next fight: Bellator women’s 115-pound tournament quarterfinals, opponent TBA

One of the most effective submission artists in the history of MMA, “Mega Megu” owns the longest active win streak in the sport, but suffers from the same problem that Cris Cyborg is facing in the States — a scarcity of legitimate challengers. Now that she’s signed on for Bellator’s 115-pound tourney later this year, she can prove her reputation as a living legend who can do more than armbar pint-sized scrubettes in Japan.

Shane Carwin Says UFC “Has Taken Good Care” of His Family

With Fedor Emelianenko now having a ‘real’ loss on his record, this Saturday’s UFC 116 tilt between champion Brock Lesnar and interim champ Shane Carwin has become even more important, as their will be little doubt that the winner is the world’s #1 heavyweight. Not that the fight wasn’t receiving a lot of hype already, which is more than understandable, considering the size, power and agility of each man (just ask Frank Mir what it feels like to be rag dolled by both).

Some of the interesting storylines heading into the fight have surrounded Shane Carwin, who first, fired back at critics and the UFC’s “talking heads” who said he wasn’t doing enough media, and more recently, when the imposing fighter posted what he was going to get paid (one wouldn’t use the word ‘transparency’ to describe Zuffa’s pay structure). Carwin says he’s not inline to get a piece of the pay-per-view pie (which Lesnar knows is delicious), and will make 80 grand if he wins. When asked by MMA Fighting’s Ben Fowlkes recently, if he’ll be looking to renegotiate provided he wins Saturday, Carwin said this:

“I do not think so. Beating Brock does not make you Brock. I will still need to insult most of the fighters in my division, flip off the fans, insult the biggest sponsors the UFC has and then and only then will I renegotiate with Zuffa. Dana and Lorenzo have taken good care of my family and I. They have given us more than they are obligated to and we are happy.”

(Cue drums and the obligatory cymbal please) See, there’s some nice verbal work from Carwin. To bet on Saturday’s card head here.

Shane Carwin may not be doing an all-out media blitz in advance of his heavyweight title fight against Brock Lesnar at UFC 116, but that doesn’t mean he’s not still available to his fans. He communicates with them regularly on his website, Shane-Carwin.com, and even recently posted his salary information for the upcoming title fight. Judging by their reactions online and on Twitter, they reward this accessibility with a fierce loyalty.

But to find out what’s going through his head as he prepares to take on Lesnar in what may now be a bout to determine not only the UFC champ, but also MMA’s No. 1 overall heavyweight. MMA Fighting reached out to Carwin over e-mail and got a few interesting responses about where he sees himself in the UFC hierarchy, and what he thinks of Lesnar’s take on MMA greats like Fedor Emelianenko.

Brock LesnarEarlier this week during a Strikeforce conference call, Fedor Emelianenko was asked about the upcoming UFC 116 fight between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin, and on Tuesday, the roles were reversed, as the UFC heavyweight title fight combatants were asked about the Russian MMA star.

Because rumblings of Emelianenko’s possible retirement have circulated in the last few days, Lesnar and Carwin were asked their opinions on never having the opportunity to face Fedor before he calls it a career.

“Good for Fedor. I hope he does retire. He’s the greatest champion of all-time,” he said with a laugh. Before anyone could ask him if he was being sarcastic, he made his feelings clear.

Brock Lesnar‘s illness and one-year layoff are the dominant storylines heading into his UFC 116 heavyweight title matchup, but his opponent Shane Carwin‘s life story is equally as compelling.

A former collegiate football All-American and Division II wrestling national champion, Carwin seemed on the way to a career in the NFL before an injury derailed those plans. Years later, he picked up MMA and proved a natural. To date, he’s won all 12 of his fights, never going past the first round. Still, he remains story B for the media and the underdog by the oddsmakers. Yet despite his soft-spoken nature and willingness to cede the pre-fight spotlight to his opponent, with a single sentence, Carwin summed up his ability to capture it back.

“If I touch anyone with my hands,” he said, “I can knock them out.”
