Dana White defends Power Slap un-education or hate UFC

According to a recent study, Power Slap Fighting is even more dangerous than initially thought. A whopping 78% of athletes suffered from likely brain injury.

Power Slap Fighting and Brain Damage

Power Slap is produced and promoted by UFC president Dana White who has been taking constant criticism of the sport since its inception. The University of Pittsburgh and the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System reviewed footage from the first season of Power Slap and found that 78% of participants displayed at least one sign of a concussion. These signs could include vacant stares, slow movements, coordination issues, and even vomiting or seizures.

The study revealed that of the 333 slaps reviewed, nearly 30% led to visible concussive signs, and 20 participants showed signs of multiple concussions. But this might be part of the appeal, as UFC fighter Donald Cerrone explained in an interview:

“I love it. This is, like, if you just want to watch knockout, knockout, knockout, and hear CTE brain damage, this is the event”

When it first debuted in 2022, Neurologist Dr. Nitin Sethi explained:

“Open-handed slaps delivered with such force to the opponent’s face frequently cause the person’s legs to buckle, at times suffer momentary – sometimes longer – loss of consciousness, and collapse to the floor. These are all concussive injuries of varying duration … In my professional opinion, those who partake in this ‘sport’ will also suffer the stigmata of chronic neurological injuries.”

On the study itself, neurologist Raj Swaroop Lavadi of the University of Pittsburgh said:

“Slap fighting may be entertaining to watch as a lay viewer, but as medical professionals, we found some aspects of the competitions to be quite concerning. Our end goal is to make all professional sports safer for the neurologic health of the athletes. It is really difficult to ban any sport, but it is possible to raise awareness about the associated harms.

Former heavyweight champion of the UFC Tim Sylvia has gotten off to a brutal start in his new combat sports venture, slap fighting.

The 6-foot-8 near 400lb behemoth competed under the Slap Fight Championship banner for the first time, and as was to be expected, had the knockout power to render his opposition unconscious. Now nearing 50 years of age, Sylvia has not competed in MMA since 2013, with his best title-winning years of 2003 and 2006 well in the rear-view mirror.

After first beating Ricco Rodriguez by knockout in his original UFC stint to win the title, Sylvia was banned whilst 16-0, testing positive for steroids. Six months later, He has his arm broken and was unceremoniously dumped by the UFC. He would leave only briefly, defeating Wes Sims on the independent circuit before being brought back to face Belarusian bruiser Andre Arlovski in a losing effort.

He would then repeat the process of being cut for a fight, winning, and then returning to the roster. This time though, he would fight his way up the rankings with back-to-back wins before rematching the aforementioned Arlovski. This time though, Tim Sylvia would catch Arlovski flush and knock him out, finalizing one of the more unlikely title recaptures in recent memory.

Tim Sylvia scores a knockout

BJPenn.com posted footage of the new slap-fighting debutant in action on Twitter:

It is often said that power is the last thing to go in ageing combatants, and Sylvia has it in abundance. In his 31 pro wins as an MMA fighter, 22 came by way of knockout for the man known as “The Maine-iac”, due to his hometown.

One can only wonder if former boss Dana White was in the wings, scouting for his own, soon-to-return slap spectacle.

‘Dana White’s Power Slap League’ may have approval from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, but it still has a major uphill battle to get widely accepted. Earlier this week, the NSAC gave formally gave Dana White, Hunter Campbell, Lorenzo Fertitta, and Lawrence Epstein the green light for this endeavor. The NSAC oversees all combat sports in the state of Nevada including MMA, Boxing, and now, slap fighting.

UFC President Dana White called out those who may be critical of ‘Power Slap League. White said that this sport will be safe due to it being regulated. While speaking to MMA Fighting, White explained:

“We run right toward regulation, regulate the sport to make sure it’s safe for everybody — because a lot of people are going to get involved in this just like they did MMA. What you want is you want to make sure there’s clear cut set rules, people have to take the proper medicals before, during, and after the fight to keep the thing safe. It should be regulated and Nevada did the right thing. I applaud them and that’s why they’re the most respected athletic commission in the world.”

However, government approval may not be enough for ‘Power Slap League’ to be safe. Even with medical checks and NSAC approval, it may not be safe. Neurologist Dr. Nitin Sethi spoke with IB.TV about the kind of injuries one can expect for participating in this sport. In plain language, Dr. Sethi explained the facts of the matter, he said:

“Open-handed slaps delivered with such force to the opponent’s face frequently cause the person’s legs to buckle, at times suffer momentary – sometimes longer – loss of consciousness, and collapse to the floor. These are all concussive injuries of varying duration. The ‘athlete’ who is on the receiving end of the slap has no option available to him to defend himself. These ‘slaps’ will add up. In my professional opinion, those who partake in this ‘sport’ will also suffer the stigmata of chronic neurological injuries.”

Dr. Sethi added that regulation and medical oversight is worthless, he continued:

“I disagree with the argument that better medical supervision of this ‘sport’ shall make it safer. I am not sure what a physician is meant to supervise here other than being the overseer of concussive injuries occurring under his or her watch.”

Ben Fowlkes speaks out on Power Slap League and safety

MMA journalist Ben Fowlkes laid out in plain language how the idea is surrounding Power Slap League. Fowlkes said:

“A nascent sport crawling out of the primordial ooze … The dumbest sport imaginable … The concept of slap fighting,” Fowlkes elaborated, “is about as simple as it gets. Two people stand across from each other and take turns hitting each other in the face with an open hand until, one way or another, someone has had enough. It might be the only combat sport where any form of defense is expressly, explicitly banned.”

‘Power Slap League’ is a sport with no technique or defense allowed. It is simply trading strikes. The strategies and meta of the sport can never develop. To add, even in its short history, there has been brain damage and death. Polish slap fighter Artur Walczak died after being hospitalized after a slap fight.

UFC president, Dana White has hit out at critics and commentators of his decision to organize a new slap fighting promotion alongside former UFC owner, Lorenzo Fertitta – labelling critics of the promotion as “goofball morons”.

White, the current UFC president and promotional leader, is currently situated in Abu Dhabi, UAE this weekend ahead of the promotion’s long-awaited UFC 280 pay-per-view event on ‘Fight Island’.

Fielding a championship doubleheader, the vacant lightweight championship is up for grabs between former titleholder, Charles Oliveira, and the #4 ranked, Islam Makhachev in a title showdown main event.

Defending bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling searches for his second title defense to boot in the night’s co-main event as he clashes with former two-time division kingpin, T.J. Dillashaw.

Away from the Octagon, however, White, and the above-mentioned, Fertitta, had applied to the NSAC (Nevada State Athletic Commission) for regulation, as they attempt to launch a new slap fighting organization – which has taken social media by storm in recent years and in different variations.

Dana White defends venture into slap fighting alongside Lorenzo Fertitta

Hitting out at those who speculate regarding the UFC leader’s decision to pursue such a surprising business venture, White labelled critics of his and the slap fighting organization as “goofball morons”.

“It’ll (slap fighting) be regulated exactly like this sport is,” Dana White told MMA Fighting reporter, Jose Youngs. “I saw a lot of goofballs out there talking sh*t – ‘goofballs’ being media guys – talking about, ‘What’s next, mallets?’ And stupid sh*t like that. The bottom line is, if you watch a boxing match, guys get hit with three to four hundred punches in a fight. These guys are gonna get hit with three slaps.”

“For these morons to be talking all this sh*t that they are about the athletic commission and stuff – the athletic commission did the right thing,” Dana White explained. “And so did we.” (Transcribed by MMA News)
