Nick Diaz Rant of the Day: St. Pierre Is a ‘Little Bitch’ for Letting the UFC Cancel Their Title Fight

Last night, MMAJunkie posted a lengthy sit-down with press-conference dodging UFC welterweight Nick Diaz, in which Nick shared his thoughts on getting bumped from his UFC 137 title fight against Georges St. Pierre, and subsequently re-booked against BJ Penn. Obviously, he’s pissed and none of it is his fault. To summarize: If Nick had known that the fight was dependent on him showing up to press conferences, he would have attended them, and he didn’t even know what he was being asked to attend in the first place, and he’d already requested that all of his PR obligations take place in California, so what the hell, right?

In Nick’s ever-warped perception, the real bad guy in the situation is Georges St. Pierre, who didn’t protest when the UFC canceled the fight. And now, friends and neighbors, it’s personal:

“I really don’t appreciate this mother [expletive] sitting there at that press conference and laughing at me,” Diaz said. “That’s some real bitch [expletive]. He’s sitting there laughing like it’s funny or something. If I saw Georges on the street and called him a bitch, I bet you he wouldn’t do [expletive]. I bet you if I walked up and gave him a slap, I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t do [expletive]. But you can’t do that to me. That’s not how it works for me. That’s something to fight about.

“It makes me mad that Georges is going to sit there and call himself a fighter, but he’s not going to stand up and say something about this. He’s going to let it ride. I think I would say something. I would at least have said, ‘I disagree. I don’t agree with canceling my fight because of some dumbass [expletive].’ Instead, he sat there and said, ‘He doesn’t have the commitment to be a champion.’ What is that? I obviously have the commitment to throw my life away. I’ve thrown my life away and sacrificed everything so that I can fight. I did that. I threw my life away so I could work hard and train and fight. That’s commitment…

“I wasn’t going to say anything in the buildup to fighting Georges,” Diaz said. “I was going to be really respectful. Georges is a great fighter. But he’s a little bitch when it comes to fighting me right now. Why is he just going along with everything? To say I don’t have the commitment? I don’t understand. He’s the one that doesn’t have the commitment.

“I know sometimes I sound like a nut when I’m talking, but there’s a lot of [expletive] to this situation. It’s ridiculous that I have to be the only one explaining what goes on behind the scenes. One of the things that has always helped me out in my career is that I’ve never dealt with this. Other people dealt with this. Now everybody is putting the blame on me. I think that needs to come off, and I think that Georges St-Pierre is a little bitch for not saying anything about it. He’s like, ‘Yeah, switch it to Condit. That’s easier. I’d love to fight my buddy. I’d love to fight my pal‘…

“I didn’t know there was a press conference,” Diaz said. “I thought I was going to do some sort of PR video shoot. I didn’t know exactly what I was doing, and they say I wasn’t able to deal with it all. I guess I wasn’t. I was too busy training to whip George St-Pierre’s ass, which I thought was more important...

“The bottom line is Georges is being a little bitch,” Diaz said. “He didn’t step up and say anything when the UFC pulled me out of this fight. I understand sometimes you have to do what you’re told, but why wouldn’t you tell the media you still want to fight me? If I was Georges, I would want to fight the best. I would have asked for the Anderson Silva fight. I would have asked to fight the Strikeforce champ. But he sits there like a robot and doesn’t say anything at all, just like he’s not going to say anything about me calling him a bitch now. If I saw B.J. Penn walking down the street and called him a bitch, we would be fighting right there on the spot.

“The truth is Georges doesn’t want to fight me in the street or in a cage. He knows who I am, and he knows where I came from. I don’t have the commitment? I’m younger than him, I have more wins in my career than he does, and I’ve worked harder to get where I am. He knows the truth, and he didn’t say anything and won’t say anything because he doesn’t want to get his ass whipped by me the same way he got his ass whipped by Jake – the night we went to the press conference and Georges went to the hospital.”

For the record, St. Pierre’s trip to the hospital after UFC 129 was due to Jake Shields illegally poking him in the eye during their fight. That’s what Nick is taking pride in, here. Just wanted to clarify.

As for GSP not sticking up for him when the UFC cancelled their fight, Diaz has been in the game long enough to know what’s expected of him as a main-eventer. St. Pierre couldn’t comprehend why Diaz would ditch the press conferences, when he took time out of his own busy training schedule to attend, so good luck finding sympathy there. And as for Diaz’s claim that he wasn’t clear on what he was being asked to show up for, it seems highly doubtful considering the lengths that Cesar Gracie went to in trying to make it happen.

At the end of the day, it wasn’t Gracie’s responsibility to get Diaz to the ball on time, and it wasn’t St. Pierre’s responsibility to throw a tantrum to keep the match together. That leaves one person that Diaz can blame. Hmm. I wonder who that could be?

UFC 137 Trash-Talk Alert: Cesar Gracie Blasts GSP’s ‘Ultimate Stalling’

George St. Pierre‘s genius as an MMA fighter is his ability to put his opponents exactly where they don’t want to be. Against strikers (see: Alves, Hardy), that usually means St. Pierre taking top position on the mat and not giving them an inch of space. Against wrestlers (see: Koscheck, Shields), it usually means keeping the fight standing and jabbing them into a living death.

But in both cases, it hasn’t translated into dramatic finishes recently. Aside from his corner-stoppage win over BJ Penn at UFC 94, the last time that GSP has legitimately TKO’d or submitted an opponent was during his rematch with Matt Serra, over three years ago. Now two months away from his UFC 137 title defense against Nick Diaz, St. Pierre has picked up a reputation among some fans and observers as a “safe” fighter. One of his recent critics is Diaz’s trainer/manager Cesar Gracie, who shared some less-than-kind words to Full Contact Fighter:

“The thing is it’s really not my business how he fights; he’s not on my team, so, I truly don’t care how he fights. Now if you’re asking me as a fan, yeah, that style is not what I like to watch. I like to watch guys that just go completely for it, take chances, and give crowds what they want, which is ‘Ultimate Fighting,’ not ‘ultimate stalling’ or anything like that.”

If Gracie is just saying that to get under St. Pierre’s skin and insult him into fighting a different kind of fight against Nick Diaz, well, his strategy probably won’t work. But from a fan’s perspective, he has a point. Keep in mind that Georges St. Pierre was unable to finish Dan Hardy in 25 minutes when they fought at UFC 111, while Carlos Condit subsequently knocked Hardy out in the first round, and Chris Lytle tapped him in the third. That seems to imply something about GSP’s finishing ability and/or risk-aversion.

Meanwhile, Nick Diaz’s current ten-fight win streak includes six TKOs and three submissions. Admittedly, Diaz’s level of competition hasn’t always been as high as GSP’s, but it’s obvious that when both fighters enter a cage, the objective is different. One is looking to win, the other is looking to kill.

So whose strategy will prove more effective when they meet on October 29th? And does GSP’s decision-streak affect your enjoyment of his fights?

Right on Cue: Chael Sonnen Picks Leben to Knock Out Wanderlei

Only days removed from his suspension, MMA’s best trash talker is eager to get his mug back in the spotlight. When asked his thoughts on tonight’s battle between fellow middleweights Chris Leben and Wanderlei Silva, Chael wasted little time in slinging some mud and continuing his verbal tirade on Wanderlei.

Neither Chael’s desire to face the “Axe Murderer” in his return bout nor his delusion that he is the Middleweight Champion have waned. The short video is peppered with gems which prove that Sonnen isn’t suffering from the dreaded mic-rust.

On how this fight will go:

“Eventually Wanderlei’s fights all end the same. You know, the referee pulling his mouthpiece out and a doctor shining a flashlight in his eyes. Until that happens I think it will be a pretty fun match to watch, but I don’t think it’s going to be ultra-competitive. I think it’s going to be Chris Leben.”

On his next course of action:

“I’m looking forward to getting back in there and defending my Middleweight Championship.”

On who he’d like to fight next:

“Either of the Silvas, from Anderson Silva to Wanderlei Silva, but that’s just because I don’t like them, that’s not because they would do much for me.”

Yeah, Chael, I could see where a second shot at achieving your lifelong dream of being a UFC champion and avenging a loss to a guy that stole victory from your hands in the closing seconds of a bout is kind of a dead-end path for you. Hey, check your schedule, and if you’re free one weekend maybe you could pencil it in?

It started out funny, quickly got silly and the latest news out of the Jason “Mayhem” Miller vs. Nick Diaz tiff just makes us feel tired and sad and a little bit annoyed. The weirdly unclickable GracieFighter.com – which according to its own time sigs has been updating its news section about once a month since Jake Shields beat Martin Kampmann back in October – posted an update on Sunday so spinny that it reads like an out-of-work Republican political strategist wrote it after a couple cocktails. Essentially the website is taking it upon itself to call off any potential fight between Diaz and Miller, which – as far we knew – wasn’t happening anyway. It’s probably best if we just let you read it in its entirety but don’t worry, the Gracie camp wrote it, so it’s pretty short.

…okay, he doesn’t really call 911. He pretends to, as part of an improvisational comedy routine titled "Randy Couture, I’mma Beatcho Ass." It’s kind of amazing, actually, and a lot more focused than Toney’s previous insane YouTube callout efforts. See, when Frank Mir threatens to kill somebody in the Octagon, he loses his WEC color-man gig and is forced to apologize to Brock Lesnar. When James "Lights Out" Toney does it? Pure magic.

Of course, there are a few other things that stand out in the video. First off, Toney is training at the M-1 Global gym in Chatsworth, California — which puts the Dark Emperor just one degree of separation away from the Last Emperor — and yeah, that’s Juanito Ibarra creeping around back there. Toney also mentions that he has a boxing match scheduled against WBA heavyweight champ David Haye on October 1st, just five weeks after the Couture fight at UFC 118. Talk about optimistic. And yes, Toney plans on murdering Haye as well. And getting away with it. And getting paid for it. A lotta money. Mucho dinero. Mucho mugambo. Mmm.

It’s one thing to deny responsibility for your own Twitter page when your creative insults start to draw attention on mainstream news outlets — particularly when you’re trying to lead a double-life as a shit-stirring heel and a respectable business owner and candidate for the Oregon State Legislature. Sure, it’s a lie that’s easily disproven, but at least we understand the motivation. What we can’t understand is the way Chael Sonnen constantly lies about everything. His record, his opponents, general details about things that happen to him in his daily life, you name it. Obvious, shameless lies. My God, they just keep coming.

So far, I’ve been a fan of Sonnen’s verbal abuse of Anderson Silva, because Silva kind of deserves it, and nobody else has had the stones to disrespect the Spider the way Sonnen has.
