Title contenders such as Tony Ferguson, Kevin Lee, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Justin Gaethje are making the division a little chippy as they are all jockeying for position one way or another.

In regards to Ferguson, his quickest chance to lock down a bout with McGregor is to defeat Lee at UFC 216 later this month at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and claim the interim lightweight title. On the flip side, Gaethje’s quickest opportunity to earn a title shot is to defeat former champion Eddie Alvarez at UFC 218 in December then call for a #1 contender’s bout.

Recently, Ferguson and Gaethje had some heated words on social media despite the fact that they are currently on different paths towards UFC gold. A simple poll is what kicked off the shots being exchanged. Gaethje referenced the ankle pick threat “El Cucuy” threw Fabricio Werdum’s way during a UFC 216 media lunch altercation.

This was when Ferguson wasted little time responding and offering his own smack talk.

Fight fans love bad blood between fighters, and we just got it. Their efforts to grab the spotlight are sure to ramp up now that the UFC lightweight champion is back in town. Just like McGregor, Ferguson and Gaethje are two confident alpha males who have produced as of the late inside of the Octagon.

Despite that fact that we are in the entertainment era of the UFC, at the end of the day, winning fights and performing well will always outweigh trash talking. Doing trash talk only builds the intrigue fight fans will have for Ferguson’s upcoming battle with Lee at UFC 216 as well as Gaethje’s Fight of the Night favorite against Alvarez in December.

Khabib Nurmagomedov has yet to step back inside the world-famous Octagon following his big win over Michael Johnson at UFC 205 in November 2016. We have now found that originally, he was scheduled to return to the cage at UFC 217. However, things did not turn out the way that they were supposed to and plans were scrapped.

UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby revealed in a recent interview that Khabib was offered a fight against fellow top contender Tony Ferguson at the event, but talks were unsuccessful.

“Just to clear things up, a fight was offered to Nurmagomedov on Nov. 4th, and at that point, we were trying to put cards together towards the end of the year,” Shelby said on Watch List (via Bloody Elbow). “I was informed that he could not make that date and he probably wouldn’t be able to fight until at least December. And so, that left Tony without a dance partner and it’s not just about one guy, it’s about two guys.”

This was when UFC decided to instead book Ferguson to headline UFC 216 against Kevin Lee for the interim lightweight title.

“So we backed Tony up, and Kevin Lee was there, and I mean look at his resume as of late,” Shelby explained. “He’s a phenomenal fighter, he’s doing fantastic. Right now, I think he’s the hottest thing in the division.”

If you recall, the two were supposed to fight for the interim title at UFC 209. However, the supposed co-main event bout was scrapped when Khabib pulled out due to health issues stemming from his weight cut.

UFC 217 is set to take place on Saturday, November 4th in New York at Madison Square Garden. Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre for the UFC middleweight title is expected to serve as the main event. Cody Garbrandt vs. T.J. Dillashaw for the UFC bantamweight title is expected to serve as the co-main event.

The hype off of UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor’s unsuccessful professional boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather Jr. is beginning to die down, and mixed martial arts (MMA) fans are ready to see “The Notorious One” return to the Octagon.

Currently, an interim 155-pound championship bout has been put in place to determine who will (likely) challenge the Irishman upon his return to unify the lightweight belts. McGregor held a Q&A event earlier today (Fri. September 29, 2017) in Glasgow, and answered a variety of questions pertaining to his fighting future.

When asked about the possibility of a rematch with Mayweather inside the boxing ring, McGregor believes it’s very possible and wouldn’t be surprised if he got a call from “Money” to fight again due to his rumored tax issues:

As it pertains to the original match-up, McGregor believes fighting Mayweather could have potentially been the easiest fight of his career had he prepared for the bout differently:

After, unquestionably, the biggest payday of his career from his August 26th meeting with Mayweather, the Irish knockout artist says he’s still counting his money from the event:

In regards to MMA competition, McGregor says he’d be more than willing to fight on the UFC’s December 30th pay-per-view (PPV) card, but the only way he’d be up for it is if he only needs to show up for the weigh-ins and the fight – not seeming too willing to participate in the usual press conferences he’s famous for:

McGregor then touched on a rival he made during his preparation for his fight against Mayweather – Paulie Malignaggi, who served as one of McGregor’s sparring partners for some time before the ex-two-weight boxing champ departed due to some unfavorable pictures and videos of him from their sparring sessions leaked out. McGregor challenged Malignaggi to meet him inside the Octagon to settle their differences:

Lastly, McGregor acknowledged next month’s (incorrectly assuming it’s this weekend) interim title bout between Ferguson and Lee and claimed he’d make a decision on his fighting future after the match-up takes place (quote via MMA Junkie):

“Let me see what these two fools do this weekend,” McGregor said.
