Tony Ferguson has opened as a betting favorite over Justin Gaethje.
According to reports, a fight with Gaethje has been offered to Ferguson by the UFC following the news that Khabib Nurmagomedov will be stuck in Russia and unlikely to compete against him at UFC 249 on April 18.
While a Ferguson vs. Gaethje fight is undoubtedly one of the best and most exciting matchups in the stacked lightweight division, it is still underwhelming given how many were hoping this would finally be the year we see “El Cucuy” battle Nurmagomedov.
Regardless, if it happens, oddsmakers see Ferguson extending his 12-fight winning streak as he is a -170 favorite. Gaethje — winner of his last three fights via first-round knockout — is a +145 underdog, meanwhile.
That means you would have to bet $170 on Ferguson to win $100 while a $100 stake on Gaethje would earn you profits of $145.
Whether the fight takes place remains to be seen. For one, Ferguson has to accept it. Secondly, Gaethje has to accept it as well having notably turned down a short-notice fight with the former interim champion last year.
If Ferguson is willing to fight, however, he has no shortage of options elsewhere. The likes of Dustin Poirier and former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley have also offered to step in and face him to save UFC 249.
We’ll just have to see how things develop in the coming hours or days.

Dustin Poirier is willing to face Tony Ferguson on short notice.
Ferguson was expected to challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title at UFC 249 on April 18. However, with Nurmagomedov in Russia and the country banning cross-border travel as of this week, “The Eagle” is stuck in his home country and will likely not be able to compete.
The UFC has made alternate plans as they have reportedly offered Ferguson a fight with top contender Justin Gaethje. Whether it happens remains to be seen on both sides, especially with Gaethje having turned down a short-notice fight with Ferguson in the past.
One fighter ready to compete on short notice, however, is Poirier who took to Twitter on Monday to offer his services. He even claims to have reached out to the UFC as well:
Poirier last competed in September when he suffered a third-round submission defeat to Nurmagomedov in their title fight at UFC 242. “The Diamond” was initially expected to have his comeback fight against Dan Hooker at UFC San Diego in May.
Perhaps Poirier will be able to catch a bigger fish in Ferguson.

With the news of Khabib Nurmagomedov being stuck in Russia, his lightweight title fight with Tony Ferguson on April 18 is likely to be canceled. Justin Gaethje has been offered to Ferguson but it remains to be seen if that’s the fight that will go ahead as of now.
Jorge Masvidal recently offered to step up and save the card by facing Kamaru Usman. And now Woodley is doing the same.
“The Chosen One” took to Twitter where he claimed he would be willing to face either Colby Covington or Ferguson in the UFC 249 headliner.
“@ufc Me vs Qweefington April 18th unless Tony wanna roll back up to his Ultimate Fighter weight for the bag. WW bout won’t take no cheese out his LW macaroni.”
Woodley and Covington looked set to be the fight to replace and headline the recently-canceled UFC London card earlier this month. However, it never came to fruition.
Could it happen on April 18? It appears unlikely but “Chaos” is receptive to the idea.
