Derrick Lewis made quite the statement with his second round knockout win over Travis Browne in the main event of last night’s (Sun. February 19, 2017) UFC Halifax card, but not quite as big a statement as he made in his post-fight interview.
The No. 8-ranked heavyweight struggled in the early part of his bout with ‘Hapa’ after eating a few nasty body shots that visibly hurt ‘The Black Beast.’ Lewis was able to rally, however, and utilized the power that is feared amongst his peers at heavyweight to stifle Browne.
After establishing full mount and unloading a barrage of harsh ground-and-pound, Lewis earned the biggest win of his fighting career.
Leading up to the contest Lewis made the bout personal by bringing up Browne’s history with domestic abuse, and took yet another shot at him during his post-fight interview with Brian Stann by mentioning his current girlfriend and former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey:
“I had a bigger heart than him. He calls himself a man but he likes to put his hands on women, so forget that guy. I have much more heart than he has. Where Ronda Rousey’s fine ass at?”
Looks like ‘The Black Beast’ wants him some of ‘The Rowdy One.’ What are your thoughts on Lewis’ post-fight comments? Did the rising heavyweight star go too far?

Travis Browne had a really, really bad night on Sunday.
After turning in a strong performance in the first round of his UFC Fight Night 105 main event bout with Derrick Lewis, the Hawaiian (who happens to be dating Ronda Rousey) wound up on the receiving end of an absolutely vicious series of punches that stopped the fight in the second round.
Getting knocked out is tough enough, but Browne’s bad night didn’t end when the ref waved the bout to a close. That’s because Lewis tore him apart in the most vicious post-fight interview in UFC history and punctuated his performance by making a quick overture toward Browne’s girlfriend, former UFC champion Ronda Rousey.
He started that total verbal destruction of Browne by completely no-selling his early offense. “I just got to do a No. 2, that’s all,” Lewis said when asked about body kicks he absorbed in the first round. “It’s not really hurting from the kick, I’ve just got to boo-boo.”
Adding insult to injury like that was enough to make the interview a memorable one, given how fighters rarely use their camera time to say anything more than “Oh, I’ll fight whoever Dana White asks me to next.” But when asked about how he managed his comeback, Lewis threw verbal punches that were even harder than the ones that stopped the fight.
“I just knew I had a bigger heart than him. He calls himself a man, but he likes to put his hands on women,” he responded, referencing domestic violence allegations leveled against Browne by his now-ex-wife in 2015. “So forget that guy, I’ve got much more heart than he has.”
But the coup de grace came right after when he inquired as to the location of Browne’s girlfriend, asking “Where’s Ronda Rousey‘s fine ass at?”
It doesn’t get much worse than that.
Topping all this off is how Browne may be handed a pink slip over this loss. The UFC has literally been releasing fighters by the dozen in recent weeks and with Hapa now riding a three-fight losing streak, he could end up on the free-agent list before long.
Even if he survives the cut, this is most certainly a night that he would pay to forget.
Rising heavyweight slugger Derick Lewis was looking for his biggest-ever win when he squared off with Top 10 veteran Travis Browne in the main event of last night’s (Feb. 19, 2017) UFC Fight Night 105 from the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. “The Black Beast” got it, but it wasn’t without some initial adversity.

“The Black Beast” got it, but it wasn’t without some initial adversity. Browne rocked him on multiple occasions with vicious body kicks, and Lewis was no doubt in trouble. But he weathered the storm to turn the tables in the second round, nailing Browne with huge punches to floor him and unleash a torrent that unfortunately resulted in an extremely late stoppage.
It will rate as his biggest win without question, but one has to wonder if the heavyweight opponents Lewis will potentially face in the near future have taken note of what appeared to be a weakness in the form of Browne’s body work in Halifax.
In the meantime, watch the video highlights of Lewis’ latest knockout victory here:

UFC Fight Night 105 went down tonight (Sunday, February 19, 2017) from the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The main event saw top-ten heavyweights duke it out, as Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis locked horns with Travis “Hapa” Browne.
Browne had a great deal of success with body kicks right out of the gate, hurting Lewis with his first snapping front kick to the gut. Lewis dropped his hands and grimaced on multiple occasions as Browne continued to work the body. He even had to turn his back on several occasions. Browne stayed patient and didn’t charge in for the finish. That ultimately proved his undoing.
Lewis wouldn’t concede kicking range in round two. At the first opportunity, he turned Browne onto the fence and unloaded with a barrage of haymakers. Browne survived but gave up a couple takedowns as he tried to escape close-range fight. After the second takedown, Browne once again got to his feet but was met with more bombs from “The Black Beast”. Browne hit the deck, and Lewis made sure he stayed there, putting him to sleep with one final salvo of cinder-block fists. And as has become his custom, Lewis delivered a gem of a post-fight speech.
In the co-headliner, the newest member of the middleweight division, Johny Hendricks, took on Hector Lombard. Hendricks was able to eke out a back and forth fight with the scarily powerful Lombard. Though he couldn’t get his wrestling going, step-in knees and volumes of leg kicks and punches outscored Lombard’s power punches. An elated Hendricks began his middleweight tenure with a much-needed win.

Swangin' & Bangin' or Hapa?
(Yes, I know Lewis's nickname is 'Black Beast, but I like Swangin' & Bangin' better).
