The loudest trash talker in the UFC says Tyron Woodley won’t get the coveted UFC 230 main event slot.

Interim UFC welterweight champion Colby Covington (or former champion, who knows) has ramped up his callouts of Woodley. A sinus injury for Covington prolonged their expected title fight earlier this year. The consensus is they’ll meet for the title next because of their long-standing rivalry.

Woodley recently stated he would be ready to face Covington at November’s UFC 230 on one condition. Covington isn’t buying that, however, telling BJ Penn (via MMA Mania) that was “fake news.” They won’t be fighting at that coveted event because the UFC simply hates Woodley according to Covington:

“Tyron, that’s fake news about his hand being hurt. He was saying he was ready to go, but I think it’s more that the UFC, they don’t want to give him that spot.

“They don’t want to reward him that main event, ’cause they hate him. He doesn’t know how to sell fights, he doesn’t know how to promote fights, he just complains, man. He just consistently shoots himself in the foot every time he opens his mouth.”

Woodley has received an endless amount of criticism for many topics. Some fans believe he is not promoted due to the fact he put on two boring title fights against Demian Maia and Stephen Thompson last year. UFC president Dana White has repeatedly blasted Woodley in the media.

Woodley claims the UFC is unwilling to promote him, at least in part, due to racism. He believes the UFC has failed to secure him the African-American contingent of Floyd Mayweather fans.

Regardless, November 3’s UFC 230 from Madison Square Garden in New York City is without a main event. The pay-per-view card features the long-awaited return of Nate Diaz against Dustin Poirier. That means it should sell well on pay-per-view.

It’s unknown who will headline the event, however, and the UFC may not want to give Woodley the massive PPV cash that comes along with it.

Should they?

UFC lightweight and welterweight Nate Diaz has a reputation in the mixed martial arts world as being a bit of a bad boy. His ‘gangster’ image is part of what helps sell his fights, and people have come to admire his no-BS style of interviews. Since beating the UFC featherweight champion in a thrilling 170-pound affair at UFC 196, the younger of the infamous Diaz brothers has finally stepped in to the limelight.

The Diaz brothers have always been cult idols, with a following within the MMA community that rivalled many other mainstream stars, but it really wasn’t until the last two years that they had received the attention they fought so hard for over the years.

For Nick Diaz, after losing in fights to Carlos Condit, Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva (later a no-contest), his push in to super stardom came thanks to a highly controversial hearing with the Nevada Athletic Commission. After popping for weed in the fight with Silva, during which time the Brazilian was also caught but for anabolic steroids, Nick received a hefty five year ban from competition. is plight and eventual lighter sentence saw huge stars backing the ‘free Nick Diaz’ cause.

So who are the Diaz brothers? If you ask anyone in their community, they might well have a very different opinion than your average MMA fan. This post from Gracie Fighter 209 on Instagram shows Nate Diaz receiving an award from Assemblyman Jim Cooper. He is honored for hard work and giving back to the community:

Of course it wouldn’t be a Nate Diaz story if we didn’t look back to the single most publicized moment of his wild career. The day after Diaz’s submission victory over Conor McGregor will forever be known as ‘Not Surprised Sunday,’ as his epic post fight words echoed across the web in a frenzy of hilarity and disbelief.

Here’s to you Nate Diaz!

[VIDEO] This is What a Diaz Family Reunion Looks Like

We won’t waste much of your time with another behind-the-scenes look into the life of Nick Diaz, but there is something fascinating — sublime, really — about these videos that we here at CagePotato simply cannot look away from. The latest entry (and by “latest,” we mean uploaded in 2009) in the Diaz saga, entitled “family vids 1,” eclipses even “You can get organic food with welfare” on our list of all-time favorite Diaz moments captured on film, so we simply had to pass it along in lieu of any news worth writing about. You know, for science.

Despite being less than a minute in length, “family vids 1” tells us more about the Diaz family than a million hostile interviews ever could. Revelations include:

-The Diaz family is not the real-life cast of The Wire, as previously understood
-Even when surrounded by family, Nick Diaz is paralyzed by social anxiety
-The Diaz’s have a harder time figuring out cameras than they do blenders.
Nate Diaz *loves* posing for photos.

That last epiphany is easily the most shocking, especially to someone who once asked Nate for a photo at an MMA convention and was told to “take a short walk off a tall building.” Clearly Diaz doesn’t understand physics, because that…would’ve…killed…me…

Nick Diaz Visits the Welfare Office, And It Is Sad [VIDEO]

(Props: NickDiaz209 via r/MMA)

Let’s just clear something up first: Nick Diaz isn’t applying for welfare himself in the above clip, although he does remain retired from fighting and has no passive income to speak of. Nick is simply along for the ride as two of his friends fill out forms for some good ‘ol financial assistance. (One of the friends appears to be Chris Diaz, a knife-packing entourage member who may or may not be related to the skinnier, more successful Diazes.) Though the mood among the three gentlemen remains light, the video is still massively depressing for the following reasons:

– Man, is the Stockton welfare office packed or what?

– As Diaz observes, that little girl is indeed doing “snow angels” on the floor.

– Chris clearly has no intention of supporting himself through honest labor. “They’re gonna ask me for my work number?” he asks. “Come on.” Nick helpfully suggests that he lists “jiu-jitsu bum” as his occupation.

As a brief, unsettling window into Nick’s daily life, this clip ranks up there with Throwing Knives in the Kitchen, Failed Front Flip, and Guy Carrying Large Marijuana Plant. Enjoy, I guess?

So We’re Serious About this War MMA Thing, Huh? Main Event of War MMA 1 Confirmed

(Screen capture of the War MMA website, NickDiazPromotions.com.)

If you assumed that War MMA would never get past the planning stages, then do I have a surprise for you: It looks like Nick Diaz got that temporary promoter’s license, because War MMA 1 is officially set for June 22 from the Stockton Arena and the main card appears set for the inaugural event.

Hell, tickets even went on sale, with ringside (yes, as in a ring not a cage) seats still available as of writing this!

Unsurprisingly, the main event will feature a Team Cesar Gracie fighter – UFC veteran Daniel Roberts (14-4, 3-4 UFC) – fighting against the most formidable local opponent the promotion can find. Via NickDiazPromotions.com:

Fighting out of San Francisco, Daniel Roberts is set to face challenger Justin Baesman from the East Bay of California. Roberts has had numerous bouts in the UFC and trains with the Cesar Gracie Fight Team. Baesman now with a 12-4 record, has looked good as of late and a win over Roberts would catapult him to the next level of his career.

As for the rest of the main card, there are a few names you may recognize:

Main Card:
Daniel Roberts vs. Justin Baesman
Antonio Banuelos vs. Benny Vinson
Caleb Mitchell vs. Evan Esguerra
Mike Persons vs. Clayton McKinney
Darin Cooley vs. Cody Gibson
Roy Boughton vs. Liron Wilson
Chris Quitiquit vs. Dominic Clark

There haven’t been any announced bouts for the undercard, so if you’re holding out on hope that there will be a gloriously preventable screw-up somewhere in the planning of this event, it may come here. But as for now, things appear to be running very smoothly, despite all of us expecting the contrary.

So now the only question that remains is, do you plan on watching War MMA’s inaugural event in a few weeks?

UFC Fan Pulls Guard, Sinks Guillotine Choke, Saves Family From Carjacker

A Stockton, California, man proved this weekend that watching mixed martial arts does in fact make you a tough guy, and that pulling guard in a street fight can work. Our friends over at News 10 Stockton, have the story.

“Abel Simmons has been a huge fan of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) for years. But never did he imagine that he would be using the moves to defend himself or his family from a carjacking suspect.

Simmons, 29, was able to stop and hold down his attacker until police came.

Simmons says his family was pulling up to their home on E. Jefferson Street Saturday night. They had just returned from watching a UFC fight.

They were in the driveway when a man came up and started pounding on the back window of their SUV. Then, the man tried opening the back door where Simmon’s sons – a newborn and a 2 year old – were sleeping. Fortunately, the door was locked.

Simmons, who was sitting in the passenger seat, jumped out out and tried to stop the man. His wife, who was driving, called 911.”

The alleged car jacker then punched Simmons in the face and that’s when shit got real. Simmons says he changed levels, wrapped his arms around the assailant’s legs, and took him down to the ground.

The alleged car jacker then punched Simmons in the face and that’s when shit got real. Simmons says he changed levels, wrapped his arms around the assailant’s legs, and took him down to the ground.

From there, the freaking guy went for an armbar. Turns out, Simmons was driving his family home from watching UFC 160 when the alleged perpetrator attempted to get into their car. Inspired by Cain Velasquez, Simmons got the take down, looked for the quick submission but the jacker slipped out. Ultimate Dad didn’t have his position secure before he went for the submission.

Simmons then says he transitioned to a rear naked choke but the wily car jacking veteran once more displayed impressive submission defense and worked free. In defense of his family, however, Simmons would not be denied and he then latched onto a front head lock, worked it into a guillotine choke grip and pulled guard.

Help from neighbors and police arrived with Simmons in full control of his alleged attacker’s neck and body. Simmons demonstrates the technique he first saw on television then mimicked on the street in the video above and you’ll notice that he actually does a good job of cutting an angle to finish the choke, instead of pulling straight back as many do.

Then, Simmons put the Stockton stamp on the dude by talking smack to him as he went out. “Looks like you’ll be going to jail tonight,” he said.

Get this guy six months of sprawl training, and I think the UFC has a new contender. First things first, though, Nick and Nate Diaz need to go visit this fellow Stockton soldier and give him his props.
