UFC Suspends Anthony Johnson Following New Allegations of Domestic Abuse and Intimidation

(Photo via Getty)

UFC light-heavyweight contender Anthony Johnson has been placed on an indefinite suspension, following new abuse allegations from the mother of his children. Here’s the vague, detail-free official statement via UFC.com:

We are aware of the situation involving Anthony Johnson. As a result, we are suspending him indefinitely. We are using a third-party law firm to conduct a formal investigation and once we have more information, we’ll determine whether further course of action is necessary.

As with Nick Diaz’s DUI arrests, the UFC wants you to know that it’s aware of the situation, but the promotion no interest in informing fans what that situation is. BloodyElbow has the entire rundown on the new allegations against Johnson, but here’s the short version:

— Two years ago, Anthony Johnson allegedly punched the mother of two of his children in the face, knocking out two of her teeth. The incident took place at the victim’s place of employment, a supplement store. The victim claims she has security footage of the incident in her possession.

— The victim says that Johnson talked her out of pressing charges at the time. Since then, the victim has regularly received threatening calls and text messages, which she believes have been coming from Johnson’s friends.

— As we previously mentioned here, Johnson was arrested in 2009 after an altercation with a different woman; Johnson allegedly “pushed her around, picked her up by her armpits and slammed her to the ground. He then put her in a headlock and dragged her up a flight of stairs.”

— For the 2009 incident, Johnson was charged with domestic violence, battery, death threats and destroying a phone to prevent the report of a crime, and pleaded “nolo contendere” in 2010 to a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence, for which he was sentenced to serve three years probation, community service, and domestic violence counseling.

— Johnson’s lawyer Frank Smith issued the following statement on the recent allegations: “Anthony categorically denies all allegations and looks forward to his court date in the civil matter, where the truth and lies will be established.”

Following the announcement of his UFC suspension, Johnson had this to say:

The shit ppl will say and the lengths ppl will go just to tell a Fucking lie is ridiculous.
That’s all I’m going to say and thank you all for the support and positive feedback that I’m getting.

We’ll keep you posted as this situation develops. Keep in mind that the UFC has suspended Johnson, not released him; the UFC reserves the right to quickly re-instate him if the alleged victim stops cooperating with the investigation.

NSAC Attemps to Block Chael Sonnen From Competing at Metamoris 4, Threatens Him With Massive Fines

(Life was so much simpler then.)

Last month, the Nevada State Athletic Commission smacked Chael Sonnen with a two-year suspension after he tested positive for a pharmacy’s worth of unapproved substances, following two separate random drug tests back in May. As Sonnen and PED-apologist Ralek Gracie see it, that suspension shouldn’t stop the American Gangster from headlining a submission-grappling event in California this weekend. But according to the NSAC, it should stop him from competing, and they’re pretty upset about it.

Bleacher Report’s Jeremy Botter broke the news that the NSAC is attempting to prevent Sonnen from competing at Metamoris 4, scheduled for this Saturday, August 9th, in Los Angeles. As Botter wrote:

Multiple sources confirm NAC has threatened to fine Sonnen $250,000 per failed drug test violation if he competes at Metamoris. Sonnen has hired Vegas lawyer Ross Goodman to represent him in the case…Sonnen camp’s contention is that grappling is not fighting and suspension shouldn’t cover it.”

A follow-up report from MMAJunkie adds more details:

A follow-up report from MMAJunkie adds more details:

A source close to the commission, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, today told MMAjunkie that the commission sent a letter to Sonnen this past week informing him that the grappling match violated the terms of his suspension, which was handed down in July after a disciplinary hearing on multiple failed drug tests at UFC 175.

In turn, Sonnen’s legal rep, Jeff Meyer, sent a response that challenged the NSAC’s definition of competing. At the time of this writing, it appears Sonnen will meet Galvao as scheduled…Although the grappling competition is not sanctioned by a state athletic commission, as it isn’t considered a combat sport in the same way as are boxing and MMA, the NSAC wants Sonnen to withdraw from the event.

The NSAC’s motivations behind this pursuit are obvious, and fairly logical. Even though submission grappling isn’t technically defined as a “combat sport” — which is bizarre, but whatever — the mere sight of Sonnen participating in any athletic competition directly after a suspension makes the Nevada commission look toothless. In other words, the NSAC needs to drop the hammer in order to send a message that their suspensions should be respected.

But how much jurisdiction does Nevada actually have to regulate what goes on in California? That question might only be settled by a long legal dispute. We’ll keep you posted…

And Now He’s Suspended: Louis Gaudinot Suspended Six Months After Failed Drug Test

Louis Gaudinot‘s 73-second submission win over Phil Harris at UFC Fight Night 37 has been overturned into a no contest. This comes off the back of Gaudinot’s drug test failure; he tested positive for the banned diuretic hydrochlorothiazide. As the event took place in the UK, it was the UFC that handed him a six month suspension rather than an athletic commission.

This comes off the back of Gaudinot’s drug test failure; he tested positive for the banned diuretic hydrochlorothiazide. As the event took place in the UK, it was the UFC that handed him a six month suspension rather than an athletic commission.

Gaudinot issued a statement not long after the news of his drug test failure and suspension broke:

I have great respect for the UFC, the sport of MMA, and my opponent. I would never do anything to disrespect any of them. I would also never do anything to tarnish my name, my teammates, and family. While I deny any wrongdoing, I will respect the decision of the UFC and look forward to getting back in the cage in pursuit of the UFC flyweight championship. I thank my family, teammates and fans for their support.

A bit of a bummer, we were hoping for Dennis Siver levels of palpable guilt but instead we just got a generic “I didn’t do it but I’m not gonna fight it because I actually did do it” answer. Gaudinot, a flyweight, is now 6-3 (1) in his MMA career. Before fighting Harris, he was coming off a disappointing decision loss to Phil Harris. With the suspension, Gaudinot won’t be able to grace the Octagon again until September. Harris now has a sterling record of 22-11 (2). The had UFC justifiably shit-canned Harris after the fight, but have apparently brought him back to face Neil Seery at UFC Fight Night 46 next month. As Nick Diaz would say, “It’s whatever.”
