With the MMA world still abuzz with speculation as to whether or not Chuck Liddell will finally call it quits, not to mention the daily drama / intrigue that always accompanies the UFC (perhaps you’re following Chael Sonnen’s recent memory lapses regarding his Twitter account), tomorrow’s Strikeforce card seems to have really been lost in the shuffle. Perhaps, just mentioning it has caused you to say ‘oh shit that’s right, there’s a Strikeforce Wednesday.’

Now granted, you may not weep uncontrollably if you don’t have Showtime and can’t catch the card, but the headliner between Renato “Babalu” Sobral and Robbie Lawler definitely has the potential to be damn exciting, as does the Tim Kennedy vs. Trevor Prangley tilt. Prangley is a UFC vet that could give a lot of top middleweights a run for their money, while Kennedy continues to impress, with his only loss since 2001 coming against “Mayhem” Miller. In a recent interview with Fight Hype, the Army Ranger had this to say about facing Prangley tomorrow:

“He’s a great wrestler and he’s hard to take down and he has a great chin as well, but he’s slow. He’s slow on his feet and his footwork is not that great. I would like to pick him apart a whole bunch on the feet and finish him with an exciting knockout, like all the fans want to see.”

(Fedor, didn’t I lay out the black tie for you?)

Ray Hui from MMAFighting spoke with M-1 Global director of operations, Evgeni Kogan and asked him why the heavily anticipated Fedor Emelianenko-Alistair Overeem Strikeforce bout has yet to materialize.

According to Kogan, contrary to popular belief, his company has very little to do with picking opponents for their client and he says that they would take a fight with Overeem if it were offered to them.

"The matchmaking for this is more coming out of Strikeforce than from our side. We are open to fighting basically whoever is put in front of us," Kogan explained. "There has never been a point where [a fight with Overeemt] was offered and turned down. M-1 management is not ducking Overeem, and once again, if that fight is presented to us, then that’s what that fight will be."

For John Kolosci, it’s been an oftentimes strange trip, indeed.

The road hasn’t always been smooth and the biggest of his ups have been quickly followed by downs. He hopes maybe this time will be different.

After a unanimous decision loss to fellow Indiana-based fighter Shamar Bailey on Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers in Chicago last November, Kolosci struggled to a split decision win over Bill Hill in January. Things were looking average, at best, for the welterweight.

But he may have changed his fortunes Friday night after submitting nine-time UFC veteran and American Top Team fighter Luigi Fioravanti in just 42 seconds.

Robbie Lawler vs Renato “BABALU” Sobral

Robbie Lawler is fighting Babalu at a catch weight of 195. I think this fight is favored for Sobral at the heavier weight as Sobral is dropping down.

Lawler known for his heavy hands and Sobral is known for being an ace on the ground. We haven’t seen anyone test Lawler’s ground game aside from Jason Miller years ago.

I lean towards Sobral because Sobral is good on his feet (good enough) and if it gets on the ground I think its fight over for Lawler.

MARIUS ZAROMSKIS vs EVANGELISTA CYBORG

I don’t see how Zaromskis loses this fight.

TREVOR PRANGLEY vs TIM KENNEDY

This is a cool fight actually. Prangley is a tough fighter who basically runs drawn out battles to a decision. However, Tim Kennedy, in my opinion is one of the most underrated fighters in all of mma. I’m not saying he is top ten, but he is right up there with some of the biggest names in terms of ability. He is a very smart fighter that has exceptional wrestling, takedowns, and submissions.

I expect Kennedy to win this fight.

KJ NOONS VS CONOR HUEN

I’m not really familiar with Huen, but I’ve checked his fight list. I lean towards the more powerful, explosive Noons here. How do I know that Huen is not explosive? All I know as that hes not going to be more explosive than Noons.

(Maybe now I can get some RE$PECT!)

I just got back from the MMA Expo in Toronto and will have a bunch of interesting video, audio and text versions of interviews I did with Forrest Griffin, Karo Parisyan, King Mo’, Bibiano Fernandes, Firas Zahabi, Shonie Carter, Ryan Ford and Dan Miller up on the site this week.

Unfortunately, I was unable to land one with Jake Shields, as, immediately following his teaching session at the Paradise Warrior Retreat, he was whisked away in a car to catch a plane to Vancouver to attend tonight’s UFC show.

I had a small window of time for a brief exchange as he walked to the parking lot, so I handed him the Photoshop I did of him outside the pawn shop after selling the Strikeforce belt and questioned why it was so important that he be at the show tonight. I asked him if we can expect an announcement at the show that he was Octagon-bound, to which he replied, "Not yet," but what else could he say if an announcement is forthcoming?

I’d say there’s a pretty good chance we’ll hear something tonight.

*FYI, he had already seen the picture as a someone had sent him a copy.

"Yeah, I’ve seen that one. It’s funny, but it isn’t real," he said. "Somebody Photoshopped it."
