To the surprise of nobody, Tony Ferguson and Lando Vannata earned “Fight of the Night” honors at UFC Fight Night 91 Wednesday from Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The event marked the first-ever trip to the state for the Octagon, as the main card and most of the prelims aired live on FOX Sports 1.

Ferguson, the No. 3 ranked lightweight in the UFC, survived an early first round attack by Vannata to earn a second round submission win via D’arce choke. The two each earned $50,000 for their efforts.

Picking up $50,000 each were John Lineker and Louis Smolka, who claimed “Performance of the Night” bonuses.

Tony Ferguson (21-3) was originally set to headline UFC Fight Night 91 with Michael Chiesa. With Chiesa injured, “El Cucuy” settled for a co-main event spot against Lando Vannata (8-1).

Ferguson was in dire straits in the first round, but he gathered himself and finished his bout in typical fashion.

Vannata landed a couple of leg kicks. He caught a kick from Ferguson and threw a straight right hand. Time was called as Ferguson was caught low with a kick. “Groovy” ducked a spinning back elbow and briefly held on to a body lock. Vannata was popped with a jab and then a one-two combination. A push kick connected for Vannata, but he was popped with a right cross. Ferguson got rocked with a head kick and Vannata tried to follow up. “El Cucuy” went for an armbar at the end of the round, but Vannata stood in top control to end the round.

Ferguson opened the second round with a jab. “Groovy” went for a spinning wheel kick. “El Cucuy” kept finding a home for his jab. Ferguson kept popping his opponent with shots. Lannata kept his hands down to try to get his opponent to make a mistake. “El Cucuy” caught him in a standing choke. Ferguson turned it into a D’Arce choke. “Groovy” had no choice but to tap or nap. He chose to tap.

Final Result: Tony Ferguson def. Lando Vannata via Submission (D’Arce choke) – R2, 2:22

Khabib Blasts Tony Ferguson – For Doing The Same Thing He Did

Top-ranked UFC lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov is currently without a fight, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to take time off from calling out other contenders in the stacked 155-pound arena. Top-ranked UFC lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov is currently without a fight, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to take time off from calling out other contenders in the stacked 155-pound arena.

And interestingly enough, in this instance, it’s for doing something that he did himself, and not all that long ago.

News arrived yesterday (Tues., June 28, 2016) that No. 3-ranked Tony Ferguson would take on undefeated newcomer Landon Vannata in the new co-main event of July 13’s UFC Fight Night 91 from South Dakota after his original opponent, No. 10-ranked Michael Chiesa, withdrew with a back injury.

But “The Eagle” apparently isn’t impressed with “El Cucuy’s” opponent, quickly calling out Ferguson for taking on a debutant on Twitter:

While some initial skepticism of Ferguson’s level of opponent may be understandable, it’s also an odd choice of words given that Nurmagomedov also took on newcomer Darrell Horcher at April’s UFC on FOX 19 when Ferguson was forced out of their oft-scheduled (and oft-canceled) main event bout with blood in his lung. Ferguson hoped that Nurmagomedov would wait for him to soon return to the Octagon, but after two years out of the cage, “The Eagle” decided that he needed a paycheck (and perhaps a win) more.

Nurmagomedov also stated he would be unable to fight at any of the UFC’s many midsummer cards due to religious obligations. It’s no surprise to see a bit of shade thrown Ferguson’s way by the dominant Dagestani, but given that he essentially fought in exactly the same circumstances just over two months ago – also by no fault of his own – perhaps he should have given “El Cucuy” a bit of understanding.

After all, he wasn’t willing to give Ferguson the fight for a third time.

Tony Ferguson Receives New Opponent, Loses Main Event Slot

Red hot No. 3-ranked UFC lightweight contender Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson has won an ultra-impressive seven straight and was slated to main event the upcoming UFC Fight Night 91 card on July 13, 2016 opposite No. 10-ranked Michael “Maverick” Chiesa. Yesterday (June 27, 2016), however, it was reported that Chiesa had suffered a back injury that would force him to withdraw from the bout.

According to a report from MMAJunkie, the UFC has called upon a new opponent for Ferguson, but it’s come at a price, as “El Cucuy” has lost his main event slot. Instead, he will now co-headline the card in a clash with UFC newcomer Landon Vannata.

Vannata, a member of the famed Jackson-Winklejohn Gym in New Mexico, boasts an impressive undefeated professional record of 8-0 with seven stoppages. He will undoubtedly be jumping up in competition and facing off with his toughest test to date when he meets Ferguson.

“El Cucuy” was most recently seen scoring a victory over deadly striker Edson Barboza. He was then slated to take on top contender and undefeated phenom Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov in April, but he was forced to withdraw from the bout with a lung injury.

Moving up into the main event spot will be an intriguing bantamweight bout between former title challenger Michael “Mayday” MacDonald and Brazilian slugger John “Hands of Stone” Lineker.

UFC Fight Night 91 will go down from the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

After his second round submission victory of Beneil Dariush at UFC on FOX 19, former Ultimate Fighter Season 15 (TUF 15) winner Michael Chiesa proceeded to call out No. 3-ranked Tony Ferguson to a 155-pound clash.

Ferguson gladly accepted the contest and the two were set to square off in the main event of UFC Fight Night 91 in July.

Sadly Ferguson revealed on Twitter today that due to an unfortunate back injury suffered in training camp, he has been forced to pull out of the highly-anticipated lightweight bout:

“To my family, friends and fans. As reported below, a back injury has forced me out of my scheduled fight for July 13th against Tony Ferguson. During a routine training session, I felt a pop and shift in my lower back followed by very very sharp pains that left me on the floor.

I found out today I have a fully ruptured disk, I will undergo 8 weeks of physical therapy and rehab to hopefully avoid having to go under the knife and get back surgery. Thanks to everyone that supports me, my teammates and coaches, the city of Spokane and all my fans around the world. I’ll be back stronger. – Mav”

The UFC is currently in the process of finding Ferguson a new opponent.

UFC Fight Night 91 is set to go down live on FS1 from the Denny Stanford Primiere Center, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on July 13, 2016.
