Shark Fights 15Press Release – Wednesday, May 4, 2011: Popular Texas based mixed martial arts fight promotion company, Shark Fight Promotions, announced today that Shark Fights 15 will be the first of many Shark Fight events that will be held outside of their home state of Texas. Shark Fights 15 will take place on Friday, May 27th at the Santa Anna Star Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. UFC veteran Chris Camozzi and Strikeforce veteran Joey Villasenor will headline the event.

2011 is already shaping up to be a break out year for Shark Fight Promotions. In recent months the organization has expanded their reach exponentially through newly formed network deals and strategic alliances with companies such as BCII. With all of the key players in place, Shark Fights is now ready to break into the national fight scene. Executives at Shark Fight Promotions are very optimistic about expanding into other states and are looking forward to the New Mexico event.

According to Shark Fight Promotions executive Wes Nolen, “Everyone in our organization is very excited about hosting shows not only in Texas, but other cities across the country as well. We are geared up for another action packed fight event and can’t wait to make our debut in Albuquerque.”

Nolen had this to say about the upcoming event, “We have a great show planned for New Mexico! Shark Fights 15 is stacked from top to bottom with elite contenders, including a main event bout between Chris Comozzi and Joey Villasenor. This is a very compelling match up and an important fight for both fighters. This is their opportunity to prove to the fans that they are still top contenders in the sport. Fight fans will not want to miss this!”

Chris Camozzi (14-4-0) is looking to bounce back after a recent submission loss to Kyle Noke at UFC 127. Prior to UFC 127, the hard hitting middleweight was on a four fight win streak. Comozzi has fought for notable fight organizations on both the local and national level and has been featured on HDNet Fights on numerous occasions. Camozzi was also a competitor in the eleventh season of The Ultimate Fighter in 2010 (Team Liddell vs. Team Ortiz). Although he had to withdraw from the show due to injury, he returned for the shows finale, defeating James Hammortree via unanimous decision.

His opponent, Strikeforce veteran Joey “Smokin Joe” Villasenor (27-8-0), looks to get back on the winning track after suffering two consecutive losses, including a recent loss to Danillo Villefort at Shark Fights 13. Prior to Shark Fights 13, Villasenor snapped a four-fight win streak (the second-longest of his career) with a unanimous-decision loss to Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at “Strikeforce St. Louis: Heavy Artillery. James IrvinA rematch between UFC vets Houston Alexander (11-6, 1NC) and James Irvin (15-6, 2NC) has been canceled by the Shark Fights promotion after an alleged positive steroid test by Irvin following a December Tachi Palace Fights 7 event.

MMAWeekly.com caught the announcement on Wednesday, following a report from Sherdog.com who confirmed the news of the alleged positive test for Epitrenbolone, an anabolic steroid, with California State Athletic Commission officials.

Promotion president Brent Medley gave this statement.

“Due to Irvin’s “alleged” steroid allegations and an undisclosed injury that Houston Alexander suffered during training, we were forced to pull the bout from the Shark Fights 14 line-up. We plan to reschedule the long awaited Alexander vs. Irvin re-match in the near future and are currently wrapping up negotiations for another very compelling Shark Fights 14 co-main event. Details will be announced soon, so stay tuned!”

Irvin’s last fight was not in December, he actually fought on Jan. 29 at a GC Young Guns event in Nevada. The bout was declared a ‘No Contest’ after Irvin landed an illegal knee in the first round. The Tachi Palace Fights bout took place on December 2, a first round submission loss to Jorge Oliveira in a heavyweight matchup. His record over the past six fights is 1-4 (1), last appearing in the UFC in that span with three straight defeats against Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 14, Alessio Sakara at UFC on Versus 1, and Igor Pokrajac at UFC on Versus 2.
