Tony Ferguson lays glove in the Octagon, weighs up retirement after UFC Abu Dhabi loss

Former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson appears to finally have one foot – or glove, albeit outside combat sports off the back of his record-settting eight consecutive loss at UFC Abu Dhabi tonight, confirming he will weigh-up retirement amid continued urging.

Ferguson, a former undisputed lightweight titleholder, suffered a record-breaking eight consecutive defeat tonight in his main card return against fellow veteran Michael Chiesa, dropping an opening round rear-naked choke submission loss to the Washington native.

The loss came as Ferguson’s eight on the trot since 2020 – where prior before that skid, he had enjoyed a stunning, record-setting twelve fight run of consecutive wins, including an interim title success against promotional alum, Kevin Lee.

And handed the microphone tonight to much fan appraisal in Abu Dhabi, Ferguson had donned one glove on the Octagon canvas, claimed he would bring his second with him home, and discuss a potential retirement from mixed martial arts with his family.

In the midst of a disappointing skid, Oxnard veteran, Ferguson – who also won The Ultimate Fighter 13, had dropped prior losses to Paddy Pimblett, King Green, Nate Diaz, Michael Chandler, Beneil Dariush, Charles Oliveira, and Justin Gaethje.

Submitting the above-mentioned, Lee back in 2017, Ferguson was minted the interim lightweight champion, and during his impressive run through 155lbs competition, had beaten names including Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone, Rafael dos Anjos, Josh Thomson, Edson Barboza, and Gleison Tibau to name a few.

Forever linked with a title grudge fight with the retired Hall of Fame star, the unbeaten, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Ferguson failed to ever share the Octagon with the former undisputed titleholder during their respective tenures, due to injuries, illness, and travel restrictions amid a worldwide pandemic.

The losing streak continued for Tony Ferguson at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night in Abu Dhabi, and it looks to have marked his farewell.

The former interim UFC lightweight champion entered 2020 riding the second-longest winning run in the 155-pound division’s history. At that point, he was touted as a threat to the great Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Now, Ferguson is on a different kind of streak. An eight-fight losing skid.

Since having his unbeaten period brought to a crashing halt by Justin Gaethje, “El Cucuy” has lost a further seven outings, the most recent of which came on August 3 in the Middle East.

After dismissing calls for him to retire after a decision defeat to Paddy Pimblett last December, Ferguson returned to action up at welterweight to face Michael Chiesa at the Etihad Arena.

The longtime fan favorite didn’t reach the first horn, with “Maverick” locking in a rear-naked choke for the tap in round one.

The result has left Ferguson with an unwanted record, having lost the most consecutive fights in UFC history.

Finally, it would appear that the taste of defeat has the 40-year-old considering calling it quits, as he told Daniel Cormier post-fight that he is pondering retirement. For now, he’s hung up just the one glove, with the other pending discussion with his family.

Determined to snap a staggering seven-fight losing streak, former interim lightweight titleholder Tony Ferguson returned to the Octagon on Saturday night for a scrap with TUF alumnus Michael Chiesa at UFC Abu Dhabi.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be for ‘El Cucuy‘ who found himself on the wrong side of history, dropping his eighth straight following a first-round submission loss to ‘Maverick.

Ferguson came out and put pressure on Chiesa early, but neither fighter threw a strike until we were already more than a minute into the contest. As things began to open up, it was clear that Chiesa had the striking advantage, peppering Ferguson with some stiff right hands.

Just past the three-minute mark, Chiesa moved in and landed an all-too-easy takedown before securing Ferguson’s back. Once there, it was just a matter of time.

Moments later, Chiesa cinched his arm under Ferguson’s chin, forcing ‘El Cucuy’ to tap out.

Immediately following the fight, Ferguson laid down one glove, acknowledging that while his UFC career may be over, he can’t guarantee you won’t see him pop up somewhere else.

Tony Ferguson plans to keep fighting in the UFC until the wheels fall off

Tony Ferguson has no plans to retire after UFC Abu Dhabi as Dana White had hoped.

Ferguson is set to take on Michael Chiesa as he’s on a seven-fight losing streak and White has said win-or-lose he hopes this is the final fight for Ferguson. However, ‘El Cuucy’ says he still feels like he can compete at a high level and doesn’t see a need to retire

“Well, we want Dana to do a lot of shit too…,” Ferguson said at media day (via BJPENN.com). “I’m being real with it. At 170 pounds, I’m not killing myself to get to 155. I do feel fresher. 155 is closer to my high school wrestling weight, 152 pounds. So you guys do the math. I’m forty f*cking years old. I’ve been competing in this sport for a very long time, all around in sports for over thirty five years. Kind of crazy. Wrestled in college at 165. 170 is what I won The Ultimate Fighter at. Michael Chiesa won it at 155.”

Tony Ferguson didn’t stop there as he felt like he still has plenty of fights left to give the sport and plans on doing something extraordinary on Saturday at UFC Abu Dhabi.

“We do the math. We do the numbers. You’re not supposed to go backwards. I’ve been fighting backwards my whole entire time trying to just stay there for who god knows what reason. 170, I feel comfortable. I don’t feel like this is gonna be my last fight. I have to do some extraordinary sh*t, is what I’m planning to do,” Ferguson said.

Tony Ferguson Vows To Choke Out Michael Chiesa At UFC Abu Dhabi

Despite being on a seven-fight losing streak, Tony Ferguson still has confidence he will beat Michael Chiesa.

Ferguson not only thinks he will beat Chiesa, despite being a heavy underdog, he thinks he will be able to finish Chiesa as he expects to submit him.

“This is mixed martial arts.” Tony Ferguson said. “I’m going to go in there and outwork you. I’m going to punch you. You’re going to shoot in, I’m going to choke you out. Paddy [Pimblett] I shouldn’t have let him up [in our fight]. I had too many people telling me the wrong shit, when I know damn well I have the confidence to get to where I need to go. I have nothing against you Michael Chiesa. But, I’m going to bring the fight to you. I’m not going to give you any time to breathe, and I hope your conditioning is really good.”

Tony Ferguson last won back in June of 2019 when he beat Donald Cerrone.
