Cody Garbrandt def. Trevin Jones via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us tonight, March 4, 2023, for UFC 285, headlined by back-to-back title fights showcasing former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former interim UFC heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane, and then UFC flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko, who faced no. 6 ranked Alexa Grasso in attempt to make the eighth successful defense of her title in the co-main event of the evening.

Headlining the preliminary card was former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt, who was initially slated to face Julio Arce at this event. However, Arce was recently forced from the bout with a knee injury and replaced by Trevin Jones.

Since winning the bantamweight title, Garbrandt had gone 1-5 over his latest six appearances, bringing his record from 11-0 to 12-5, while Jones opened up his respective UFC tenure with back-to-back knockout victories over Timur Valiev and Mario Bautista before dropping his last three-straight fights.

Round one

Cody Garbrandt opens up the bout with a pair of nasty body kicks, and he continues to land them throughout the first round. He also lands a nice overhand right and a good right cross to the body. His activity isn’t high, but he isn’t missing much and he’s out-striking Jones.

Round two

Garbrandt opens up the second with a beautifully timed takedown as he slams Jones straight into side control, though Jones is back to his feet not long thereafter. Garbrandt times another perfect takedown shot midway through the second and remains in Jones’ guard for a good 80 seconds before briefly taking his back.

This was a well rounded Cody Garbrandt we saw tonight at UFC 285, Trevin Jones landed just eight strikes through the first 10 minutes.

Round three

Garbrandt coasts the entire third round, but gets caught with a hard two-punch combination from Jones that hurts him pretty badly with about 90 seconds left in the fight. Garbrandt ties up with him, but gets caught with another right before he’s taken down. Jones remains on top of Garbrandt for the final minute of the fight.

It wasn’t the most eventful affair, there were just 21 significant strikes landed by Cody Garbrandt to Trevin Jones’ 10 with two minutes left on the clock, but the former bantamweight champion gets back to his winning ways with a universal 29-28 unanimous decision victory tonight at UFC 285.

Trevin Jones

Trevin Jones is set to take on Raoni Barcelos at UFC Vegas 61, where he promises an all-time performance, stating: “I’m expecting myself to perform a lot better than any fight of my life”

Trevin Jones made his UFC debut in 2020, on just 2 days’ notice when he took on the extremely dangerous Timur Valiev. He would score a massive upset TKO win, which would be later overturned. However, Jones followed that up with another TKO win the next year, but since then, he’s been on a 2 fight-losing streak. This has led ‘5 Star’ Jones to explore more training options, as he told Lowkick MMA’s Alex Behunin in an exclusive interview.

“I went to Korea for a little bit. I got a lot of work there. I went to Thailand, I spent almost a month there. That’s where I actually did my camp.”

Trevin Jones looks to get back in the win column after a string of injuries

Prior to taking on Javid Basharat, Jones was riddled with injuries, which was the reason why he couldn’t meet Barcelos for their previous date.

“I had a little leg injury, knee injury, ankle injury. It was my ankle at first, but after it healed, it turned into my knee. I was actually supposed to fight Raoni before fighting Javid. That’s why I couldn’t fight Raoni because my knee was messed up.”

Despite the uphill battle, Trevin Jones nearly pulled off the win against Basharat, only for the judges to give it to Javid. Jones saw that as a learning lesson, as he promises to be more aggressive in his fight against Barcelos.

“Biggest thing I took away from the Javid fight was move forward a little bit more.”

When it comes to facing Barcelos, Trevin Jones is confident that he’ll be able to flip Barcelos’ biggest advantage against him, and catch him with some precise and powerful counter shots.

“It’s a good matchup. He’s mostly boxing-heavy. I know he has wrestling, I know he has a jiu jitsu black belt, but he’s a striker. He puts pressure on the guys and try to break them with pressure and the hands, but at the same time, he’s very vulnerable for my counters and my power.”

The fight goes down this weekend on a card headlined by Mackenzie Dern and Yan Xiaonan. However, Jones and Barcelos have a really good shot at stealing the spotlight with a big performance or a fight of the night type match, as both look to get back to their winning ways.

Earlier tonight (Sat. August 22, 2020) UFC Fight Night: Munhoz vs. Edgar took place from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The facility played host to the long-awaited Bantamweight debut of Frankie Edgar who faced off against the number five ranked Pedro Munhoz. After a five-round war the judges saw the fight for Edgar who won by split decision. On the day of the event the co-main event fell out due to Ovince Saint Preux testing positive for COVID-19 seeing Light-Heavyweight’s Mike Rodriguez and Marcin Prachino take the slot. In their bout, Rodriguez found a devastating elbow to start the end of the fight for Prachino. Outside of these two bouts, there were many moments on the card worthy of bonuses.

Fight of the night came in the main event between Pedro Munhoz and Frankie Edgar. Entering the first round Munhoz landed multiple heavy right hands while Edgar seemed to land just as often resulting in what was a close round. In the second round, Edgar managed to up the pace by mixing in takedowns that helped him to secure the round. In the third round, Munhoz came out and attacked the legs of Edgar to take away some of his mobility while both fighters traded shots. The fourth and fifth rounds were fairly event resulting in a split decision on the scorecards going to Edgar.

The First Performance of the Night bonus went to Trevin Jones in the opening fight of the night. After taking a flurry of strikes and almost being put away in round one, there seemed little hope for Jones going in the second round, however, he managed to fight a huge right hand to finish the job and defeat Timur Valiev via TKO.

The final Performance of the Night bonus went to Shana Dobson for her upset victory over Mariya Agapova. After weathering the storm in round one Dobson came out fast in the second round quickly taking Agapova down and closing the show.
