Matt HamillAt long last, Matt Hamill finally is getting what he has been asking for for a while – and the UFC won’t start him slowly.

Hamill (10-2, 9-2 UFC) has been asking for a Top 10 opponent, and UFC president Dana White said after his last win that he’d get one. After a series of changes, Hamill gets arguably the most important fight of his career at UFC 130 against former light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

And thanks to five straight wins, Hamill, the only deaf fighter in the UFC, is riding high on confidence going into the May 28 fight.

“I know I’m going to break his will – I know I’m going to beat Rampage,” Hamill told host Ariel Helwani on a recent edition of “The MMA Hour.” “I’ve been training real hard and my conditioning and my skills and technique, striking and kicking are a lot better.”

The UFC has once again raised its own bar. After previously announcing a pair of free preliminary card fights for UFC Fight Night 24 would be streamed live on Facebook, the company has upped the ante to five – apparently thanks to some social media pressure put on company president Dana White.

Posters on The Underground forum started an impromptu campaign asking White, via the message boards and Twitter, for more fights on Facebook. After scheduling two earlier in the week, the UFC boss came through and added three additional to the stream.

Chris WeidmanLOUISVILLE, Ky. – Despite all the superlatives that have already been hurled his way in just four pro MMA fights, despite a near-constant stream of kudos that comes from training side by side with a former champion, despite all the hype and the buzz, Chris Weidman was still surprised when the UFC called for his services.

Weidman, a Division I All-American wrestler at Hofstra who trains with former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra and Ray Longo on Long Island, was confident he’d get to The Show some day, but was realistic about it.

“I was definitely a little surprised (when the UFC called),” Weidman told MMA Fighting on Tuesday, two days before his main-card fight against Alessio Sakara at UFC on Versus 3 on Thursday. “I felt like I was always ready, but I just know how it works with MMA. You usually need a couple more fights than I have, especially to get to a main card. But I’m in it, and I’m trying to make the best of the opportunity.”

Tito OrtizTito Ortiz has pulled out of his main-event bout next month against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and will be replaced by Phil Davis.

UFC president Dana White made the announcement Saturday afternoon on his Twitter feed. Ortiz-Nogueira was scheduled to headline the UFC’s Fight Night 24 show in Seattle, the promotion’s debut in that city.

Instead, Davis (8-0, 4-0 UFC) will get his first taste of a main event, stepping in for Ortiz, the former light heavyweight champion. White’s announcement on Twitter said Ortiz needed stitches and was out of the bout. Ortiz confirmed the news in a Twitter post of his own Saturday afternoon, saying he needed 22 stitches and had suffered a concussion.
