Chael Sonnen hilariously responds to Tito Ortiz’s claims of a retirement fight scheduled for February between the two fighters.

Ortiz went on the “Adam Carolla Show” and claimed that Sonnen and himself would be facing off once again inside the cage. Ortiz most recently was knocked out by Anderson Silva in a boxing match last September. The match only lasted a round, as Silva was able to starch Ortiz quickly.

Ortiz is lobbying for one more mixed martial arts bout, then he would leave the combat sports world for good. Ortiz claims he will be fighting Sonnen on the “Freedom Fight Night” card, which is designed to raise money for the Republican Party.

Chael Sonnen tweeted out a response to Ortiz’s claims

“Tito, when you text from your Pay-As-You-Go 7–11 cel phone your message loses a bit of potency.” Sonnen tweeted. “If you’re good at playing a character, they will pay you. If you’re great at playing a character, you will pay them. Marks are going to Mark.”

This would be the second fight between Ortiz and Sonnen, if it truly does happen. In the first bout, Ortiz was able to submit Sonnen in the first round with a rear-naked choke. The match was fought under the Bellator promotion. Ortiz has won five of his last six fights and is even on a three fight win streak. During his win streak he has beaten Sonnen, Chuck Liddell, and former WWE superstar Alberto Del Rio. Ortiz has not had a professional MMA fight since 2019.

Sonnen on the other hand has dropped four of his last six fights and the 45 year old hasn’t fought since 2019 as well. He dropped his last fight against Lyoto Machida, while being TKO’d by a flying knee.

‘The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’ Tito Ortiz may be facing the bad boy Chael Sonnen in a rematch for his final MMA fight. Ortiz made these claims while speaking on The Adam Carolla Show. He said:

“I’ll be competing one last time in the beginning of February. Tito Ortiz vs Chael Sonnen number two will be happening for Freedom Fight Night. I’m excited. It’ll be in mixed martial arts, not boxing, and at 205lbs.” [Transcript credit: Heavy]

This announcement seems to have emerged out of nowhere. Chael Sonnen is officially retired which adds even more questions to Ortiz’s claim. The former UFC champion had previously called out Sonnen in 2022 on Twitter but got no response from the US-born athlete.

In August of this year, Ortiz attempted to bait Sonnen, saying:

“@ChaelSonnen don’t be scared homie. Now you have a chance to keep the promise to your dad. #Ortizvscheal2.”

Tito Ortiz and Chael Sonnen had previously fought in early 2017 under the Bellator MMA banner with Ortiz earning a first-round submission. Since then, the former UFC titleholder has earned wins against Chuck Liddell and Alberto Del Rio, before suffering a knockout loss in boxing to Anderson Silva.

Chael Sonnen claimed victories over ‘Rampage’ Quinton Jackson and Wanderlei Silva, before losing twice in a row to Fedor Emelianenko and Lyoto Machida, and then calling it a career. He has not actively competed in MMA since 2019.

Chael Sonnen vs. Tito Ortiz II?

Combined Chael Sonnen and Tito Ortiz are 92 years old. Since 2020, the two men have a combined combat sports record of 0-1. Neither has been particularly active over the past few years. Fans are in wide agreement that they are both well out of their prime fighting years. While Ortiz is interested in one last match, the audience may be less than interested in this one.

Tito Ortiz has been keeping busy as the Mayor pro tempore of Huntington Beach, California. Due to controversies, he stepped down after just six months in the position.

Chael Sonnen was the founder of Submission Underground (SUG) which is a submission grappling organization. Earlier this year, Sonnen was arrested in Las Vegas. Sports Illustrated writes, “In the complaint, Sonnen is described to have hurt five different men in variations of punching, kneeing, striking and kicking.”

After Tito Ortiz‘s brief and fairly disastrous career in politics, the former UFC light heavyweight champion is giving the music industry a try.

Ortiz, a UFC Hall of Famer, will appear in the mildly-anticipated music video for rising county music star Josh Scott’s newest single, Redneck Enough to be Dangerous. The full music video will be released on October 14th, but thanks to @FullContactMTWF on Twitter, you can get a brief glimpse of the lyrically dense material below:

Sure enough, users on Twitter have been blasting Ortiz’s participation in the video with one Twitter user saying, “When you have to fill out a 500 word essay but only have 15 words in your brain. That’s this song. Also Tito looks like the guy who just got to the bar and is just now coming off his PCP binge trying to make sure his emotions are authentic reality.” Harsh, but fair.

Tito Ortiz Isn’t Doing Himself Any Favor Since His Brief Political Career

Once a respected combat sports superstar and one of the hottest selling acts in the business, Tito Ortiz has fallen from grace, particularly after his poorly received foray into politics. In 2020, Ortiz ran for a city council seat in his hometown of Huntington Beach, CA. Elected to an open seat on November 5th, 2020, it took the ‘Huntington Beach Bad Boy’ less than a month in office to orchestrate and lead a protest against COVID-19 regulations.

Six months later it was revealed that Ortiz had filed for unemployment in the state despite not being unemployed. He resigned from the position one month later. With his political career over less than a year from when it began, Tito Ortiz appears to have found a new job, randomly appearing in low-budget country music videos on the internet.
