UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier believes Stipe Miocic is more deserving of being dubbed the greatest heavyweight of all time than recently retired Fedor Emelianenko.

After more than two decades of dominance, ‘The Last Emperor’ left his gloves in the cage on Saturday night following a first-round knockout loss against reigning Bellator MMA heavyweight champion Ryan Bader. Emelianenko closed out his career with an impressive 40-7 record which includes an iconic 31-1 run that lasted nearly a decade. With Emelianenko’s retirement still fresh in our minds, fans and fighters alike continue to debate who exactly is the greatest heavyweight fighter of all time, but for Daniel Cormier, the answer is clear.

“I don’t believe (Fedor’s) the greatest heavyweight of all time,” Cormier said on his ESPN show ‘DC & RC.’ “I think that belongs to Stipe Miocic, but only because Cain Velasquez was injured so much. I think in terms of skill, there’s no one that ever matched Cain Velasquez at heavyweight.

“But I believe that Stipe Miocic’s title defenses and the long reign that he had at the top of the division puts him atop. But Fedor is in the top five, and I don’t think that’s anything to be ashamed of” (h/t Yahoo! Sports)

Perhaps the biggest argument against Fedor Emelianenko’s GOAT status is the fact that he never stepped foot inside the Octagon. It’s a reality that UFC president Dana White openly regrets, but ‘The Last Emperor’ scored victories against a slew of former and eventual UFC champions including Andrei Arlovski, Mark Coleman, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Kevin Randleman, Tim Sylvia, Frank Mir, and Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson.

Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier Engaged in One of the UFC’s Greatest Trilogies

Engaging in one of the greatest trilogies in UFC history, Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic squared off inside the Octagon on three separate occasions between 2018 and 2020. ‘DC’ scored a first-round knockout in their initial meeting at UFC 226. A year later, Miocic would get his revenge by handing Daniel Cormier his second loss inside the Octagon via a fourth-round KO at UFC 241. The following summer, UFC 252 hosted the highly anticipated rubber match between the two. Miocic once again came out on top, this time by way of a unanimous decision.

As a former two-time UFC heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic holds multiple notable heavyweight records including the most consecutive heavyweight title defenses (3), the most title defenses overall (4), and is currently tied for the most wins in UFC heavyweight title fights (6). The Ohio native also holds the distinction of earning the most post-fight bonuses in UFC heavyweight history.

After the UFC botched their biggest free-agent re-signing of the year, former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic has come out with his own critique of the situation.

Per Dana White, Francis Ngannou was set to make the most money of any heavyweight in UFC history. However, he had a list of demands he wanted to be met. Among those, the demands included such things as health insurance for fighters on the roster, the ability to have his own independent sponsors not linked to the UFC, and the ability to make some forays into boxing while still being signed to the UFC brand.

Of those, the UFC would reportedly agree to none, and Francis Ngannou felt they wanted to give him a bunch of money so he would “shut up.

Stipe Miocic gives his take on the Francis Ngannou free agency situation

Here chimes in Stipe Miocic. Who would say on The MMA Hour: “… I get it. I mean, it’s going to be a long time before any of that happens — (Ngannou was) trying to move (the sport) in the right direction, which is great, but it’s going to be a long time before any of that happens.”

“I would’ve loved to have fought Francis again, but it’s not going to happen,” Miocic continued (H/T MMA Fighting). “Listen, it’s his decision. I wish he would’ve stayed because I wanted another crack at him. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out that way, but listen, he’s doing what’s best for him and his family. He thinks it’s the right way to go, and it’s his decision. I wish him nothing but the best, and I hope it works out.”

While a trilogy fight with Francis Ngannou was ideal for Stipe Miocic, his outlook on the future is simple. “(Ngannou) is gone,” Miocic said. “So whoever has that belt is the champ.”

One day, a boxing match between the two outside of the UFC may be ideal for Stipe Miocic. Who was very receptive to the idea of boxing Ngannou. “That’d be fantastic (to box Ngannou),” Miocic said. “Hell yeah, I love boxing.”

‘This Is Really Unfair!’ – Chael Sonnen Sticks Up For Jon Jones & Stipe Miocic As Dana White Defends Heavyweight Matchup

MMA fans worldwide are currently divided over Jon Jones defending the UFC heavyweight championship against Stipe Miocic next. This is primarily because Jones hasn’t fought since March 2023 and in the meantime, Tom Aspinall has solidified his claim on the undisputed title by winning and defending the interim heavyweight belt.

To add fuel to the fire, Dana White has missed no opportunity to call Jones the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world lately. He regularly shares this opinion on social media and even argued with the media for over 10 minutes about it recently.

Chael Sonnen has sided with White on the matter and has explained why fans shouldn’t complain about the imminent Jones vs. Miocic matchup…

Chael Sonnen Explains Why Dana White Won’t Cancel Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic For UFC Heavyweight Title

Sonnen reacted to White defending Jones vs. Miocic in a DWCS press conference on his official YouTube channel recently. The former UFC title contender reminded viewers that this match was booked before Aspinall knocked out Sergei Pavlovich in less than 90 seconds.

Sonnen remembered when “Bones” agreed to fight Miocic soon after his flawless win over Ciryl Gane. He pointed out that fans didn’t necessarily oppose the booking. However, things turned complex when the champ had to pull out due to a shoulder injury. He’s been out of action for over 18 months now, and the UFC still not confirming a date for his return is a bone of contention among many.

“This is really unfair, what you’re doing to Jon Jones. This is really unfair, what you’re doing to Stipe. It’s unfair that Dana White had to answer this question. So, let me take your short-term memories, down memory lane.”

Aspinall has been constantly calling out Jones as well since defending the interim UFC heavyweight championship against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304. Yet again, he emerged victorious via knockout in the first and believes that he should now get the chance to unify the belts once and for all.

As per “The American Gangster”, White is correct in not disrespecting Miocic by taking away arguably his final shot at the title. The former UFC heavyweight champ hasn’t lost a fight or sustained an injury, due to which Sonnen believes that he still deserves to fight Jones.

“It’s the same fight with the same guys. They haven’t done anything different. Stipe has not slowed down. Stipe has not lost. He hasn’t done anything in front of you that’s any different. And I mean, I will just tell you, like, in this sport, you’re not wrong. Fans going to do what fans want. I understand it, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything quite to this degree in an attempt to get Aspinall in there with Jon.”

“It turned nasty against Stipe. That’s the part that’s incorrect. As soon as Stipe falls on his face. As soon as he slips on a banana peal. Go ahead and go after him, that’s fair game, that’s this sport. That hasn’t happened. Stipe has not done that. Stipe has not done anything like that. As a matter of fact, he got a little bit longer to train and this is a consummate professional. He would’ve used that time very wisely.

Despite the backlash, it is safe to assume that the UFC will book Jones vs. Miocic sometime in 2024. It is also worth noting that Aspinall is guaranteed to be the backup fighter for this title match.

Jon Jones Stipe Miocic UFC UFC 285

Former two-time undisputed UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones has branded ex-heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic as the greatest heavyweight of all-time ahead of his UFC 285 return. And admits that he’s sad to have missed out on sharing the Octagon with the veteran in his March 4. heavyweight division debut.

Jones, a former two-time undisputed light heavyweight champion under the banner of the UFC, is slated to headline UFC 285 on March 4. at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada – competing for undisputed heavyweight gold against Ciryl Gane.

A native of Rochester, Jones has yet to return to active competition since February 2020, on that occasion defeating Dominick Reyes in a close, unanimous decision win in Houston, Texas.

Jon Jones expresses his excitement ahead of UFC 285 return in March

Sharing his thoughts on his impending Octagon return in two months’ time, Jones admitted he was excited to make his comeback three years since his last UFC walk.

“I’m excited, I’m grateful, I feel humble, I feel appreciated by the company I work for, I feel like I’m in a really good place,” Jon Jones told The Underground during a recent interview. “MMA feels fun to me again. Obviously, with being our for three years and a new division, there’s a lot of questions that cause me to stay up long nights, but it keeps me sharp. That’s something I felt like I didn’t have at light heavyweight toward the end. It just felt like another day at the office.”

“This doesn’t feel like another day at the office,” Jones explained. “This feels very different. The nerves, anxiety, it’s all back, and I do good when I’m under pressure.”

If he could choose an opponent given the departure of former undisputed champion, Francis Ngannou, Jones admits he’s upset to miss out on a heavyweight division debut against Miocic.

“I think the fight that meant the most to me was fighting Stipe Miocic,” Jon Jones explained. “That’s the fight that actually means the most to me because Stipe is the greatest heavyweight of all time. I’m not looking past Ciryl Gane at all. I’m very honored to fight Ciryl Gane and I knew it would be happening eventually, inevitably, but that’s the fight I was actually bummed didn’t happen.”
