Dominick Cruz Reveals Why He’s Fighting Cody Garbrandt

Dominick Cruz isn’t defending his title against No. 6-ranked Cody Garbrandt at Dec. 30’s UFC 207 because “No Love” is the highest ranked contender, but rather because he feels as if the hard-hitting Garbrandt will bring in the most sales. “Some people say somebody deserves it, that doesn’t matter to me,” Cruz told MMA Fighting.

“I don’t care what anybody else thinks or what anybody else deserves, because there’s no validity behind that. There’s nothing.”

“Rankings don’t mean anything,” Cruz said. “I don’t care about rankings. I care about sales. And right now, Cody Garbrandt is running his mouth enough, he’s writing such a big check that he can’t cash, that I can’t wait to take it all from him and stuff it down his throat.”

Not only does Cruz feel as if “No Love” will bring him more money, but he also feels as if there’s a built in story line with the bout given his past history with Team Alpha Male, a team led by Cruz’s bitter rival Urijah Faber. “No Love” has slowly become one of Team Alpha Male’s most prominent contenders:

“What the difference is, is that he comes from a storyline of guys that I’ve been beating down for 10-plus years from a camp called Alpha Fail and his biggest coach is a guy that I’ve been smashing for 10-plus years,” Cruz said.

“It’s just there. It’s all there for the taking. It’s all there for everybody on their entire squad that’s going to be sad and crying again after I smash their boy. So it’s perfect for me. I love it.”

“The fight interests me, because he’s the next guy in line that the UFC wants me to fight and he’s been talking, yes,” Cruz said. “Anybody who’s said as much foul things about anybody as he’s said to me, you’d want to fight him. It just makes it a little more fun.”

Who do you expect to come out on top at UFC 207?

Julian Wallace, Charged With Domestic Violence, Gets KO’d By Team Alpha Male Fighter

The title pretty much says it all. Julian Wallace has been accused of hitting his ex-girlfriend and just recently plead guilty to the charges. While we may not know the entirety of the situation, the fact that Wallace has done a number of questionable things in his past takes the sympathy card off of the table. No man should put his hands on a woman and Julian Wallace found out the hard way how being a complete douche nozzle can be when he decided to train with a room full of killers. The top end of the UFC bantamweight division has really come of age in the last few years. The fairy tale story of TJ Dillashaw’s victory against Renan Barao at UFC 173 really engaged fans, who had already been paying close attention to Dominick Cruz. Barao was gunning for legendary status when he claimed Cruz’s vacated belt, and Dillashaw was a huge underdog when they fought. Then it was ‘The Dominator’s’ turn to overcome huge odds. After a run of harrowing injuries meant Cruz had to give up the belt, he returned to reclaim the title from Dillashaw in January of this year.

Completing one of the greatest career comebacks ever, Cruz then defended the belt against old rival Urijah Faber at UFC 199. All the while Dillashaw’s former Alpha Male team mate Cody Garbrandt was gaining steam. ‘No Love’ is now 10-0, five wins deep in to his UFC career including a brutal knockout over Thomas Almeida. After Dillashaw split from TAM to join Duane Ludwig in Colorado, a triangle of beef was formed. Following his quick finish against Takeya Mizugaki, Garbrandt continued his tirades towards ‘The Dominator,’ but he isn’t quite done with TJ either.

No Love

Cody Garbrandt has certainly been living up to his nickname lately. As well as starching his opponents with ruthless precision inside the octagon, ‘No Love’ has been taking aiming at the champions current and former. A growing feud between himself and Dominick Cruz will probably lead to an entertaining title fight, but Garbrandt is still involved in banter with TJ Dillashaw too.

This Instagram post by ‘The Viper’ emerged yesterday, as he offers Dominick Cruz a $100K bet on their next fight. Never one to sleep on an opportunity, Garbrandt dropped the USADA bomb on his old teammate in the comments section. Check it out:

Former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw got a lot of flack for leaving Team Alpha Male in 2015, which is owned by fellow UFC fighter Urijah Faber, for a more lucrative contract to train at Team Elevation in Colorado. For fighters, the gym fees to train at that said gym can be costly. For a UFC champion one would think it would not be, but in fact, it is. Some think that he made the smart and business savvy decision while some disagree with that theory and think he should have stayed at the gym that transformed him into a champion.

Welterweight MMA fighter Adam Corrigan, who trains at Team Alpha Male, spoke with Bloody Elbow and went off on Dillashaw.

“T.J. was probably one of the worst training partners of all time, no matter who you were,” he said. “We have a lot of kids that are 18, 20 years old — they love MMA and just want to train with a teammate. They pay for it, and it’s the experience. You also get some serious fighters that come and train.

“[Dillashaw] would spar with the kids that were there just to have fun and learn and be part of an experience. And he would beat the living sh-t out of them — like, till they’re crying on the mat. And I’m like, ‘What the f-ck are you doing man, just chill out. These aren’t the people to be beating up on right now.’ That’s just the person he was.”

Corrigan explained that Dillashaw just wanted to train with Ludwig and picked what he did and didn’t do while training.

“T.J. wanted to train with [former Team Alpha Male head coach] Duane [Ludwig],” he said. “They have a really good relationship. Very tight, very good, they understand each other. The same kind of psychotic brain, ‘Who cares about the world? Let’s focus on each other,’ type of thing. Having him gone, I didn’t really care. I got along with him as a mate but it didn’t really bother me or hurt me at all. He left and I was like, ‘Cool.’ It’s better for the younger guys at the gym because they’re not getting concussed every weekend.”

“If he had done it the right way, T.J. would probably still be in the good books with us,” Corrigan said. “But he lied about it for a long time. He said, ‘No, I’m not doing this, no, I’m not doing this.’ It was pretty tough because the team was like, ‘Hold on a second, you’re kind of just stabbing us in the back.’ He just lied about it.

Corrigan believes that Dillashaw made a mistake by leaving the gym just because of money.

“And that’s the thing. He should’ve just said, ‘Hey, this is what I’ve been offered, they offered me to do this, and offered me to do that.’ I think MusclePharm offered him $60,000 a year to train,” he said. “In the long-term of things, that’s not a lot of money. You’re sacrificing all the training partners you’ve got — all the top guys in the world — to train with a bunch of guys you don’t know. And you don’t know if they’re going to push you or not.”

Reigning UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has a long and rocky history with Sacramento based gym Team Alpha Male, a team founded and led by Cruz’s most bitter rival, Urijah Faber. Cruz has most notably battled with “The California Kid” on three different occasions, winning twice with the most recent victory coming earlier this month at UFC 199. With a clear cut unanimous decision victory, “The Dominator” closed the door on a near decade long rivalry with Faber.

Cruz has also had bad blood with ex-Team Alpha Male member TJ Dillashaw, who “The Dominator” outpointed last January to recapture the title. In Cruz’s mind, the rivalry between him and Team Alpha Male will never end:

“I’ve been facing these guys since the beginning of my career. I said it a long time ago on one of my interviews that I chop one head off and another one just pops right back up,” Cruz said (transcription by MMA Fighting). “Those guys are never going to stop hating me. They’re never going to stop wanting to beat me.”

“Faber’s going to keep promoting these guys because he collects a percentage off promoting these guys.”

Cruz often accuses Faber of collecting money off rising fighters from the gym, and the next surging Team Alpha Male bantamweight appears to be No. 7-ranked Cody “No Love” Garbrandt. Garbrandt recently scored a brutal knockout victory over Thomas Almeida, and Faber has said that he’ll eventually be a tough test for Cruz.

The champion, however, isn’t worried about “No Love”, and actually issued a challenge to his rivals over in Sacramento:

“To me, it was just normal, Team Alpha Fail business. Them talking, trying to skip positions in the line,” Cruz said. “The way I see it is, just get in line man. Beat somebody that’s ranked in the top 3.”

“That’s how I feel about those guys, any of those guys. Don’t try to talk your way to the front of the line.”

Has Team Alpha Male jumped the gun on Garbrandt, or is the young knockout artist on his way to a title shot?

What’s Next For Cody Garbrandt?

After an electric and crushing victory against Brazilian Thomas Almeida, Team Alpha Male’s Cody “No Love” Garbrandt earned some major respect while remaining undefeated as a professional. Garbrandt also positioned himself for a title run at the Bantamweight belt. His quick and technical striking overwhelmed Almeida from the opening bell, and his raw, impressive power earned him his fourth victory in the UFC and third by KO/TKO. Who he should fight next; however, is a hard question to answer.

The current Bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz, is of course fighting #3 ranked Uriah Faber at the upcoming UFC 199. #1 ranked and former champion TJ Dillashaw will face off against #5 Raphael Assuncao at UFC 200 for what has to be the number one contender to battle the winner of Cruz vs. Faber 3.  Renan Barao sits at the #2 spot but has moved to Featherweight and just suffered a loss to Jeremy “Lil’ Heathen” Stephens in last night’s co-main event.

#4 Aljamain Sterling was defeated last night as well by #8 Bryan Caraway, who will be looking for his next opponent too. #6 Michael “Mayday” Mcdonald will battle #11 John Lineker in July.

In the post fight press conference, Garbrandt expressed interest in fighting in his home state of Ohio at UFC 203 in Cleveland.

Because Almeida was Garbrandt’s first ranked opponent, Garbrandt could just be given another ranked opponent, even one who currently sits behind Almeida. While that fight may seem to be taking a step backward, it would give him a chance to feature on a pay-per-view main card as a ranked fighter while allowing him another chance to establish himself further. He is probably still behind Bryan Caraway at this point. If Michael Mcdonald wins his next fight, then perhaps Caraway and McDonald would square off for the next number one contender spot.

Depending on where Garbrant is ranked, he could fight the loser of Dillashaw vs. Assuncao, but that would be a quick turn for both of those fighters to get ready for UFC 203. “Rewarding” Garbrandt with the loser of a match also seems a bit unproductive too.

Garbrandt refused to call anyone out after his victory last night, however. He said he would be happy with any ranked fighter for UFC 203, a request the UFC will certainly be glad to oblige. The Team Alpha Male product is on the fast track to UFC gold, stating his case that the future is now.
