A UFC light heavyweight clash between Thiago Santos and Magomed Ankalaev has been targeted to headline a March UFC Fight Night.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto was among the first to report the Santos/Ankalaev matchup that is in the works for March 12. Both men are looking to get back in the light heavyweight title picture as Glover Teixeira will more than likely defend his belt against Jiri Prochazka next.

Santos is coming off arguably a less-than-thrilling win over Johnny Walker in October. He earned the unanimous decision win despite the fight being a bit lackadaisical in terms of volume, especially in the later rounds. Santos snapped a three-fight losing streak to Glover Teixeira, Jon Jones, and Aleksandar Rakic.

Ankalaev is one of the hottest light heavyweight prospects in recent years and is coming off of his dominant win over Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 267. He’s won seven fights in a row against the likes of Ion Cutelaba and Nikita Krylov and will finally get his main event opportunity against Santos.

Thiago Santos and Magomed Ankalaev Are Both In The Running For A Shot at The Title

Santos and Ankalaev promise fireworks in the Octagon. Both like to push forward and push the pace on their opponents, a matchup that will certainly entice fans of the light heavyweight division.

An impressive performance by either man could result in potentially earning the next title shot at 205 pounds. Santos has fought for the belt once, while Ankalaev is still awaiting a chance at UFC gold.

In his last win over Walker, Santos made it clear that he wants another shot at the belt sooner rather than later. A win over an impressive prospect like Ankalaev could give him the opportunity to do so.

What is your early prediction for the rumored Thiago Santos vs. Magomed Ankalaev fight?

Despite Thiago Santos’ latest offering, Ji?í Procházka is busy serving as the backup fighter in the main event at UFC 267: B?achowicz vs. Teixeira.

Both combatants in the UFC 267 main event have a history with “Marreta”. Over last weekend, fans witnessed Santos dig his heels in the ground and defend his position as the #5-ranked light heavyweight.

After taking Johnny Walker to task in a unanimous decision victory, the 37-year-old appears to be back on track after snapping a three-fight losing streak. Previously, Santos was paired with Jan Blachowicz and finished the Poland native en route to his title bid with the former divisional kingpin Jon Jones. After losing and sustaining damage to his knees, Santos returned to face Glover Teixeira. Initially, Santos found success while striking but folded in round three under the pressure of Teixeira’s pace.

While Santos thought Ji?í Procházka would be an ideal opponent next, “Denisa” explained that he is already the backup fighter for the 205-pound title fight this October.

@TMarretaMMA Thank you for the offer, but right now i’m preparing for Blachowicz or Teixeira, which you know them very well.” Procházka posted.

Procházka, meanwhile, exploded in the UFC following his debut knockout against former title challenger Volkan Oezdemir. With a flair for style and wildly aggressive technique, the 29-year-old demolished another former title contender when he was paired with Dominick Reyes. It took only two rounds for Procházka to flatline Reyes with a spinning back elbow.

With a 12-fight winning streak above his head, surely Santos is eager to steal the hype of a fellow striker who is currently the talk of the town. After Procházka fulfills his duties as a potential replacement for the Teixeira/Blachowicz title bout, Santos might become the odd-man-out if the UFC decides to pivot in the direction of Prochazka fighting for gold next.

Do you think Thiago Santos can knock out Ji?í Procházka?

One-time UFC light heavyweight title challenger, the #5 ranked, Thiago ‘Marreta’ Santos has brought a halt to his disappointing three-fight losing skid, with a rather forgettable unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 48-47) win over compatriot, Johnny Walker.

In a rather hesitant performance from both contenders, in a main event bout which promised fireworks on paper, at least, Santos managed to snap his three-fight losing skid — narrowly edging out Straight Blast Gym mover, Walker over the course of five rounds.

With both content to attempt to counter one another over the course of the 25-minute main event, the headlining bout left very little to write home about, with Santos landing impactful left body kicks on occasion as Walker circled and defended.

In arguably the biggest moment of the night, Santos managed to uncork a massive overhand left, which appeared to land, somewhat clean, at least on Walker, who beckoned him to walk forward — a request which was left unanswered.

Below, catch the highlights from Santos’ win over Walker at UFC Vegas 38.

Thiago Santos vs. Johnny Walker was not what everyone had hoped to see.

The showdown served as the main event of the UFC Vegas 38 event on Saturday night (, 2021) from Las Vegas, Nevada at the UFC Apex facility.

As seen in the fight, the first round was skippable and that’s putting it lightly. There was little to no action aside from a few leg kicks. Moving along to the second round, Santos went for a takedown, but Walker stuffed it and they landed shots when getting up. Through the third round, Walker started to get more loose with his strikes, but wasn’t throwing in volume. Santos was out landing him. Walker had the advantage in the fourth round. They continued to strike in the fifth round. Santos cracked him with a big right hand. A very close fight due to lack of output. The judges gave the win to Santos by decision.

This was an important contest for both guys. Santos had dropped four straight losses before this fight. Santo dropped a split decision loss to then-UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones at the UFC 239 pay-per-view event in July 201, Glover Teixeira via submission in November 2020 and then a decision defeat to Aleksandar Raki? at UFC 259. On the flip side, Walker dropped a decision loss to Nikita Krylov in March 2020, but rebounded with a KO win over Ryan Spann in September 2020 heading into the fight.

Let’s see how the fighters reacted to the outcome of this fight:
