John Kavanagh’s tweet about Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson less than two weeks ago has ended up backfiring — for now.

Following the heated press conference between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson for their April 18 fight at UFC 249, Kavanagh had this to say:

“The only thing that could stop this fight would be some sort of pandemic virus spiralling out of control and that’ll never happen.”

Given that the fight previously failed to come to fruition four times, Kavanagh seemed to be testing fate. And with the coronavirus outbreak right now, the fight appears to be in serious jeopardy once again.

Of course, at the time of the tweet, the coronavirus was still a major issue. However, it wasn’t classified as a pandemic at the time nor were sports leagues around the world suspended.

And so, Kavanagh tweeted Monday after seemingly jinxing the fight:

“Me and my stupid mouth ?”

While the UFC have indefinitely postponed its next three events, Dana White has maintained that Nuramgomedov vs. Ferguson will still happen next month and will likely take place outside the United States. So maybe all is not lost as of yet.

Do you think we’ll still see Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson?

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the father of Khabib Nurmagomedov, believes UFC 249 will happen on April 18 and knows the perfect location for it.

Nurmagomedov is expected to defend his lightweight title against Tony Ferguson on that date. Yet, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the UFC postponing the next three events, the status of UFC 249 is very much in the air. Dana White said the event would most likely not take place in the United States, so for Abdulmanap, he hopes it takes place in Dubai.

“Most likely it will be Dubai,” Abdulmanap said to RBC Sports in Russia (via MMA Fighting). “Firstly, it’s easier to fight diseases because of the heat. And I think the Emirates will pay for the UFC fight faster and easier. Abu Dhabi may well be, but then, [that’s up to] Dana White. I can’t approve, but there are more chances there.”

The UFC did sign a five-year deal to have one UFC event with a title on the line in Abu Dhabi every year. So, April could very well be the time they go to Abu Dhabi or Dubai for the event.

Even if they go there, the chances of fans being allowed to attend is uncertain. Yet, for the Nurmagomedov’s they don’t care if the event has fans or not.

“Khabib feels great, everything is going according to plan,” Abdulmanap said. “He is not afraid of the coronavirus, we are all mortals. What about empty stands? I think that the audience is good, but without them it is even better.”

Regardless, Dana White has made it clear he will go to extreme lengths to make this fight happen as it is one the world wants to see. Where it will take place is the big question mark right now.

Do you think UFC 249 will take place in Dubai as Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov suggests?

Tony Ferguson is pressing on with his preparations for
UFC 249 amid the CVOD-19 pandemic currently sweeping the globe.

The former interim champion is scheduled to face lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 249 in Brooklyn on April 18.

Due to the ongoing crisis, many fans fear the bout will be scrapped for a fifth time, despite UFC president Dana White promising the fight will go ahead at all costs. Speaking to ESPN after announcing the postponement of shows in London, Columbus, and Portland, he said.

“We have no
choice now but to postpone these fights. So, we’re postponing the next three
events, but Tony Ferguson versus Khabib, April 18, is still on and that will
still happen.”

‘El Cucuy’ clearly has faith in his boss and is still going all out in training for this upcoming fight. He has even posted one of his patented bizarre workout routines on social media.

In the clip, Ferguson can be seen in jeans and a t-shirt wrestling with some type of box. Despite his attire, the number one lightweight contender is clearly going all-out – check out the video below.

The strange video got the attention of MMA fans and even his future opponent Nurmagomedov who questioned his choice of attire. “Training with belt and jeans?, he said on Instagram via ESPN.

UFC president Dana White is not giving up on Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson.

Despite the promotion’s plans for their upcoming events to go ahead, the UFC had to indefinitely postpone its next three events on Monday due to the coronavirus outbreak.

That didn’t include UFC 249, though, which is scheduled to take place April 18 in Brooklyn, New York. Headlining that card is the highly-anticipated lightweight title fight between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson.

And somehow, some way, White plans for it to still go ahead:

“Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib, April 18, is still on and will still happen,” White told ESPN. “We’re going to follow these guidelines to not have more than 10 people in a row. We’re hoping that this all clears up by April.

“This fight’s going to happen. No crowd. Whatever it takes. Probably not even going to happen in the United States but this fight’s going to happen.”

Hopefully, things clear up by that time as combat sports fans have been waiting to see Nurmagomedov and Ferguson collide for more than a few years now.

For now, it looks like MMA fans will have to go at least a month without any fights.

What do you make of White’s comments? Do you think we’ll finally see Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson next month?
