The 155lb title fight was supposed to go down at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on April 18. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic wrecked those plans as the state introduced a ban on all mass gatherings.
UFC president Dana White vowed to press on with the event at all costs and has been weighing up various countries, cities, and venues to host the event.
Nurmagomedov, however, announced earlier today he is unlikely to compete on the card due to an ongoing travel ban in his homeland Russia which he returned to last week.
Speaking on Instagram live
he said. “Currently,
I am in Dagestan and I am training and preparing every day, although I don’t
know what am I preparing for. Because after we came to Russia we also learned
that the borders are going to be locked. Same like in the States, same like in
Europe, Emirates, everywhere. The whole world is in quarantine right now.”
“So now I am hearing that they are looking to
organize it with or without me…I am even hearing that they are looking for an
opponent for Tony, because he is in the States and I am here in Russia.”
Ferguson has apparently heard the news of Nurmagomedov’s potential withdrawal from the fight and jumped straight on social media to call him out about it. The 36-year-old told his long-time rival no travel ban would stop the fight and he shouldn’t use it as an excuse to back out of UFC 249.

Undefeated champion Nurmagomedov appeared on Instagram live on Monday morning to explain his current situation. The 31-year-old is currently stuck in Russia which is in full lockdown and believes UFC 249 will go ahead without him.
“We were training at AKA without any
information regarding the fight, where and how is it going to happen. Then the
UFC told us that the fight 100% isn’t happening in the States. And they said
that 99% that it will happen in (United Arab) Emirates, Abu Dhabi.
“After
talking to the UFC we decided to fly over to the Emirates a month before the
fight. I don’t remember the exact date, it was 19th or 20th, I’ll have to
check. But when we landed in Emirates we learned that they are going to close
(the) borders and no one will be able to leave or fly in, with (the) exception
of residents.
“So, we
had to fly back to Russia. Currently, I am in Dagestan and I am training and
preparing every day, although I don’t know what am I preparing for. Because
after we came to Russia we also learned that the borders are going to be
locked. Same like in the States, same like in Europe, Emirates, everywhere. The
whole world is in quarantine right now.”
“So now
I am hearing that they are looking to organize it with or without me. OK, go
ahead,” he said. “Everyone should follow the laws. I am not against it, I know
that fighters need to feed their families and pay their bills. I know how hard
it is for the fighter. Unless they fight they aren’t getting any money.
“I am
even hearing that they are looking for an opponent for Tony, because he is in
the States and I am here in Russia. But I am here not on my own will. The UFC
told me that this fight 100% isn’t happening in the USA, and even if it’s not
happening in the Emirates it will happen on this side of Atlantic. We discussed
everything with the UFC. By that time I already spent five weeks of hard
training at AKA.
“Now I don’t really know what’s going on. It’s really hard to train and cut your weight when the whole world is locked down and you don’t know what you are preparing for. But it’s not the first time I face obstacles in my career.” (Translation by RT)

Daniel Cormier expects Khabib Nurmagomedov to provide plenty of problems for Tony Ferguson in their lightweight title fight.
Despite the current coronavirus pandemic, both fighters are expected to face each other at UFC 249 on April 18. Cormier was on hand to see Nurmagomedov’s preparation in training camp and claims “The Eagle” was training hard and remains as focused as ever.
And while he is naturally biased towards his teammate, Cormier does give credit to Ferguson and his body of work throughout the last few years. That said, he believes there are holes that Nurmagomedov can exploit:
“I’ve seen Tony Ferguson be so spectacular throughout the course of his career but I’ve also seen Tony at times struggle with the exact kind of game Khabib brings,” Cormier told MMA Fighting. “The Kevin Lee fight — Kevin Lee was able to implement a really good game plan early in that fight but he got tired. Then Tony was able to take advantage of a mistake he made. I watched Abel Trujillo take Tony down and control him.
“Those types of guys, and granted that was a while ago, and Tony has improved vastly, those types of guys are able to do that and those guys are not on the level of Khabib Nurmagomedov.”
So far, no fighter has been able to stop Nurmagomedov’s relentless pressure and wrestling. And despite many observers believing Ferguson is a bad matchup for the champion, Cormier believes he will struggle against Nurmagomedov.
“His [Nurmagomedov] top control is smothering,” Cormier added. “His control. His understanding of grappling and grappling positions. It’s a new level. I don’t know how else to say it. The guy is just a beast.
“I think he’s going to provide a lot of problems for Tony. Honestly, he’s much better standing that people want to give him credit for it.”
More than anything, Cormier believes the fact that everybody knows what Nurmagomedov is going to do and still can’t stop him is what makes him so dominant and special as a fighter.
“How good do you have to be that everyone you fight knows exactly what you’re gonna do,” Cormier said. “It’s no secret what Khabib is going to you and he’s still going to implement that game plan to a T. That tells you the level of what this guy is. You know what’s coming.
“My man Dustin Poirier trained for it. He knew but the moment Khabib grabbed him it was probably like ‘I’ve trained with guys before but they didn’t feel like this guy’. I just believe he’s so good at what he does, he doesn’t even have to hide it.”
