In early-March, two talented welterweights will meet in the main event of UFC on FX 2, and attempt to reclaim their spots as top 10 fighters in the division.

Considered 170-pound champion Georges St-Pierre’s biggest threat in mid-2009, Thiago Alves lost three out of four fights, and dropped out of the top 10 welterweight rankings altogether.

At UFC 138, Alves bounced back with a submission win over Papy Abedi. The Brazilian will now hope to earn consecutive victories for the first time since October 2008, by beating Martin Kampmann.

With wins over the likes of Carlos Condit and Paulo Thiago, Kampmann was nearing contender status as he headed into a fight with Jake Shields in October 2010. However, the Xtreme Couture product then suffered back-to-back setbacks, in controversial losses to Shields and Diego Sanchez.

If he can follow up a bounce-back win over Rick Story with a victory over Alves, Kampmann would be well on his way to becoming a serious title threat.

Undoubtedly, this will be a pivotal fight for both Alves and Kampmann, so let’s see which fighter has a better chance at picking up a second straight win.

Video Roundup: Lesnar Presents Jr. Hodge Trophy, MMA Stars Talk Valentine’s Day & More

We haven’t seen or heard much from Brock Lesnar since his first round UFC 141 TKO loss to Alistair Overeem and subsequent retirement from MMA. Most of us assumed he was likely off on another possibly illegal hunting trip, or perhaps was spending day and night just getting on top of that smoking hot wife of his. In either case, the former UFC Heavyweight Champ recently popped up in Minneapolis to present Minnesota Gopher freshman wrestler Logan Storley with the 2011 Junior Hodge Trophy. Storley, who recently helped the Gophers clinch half of the Big Ten Dual Meet conference championship (along with Penn State), attended the same high school as Lesnar, who, as we all know, was a NCAA Division I Champion himself. After compiling an incredible 262-3 record, Storley was voted the nation’s best prep high school wrestler by the Amateur Athletic Union and WIN Magazine. Now start training those hands, son.

Come March 3, the UFC will make it’s anticipated return to Sydney, Australia as a welterweight collision will headline the organization’s second endeavor on the FX network.

Former contenders Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann will look to solidify their standings in a division that has sent them to the end of the pack.

Meanwhile, the inclusion of the flyweights will become evident as a four-man tournament kicks off, featuring notables Yasuhiro Urushitani, Joseph Benavidez, Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall.

With all these world class fighters on deck, many unpredictables can be afoot, but let’s take a crack at things and see just how things will shake out come next month.

UFC on FX: 3 Guarantees for Alves vs. Kampmann

As we get set for Thiago Alves vs. Martin Kampmann on March 3 in Sidney, Australia, one thing we can be certain of is some big hits in a main event featuring the top-two strikers in the UFC’s welterweight division.

Both Alves and Kampmann exhibit tremendous striking ability, with Alves having a slight edge, but Kampmann holds the advantage in takedown defense and on the ground.

Here are three guarantees for Alves vs. Kampmann.

3. Alves Will Surprise Kampmann with Some Big Shots

Let’s be clear, Kampmann knows he’s going up against a punishing striker in Alves.

But that’s not the same as experiencing Alves‘ striking ability. Eleven of Alves‘ victories have come via KO or TKO. Before Alves‘ loss to Georges-St. Pierre in July 2009, the Brazilian had won eight of his previous 10 UFC fights via KO or TKO.

On top of that, Alves got back in the win column in November when he submitted Papy Abedi in the first round. He’s gotten back on track to an extent and will be more confident in March.

2. Kampmann‘s Ground Game Will Surprise Alves

Surprise, surprise: Alves won’t be the only one doing the surprising.

Kampmann‘s ground game is overshadowed by his takedown defense, but it’s actually quite good. Six of Kampmann‘s 18 MMA victories have come via submission, and when he’s in position for the submission he rarely misses his opportunity. In fact, his submissions can be alarmingly quick.

Alves will get some big shots in, but Kampmann has the edge on the ground.

1. Alves Will Get Back to His Losing Ways

Before his victory against Abedi, Alves had lost three of his previous four fights. The truth is, he’s not equipped to beat the top welterweights in the UFC right now and I even expect to him to have trouble with Kampmann.

Alves has shown he struggles against fighters who can take him down and his ground game still isn’t good enough to beat someone like Kampmann. I expect Kampmann to find a way to get Alves on the mat and finish him there.

According to the official Web site of the UFC, welterweight contenders Thiago “Pitbull” Alves vs. Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann is going to take place at the UFC’s second event on FX.

Both of these fighters haven’t been seen in top form lately, and will be looking to climb the ladder and get back towards the top of the division once again.

Alves will be coming in having gone 2-3 in his last five fights, including decision losses to Georges St-Pierre, Jon Fitch and Rick Story, and victories over John Howard and Papy Abedi.

Kampmann will be coming in having recently broken a two-fight losing streak, both of which were controversial decision losses, one to Jake Shields and one to Diego Sanchez. However, in his last fight, he won a unanimous decision over Story to get back on track.

This is a potential Fight of the Night candidate, as both fighters bring some great striking into the match.

UFC on FX 2 will likely take place on March 4, and will go down on FX, in Sydney, Australia.

No other fights are currently announced for this card.
