Tom Aspinall

Tom Aspinall is more than happy being himself rather than playing a WWE like character in order to promote himself, like Chael Sonnen has suggested.

Aspinall is the sixth ranked heavyweight in the organization, and is one of the most recognized up and coming fighters in the UFC. Aspinall has his biggest test ahead of him July 23rd, as he takes on one of the most dangerous fighters in the division, Curtis Blaydes.

Sonnen said ahead of this fight against Blaydes, that Aspinall needed to promote himself more as a fighter to get more eyes on him. He called Aspinall to sweet of a person and is too much of a fan of the sport to headline a major card.

“I can’t put him back in a main event,” Sonnen said. “I can’t put him in a title shot. I can’t put him in anything that he says he doesn’t belong in. Nobody can.” (Transcribed by Bloodyelbow)

Tom Aspinall answered Chael Sonnen in his latest interview with Ariel Helwani

“I never thought that I was going to be talking about a title after five UFC fights, six UFC fights. I feel like I’ve got more work to do. I’ve got a lot more work to do, more proving. I don’t want to be one of these people who gets here by talking. That is not me.” Aspinall said on The MMA Hour

Aspinall claimed that he would rather let his fighting do the talk for him, rather than continuously talking and calling people out. Aspinall’s approach going forward will be to continue being himself and a genuine person, rather than put on a persona like other fighters and WWE superstars.

“I’m more than happy being myself thanks and not selling myself out and acting like a [clown] for views and money,” wrote Aspinall on Instagram Stories. “I am not a WWE entertainer I’m one of the greatest heavyweights to walk on this [Earth] and it will be shown in my body of work from my UFC debut until I retire in 10 years. I don’t need to talk s—t. Happy to be myself.”

Aspinall Hits Back At Sonnen’s Promo Criticism: “I Don’t Need To Talk S**t”

UFC heavyweight contender Tom Aspinall doesn’t have ambitions to be a top-level UFC promoter like Chael Sonnen. Aspinall is set to face Curtis Blaydes in a potential No. 1 contender fight on July 23. UFC heavyweight contender Tom Aspinall doesn’t have ambitions to be a top-level UFC promoter like Chael Sonnen.

Aspinall is set to face Curtis Blaydes in a potential No. 1 contender fight on July 23. He’s won eight in a row, including most recently over heavyweights such as Alexander Volkov and Sergey Spivak.

While Aspinall is arguably one of the most impressive heavyweights in the UFC, he’s not known to push the envelope on the mic. He’s usually complimentary of his opponents, which Sonnen feels is a detriment.

During a recent segment on his YouTube channel, Sonnen criticized Aspinall for not promoting himself out of the cage.

“He comes out and does an interview — I can’t remember what was said, I was disgusted, I ended up shutting the page — talking about, ‘Who wouldn’t want to see Ngannou box? Ngannou’s just a great boxer,’” Sonnen said of Aspinall. “He went on from there, put some other people over. He’s a legitimate fan. I do understand that in all fairness and he does come off as a very sweet guy, that is true. Tom actually is coming off like a really nice guy, I must tell the other side of the coin.

“I can’t put him back in a main event. I can’t put him in a title shot. I can’t put him in anything that he says he doesn’t belong in. Nobody can.” (h/t MMA Fighting)

Sonnen, a well-known WWE fan, used a WWE style to become one of the most talked-about fighters in the UFC during his career. He had his way when it came to mental warfare leading up to fights against Anderson Silva, Wanderlei Silva, and others.

After getting word of Sonnen’s comments, Aspinall hit back in a post on his Instagram story.

“I’m more than happy being myself thanks and not selling myself out and acting like a [clown] for views and money,” Aspinall replied. “I am not a WWE entertainer I’m one of the greatest heavyweights to walk on this [Earth] and it will be shown in my body of work from my UFC debut until I retire in 10 years. I don’t need to talk shit. Happy to be myself.”

Aspinall, unlike some of his UK colleagues such as Paddy Pimblett and former middleweight champion Michael Bisping, isn’t interested in becoming a potential heel in the fight game. He’s looking to continue his path towards a heavyweight title and a win over Blaydes will put him in a great position for a shot at the belt.

Sonnen On Aspinall’s ‘Humble’ Media Approach: ‘He’s Like A 13-Year-Old’

Former UFC star Chael Sonnen is not a fan of heavyweight contender Tom Aspinall’s humble nature in interviews and media appearances.

Aspinall has been on fire since arriving in the Octagon two years ago. In just five outings, the former Cage Warriors fighter has risen towards the top of the weight class with a perfect promotional record, which includes victories over former champion Andrei Arlovski and then-ranked heavyweight Sergey Spivak, as well as a triumphant main event debut on home soil versus Alexander Volkov.

With those wins and a place at #6 on the ladder, most would expect the Englishman to be making some noise when it comes to title contention or, with the current scenario in the division, the interim championship picture.

In Aspinall’s case, it’s quite the opposite. Having previously maintained a desire to rise the ranks slowly prior to UFC London earlier this year, the Manchester native has kept hold of that mindset as he closes in on the top five, even suggesting that he doesn’t yet deserve a shot at gold.

For Chael Sonnen, that approach is crazy.

In a video uploaded to his YouTube channel, Sonnen discussed the young heavyweight’s recent comments, suggesting a level of humility like that has no place in interviews, especially for a fighter at the top of the sport.

“Aspinall does interviews like a 13-year-old fan,” said Sonnen. “Aspinall cuts an interview that he should not receive a title shot. Somebody else should, he’s not ready for it. All right, we got a young guy who wants to show a sense of humility, who never should have done an interview that said that. But everybody’s gotta have a mistake before they can make a correction.”

Having successfully headlined UFC London in March this year, Aspinall is set to return to The O2 on July 23 for the second edition of the promotion’s 2022 exploits in England’s capital. In the main event, the 29-year-old will share the Octagon with top contender Curtis Blaydes, with the victor potentially in line for a shot at gold soon enough.

But Sonnen is seemingly not looking forward to Aspinall’s pre and post-fight media obligations, even going as far as to say he’d do the interviews for the Englishman if he had the free time.

“If I had time and he hadn’t pissed me off so bad, I would offer, ‘Don’t ever say anything else, every interview and press conference that you go to, I will show up with a bullhorn and make a whole big scene of it. You stand there and don’t say anything, I will have you fighting for the belt within 12 months.’ That’s the plan anyway, that you’re getting in the way of!” (h/t Sportskeeda MMA)

Perhaps with a victory over another established name like Blaydes, especially given the American’s place in the division and win against Chris Daukaus earlier this year, will bring out a more ruthless and demanding iteration of Aspinall.

For Sonnen’s sanity and blood pressure, we sure hope so…

Dana White States A Win Over Curtis Blaydes Could Place Tom Aspinall In “Top 3 Of The World”

UFC president Dana White admits that should rising heavyweight, Tom Aspinall, get passed Curtis Blaydes it could land him in the UFC heavyweight ranking’s top threes.

It was recently announced that the UFC would be making a return to the UK in July following the success of the promotion’s first event on British soil since the pandemic. Much like last time, the show will be headlined by heavyweight sensation, Tom Aspinall.

In March of this year, Aspinall made quick work of the towering Alexander Volkov, forcing the former Bellator heavyweight champion to tap in the first round, much to the delight of charged London crowd.

This time, however, Aspinal will stand opposite former collegiate wrestler, Curtis ‘Razor’ Blaydes. The American possesses big wins over some UFC heavyweight division elite, defeating the likes of Mark Hunt, Alistair Overeem, Junior dos Santos, and Aleksei Oleinik.

Ahead of the July 23 event, talking to BT Sports Dana White discussed what victory could mean for Aspinall.

Yeah, the guy’s [Aspinall] got a 100% finish rate,” White began. “He’s ranked number six in the world, now he’s gonna headline in his home country, what’s better than that”

“This is a big one for him, man. If he can beat Blaydes, breaks in, possibly to the top three in the world, it’s a big deal.”

White would also add that a newly extended broadcasting partnership with the UFC and BT Sport could play a significant role in growing the sport and help produce more talent such as Aspinall.

“There’s tons of great talent coming out of the UK now,” White said. “I think that now with the pandemic being over, us coming over with live events and this new BT deal it’s only gonna make the sport bigger and create more and more incredible talent from that part of the world.”

Dana White and The UFC’s Deal with BT Sport

It was recently announced that the UFC and BT had extended a deal that gave exclusive coverage of the UFC for the United Kingdom and Ireland.

“The fans from the UK and Ireland love this sport and they have always been great to us.” White said “And now, our roster of talent from these countries is the strongest it’s ever been.

“We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with BT Sport to keep promoting these athletes, building stars, and broadcasting the best combat sports events on the planet to these incredible fans.”

How often do you think Dana White should bring the UFC to the UK?

UFC heavyweights Alexander Volkov and Jairzinho Rozenstruik will clash at UFC Vegas 56. Both fighters are looking to rebound from losing their last fight.

Volkov hopes to climb back into the top five of the UFC Heavyweight rankings with a win this Saturday. He lost his last fight to Tom Aspinall by submission at UFC London on Mar. 19. The loss pushed Volkov down the rankings from sixth to seventh. A win over Rozenstruik would keep him at his current rank, but it could also lead to fighting someone in the top five next.

Rozenstruik is looking to get on a winning streak with a win over Volkov. Since his knockout loss to current UFC Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou at UFC 249, he’s won two out of his last four fights. His most recent loss was against Curtis Blaydes by unanimous decision at UFC 266. An impressive win over Volkov would move him up the rankings and closer to re-entering title contention.
