Matt HamillAt long last, Matt Hamill finally is getting what he has been asking for for a while – and the UFC won’t start him slowly.

Hamill (10-2, 9-2 UFC) has been asking for a Top 10 opponent, and UFC president Dana White said after his last win that he’d get one. After a series of changes, Hamill gets arguably the most important fight of his career at UFC 130 against former light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

And thanks to five straight wins, Hamill, the only deaf fighter in the UFC, is riding high on confidence going into the May 28 fight.

“I know I’m going to break his will – I know I’m going to beat Rampage,” Hamill told host Ariel Helwani on a recent edition of “The MMA Hour.” “I’ve been training real hard and my conditioning and my skills and technique, striking and kicking are a lot better.”

There’s no way Jacob Volkmann could have predicted the aftermath of his tongue-in-cheek call out of President Barack Obama after UFC 125, but the Minnesota lightweight knows one thing: he’s gonna roll with it.

Volkmann, whose post-fight interview with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani has garnered more mainstream attention than perhaps any fight interview in years, told Helwani on “The MMA Hour” Monday that he doesn’t regret his criticism of the president, even though it earned him a visit from the Secret Service. Well, mostly he has no regrets.

“I have an opinion and I have the right to say my opinion – and there’s no regrets of what I said,” Volkmann said. “The only regret I have is calling him an idiot. I don’t think he’s an idiot, but I do think he’s making a lot of mistakes.”

Josh BarnettIt took Josh Barnett a little bit to clear the cobwebs and open up, but when he did on Monday’s edition of “The MMA Hour,” he had plenty to say.

Barnett, in the studio with host Ariel Helwani for Monday’s show, touched on a host of subjects, from his current suspension by the California State Athletic Commission for a third positive test for banned substances to his upcoming participation in Strikeforce’s heavyweight tournament.

But perhaps most surprisingly, Barnett said he has considered walking away from the sport.

“The thought has crossed my mind to quit even dealing with organized mixed martial arts in general and just fight my own fights, however I feel like,” Barnett said. “The fact of the matter is, I fight because I have to – because it’s a thing that drives me, not because of anything else.”

Carlos ConditNot many fighters are as brash and out there as England’s Dan Hardy, with his punk rock hair and punkier attitude.

Most fighters Hardy gets into the cage with are bound to be his polar opposite when it comes to outward appearances, and Carlos Condit is no exception. Where Hardy’s pre-fight talk tends toward aggressive and in your face, Condit keeps things calm, almost nonchalant.

On Monday’s edition of “The MMA Hour,” that was no exception. In fact, though Condit’s fight with Hardy at UFC 120 in London on Saturday is a seven-hour time difference for him, he was still in the States – just five days from the fight. And without much concern.

Three months away from his UFC welterweight title fight against champion Georges St-Pierre, and the week before his debut as a coach on Season 12 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Josh Koscheck knows he’s the villain.

Koscheck, whose role as a fighter many fans love to hate began on the inaugural season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” has always seemed to march to his own beat. And on Tuesday, he told Ariel Helwani on “The MMA Hour” that being looked at as the bad guy doesn’t matter to him.

“Being loved or hated, ya know what? It’s about making money for me,” Koscheck said. “So if I’ve got to be the bad guy to make money, then I’ll be the bad guy to make money.”
