UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and middleweight champion Michael ‘The Count’ Bisping have begun quite the rivalry with one another as of late, after an Instagram video was posted on Bisping’s account in which the two agreed to fight in a catchweight bout of 180 pounds.

Both men have been trying to make the bout happen as of late, and took it a step further when the two engaged in a war of words on Bisping’s SiriusXM radio show The Countdown (courtesy of MMA Fighting). Bisping warned Woodley not to believe everything that the ‘yes men’ which are surrounding him are telling him, and that if they meet in the Octagon he’ll beat him in a similar fashion to which Nate Marquardt did in 2012:

“Don’t believe everything that people say to you, Tyron, because people kiss the ass when you’re a world champion,” Bisping said. “But I’ve been around long enough to know that it’s all bullsh*t, so don’t believe everything that all your little team, all your little ‘yes men.’ Everything they’re telling you, it ain’t true, because I’ll do to you what f*cking Nate Marquardt did to you and beat the f*ck out of you, buddy.”

“Because it’s an easy fight for me,” Bisping said. “You’re an easy fight.”

Woodley would respond by claiming that Bisping’s title win was only a matter of chance, as ‘The Count’ was bound to earn a title opportunity and get lucky playing the ‘numbers game’:

“Do the math. Bisping, do the math,” Woodley said. “How many fights have you had in the UFC and how many wins? I’m the UFC champion with six or seven wins. I’m just smarter. I fight tougher guys and I actually beat them. You fight the tougher guys and lose to them. Eventually, as long as you kept up with the sport, you were eventually going to fight for a world title and get lucky. We all knew that. It’s a numbers game.”

Bisping would go on to insult Woodley’s fighting style, calling him a boring fighter and revealing that his manager advised him not to take the fight because of it. Despite his management’s advice, the British champ says he’s willing to step into the Octagon with Woodley regardless to settle their differences:

“I just [talked to] my manager,” Bisping said. “We said we’d do it, and he said, ‘you don’t want that really because no one gives a sh*t about Tyron, because the way he fights is super boring,’ and he said no one really wants it. But screw it, if you want to do it, I’m in.”

Michael Bisping

Woodley is coming off an amazing bout with No. 1-ranked Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in the co-main event of UFC 205, where ‘The Chosen One’ left Madison Square Garden with his title after the contest was ruled a majority draw. With no shortage of contenders at 170 pounds, Dana White may be reluctant to put pen to paper on a bout between Woodley and Bisping.

Bisping is expected to take on No. 1-ranked middleweight Yoel Romero in his next title defense, but said he’ll do his part in trying to convince White to allow him and Woodley to throw down first:

“Listen man, 100-percent, I’m down. Just let them know,” Bisping said. “Let them know. Tell him, send the text to Dana (White) saying, ‘yo, we were serious about that.’ I’ll do the same thing right now.”

What do you think about the potential super fight the pair are trying to promote so heavily? Is this a fight you want to see happen?

Opinion: Tyron Woodley Should Focus On Welterweight Division Instead of Michael Bisping

Tyron Woodley. The UFC welterweight champion. The man looking for a big payday. And why the hell not? That’s the point of prize fighting in the first place isn’t it? To throw your bones at another human being and get paid loads of cash. At least that’s how things would be in a perfect world. Instead, fighters are competing against each other for a disporportionate amount of money compared to what they bring in. Tyron Woodley wants his big payday and he’s looking to get it through battling against fellow champion Michael Bisping. The problem with that is Woodley once again has the worst timing.

At UFC 205, Woodley faced off with a little known fighter named Stephen Thompson. They battled it out back and forth until the final bell. The bout was ruled a draw leaving both the fighters and fans with a bitter taste in their mouths. But rather than campaigning to battle it out with Stephen Thompson for the second time and settle the score, Woodley is trying to ignore the fact that he fought to a majority draw a couple months ago and challenge Michael Bisping for the middleweight title.

Huh?

Yes, prize fighting is about getting paid. But with fighting to a draw in your last match it’s going to be hard to imagine who wouldn’t want to see Stephen Thompson and Tyron Woodley battle it out for a second time. UFC 205 gave both fighters tremendous exposure, so much so that they can certainly carry a pay-per-view and generate big numbers in the process. But since Conor McGregor got his crack at the featherweight and lightweight titles it seems that everyone is jumping on the multiple title bandwagon. Even newly minted bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt is trying to call out champions in other divisions.

What Woodley, Garbrandt, and any other champion of their ilk need to understand is that while campaigning for super fights may line their pockets as well as those of the company, it’s a huge risk for the UFC. If one of their champions is defeated then they risk being diminished in some way. It’s certainly exciting to see, but the risk of Woodley getting dominated or Garbrandt getting knocked out would tarnish both the brand of the fighters as well as the brand of the promotion. It’s an easier sell to have Woodlehy rematch Thompson in the near future rather than hold up both divisions. Conor McGregor already made things complicated at featherweight and it’s unlikely that the top brass wants to see that happen again in the welterweight and middleweight divisions.

Think about it. It’s hard for people to look at Jose Aldo as the undisputed featherweight champion when he was brained by McGregor just a couple of fights ago. It diminished his brand somewhat, but certainly not enough to destroy his legacy. Nevertheless, the same could happen if Woodley faces Bisping. Rather than damage the stock of one of their champions it’s more likely that the UFC will choose to try and turn both men into superstars.

With all due respect to Woodley, he should look to set himself up as the definitive champion in his division and the big pay days will come about. He surely gained popularity with his draw against Stephen Thompson, but fighting to a draw doesn’t a dominant champion make. Instead of challenging fighters in other weight divisions, Woodley should be chomping at the bit to prove to the world that he’s the best welterweight in the world. Like it or not, the fans want clarity, the UFC wants clarity, and frankly, Woodley and Thompson need clarity before anyone starts talking about super fights.

What’s your thoughts on a potential Woodley versus Bisping showdown?

Tyron Woodley Explains Why Nick Diaz Turned Down McGregor & Lawler

With UFC 209 coming up on March 4, many were hoping either one or both of the Diaz brothers to fight on the card. Given the significance of their Stockton area code (209), it would seem a no-brainer. Perhaps missing the boat on holding the event in Stockton, the promotion has instead opted for the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the past the Diaz brothers have stated they wouldn’t fight on the same card together, so already the possibility is halved. Adding to the negative chances of seeing a Diaz on the UFC 209 card is, once again, money.

Recently Nate Diaz said he would not answer the UFC’s call for less than $20 million. Since defeating Conor McGregor at UFC 196, the younger Diaz brother has massive drawing power. This is a far cry from UFC president Dana White’s assessment of Nate not being a ‘needle mover.’ After Nick Diaz’s Nevada suspension got lifted in October, and he soon after paid the remainder of his fine, it was expected he’d be returning to the octagon. If recent reports are anything to go by, it’s far from a done deal.

Nick Diaz Where you at

Where You At Dana?

Joe Rogan first commented on Nick Diaz turning down a rematch with Robbie Lawler at UFC 209. Further discussing this point, current UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley had the following to say via MMAMania.com:

“I just asked Nick. I saw Nick in a night club. We hosted a party at Hakkasan. I was with TJ and Demetrious Johnson and Cody Garbrandt hosted his party there. So I see Nick Diaz there and went up and asked him. It is not like Nick is scared of fighting you know,” Woodley said laughing. “He’s not scared to fight me or Robbie or Conor McGregor. Nick wants to get paid man. He’s held out in the past and it has worked out in his favor. He went out there and fought Anderson Silva for close to a million bucks. He knows that he pushes the needle. Plus there is a card, 209, so he understands what he is worth to that card. So I can’t knock him for that. It’s more of a situation of him wanting to get paid.”

The report also states Conor McGregor was also turned down by Nick Diaz, although an event was not listed. Woodley continues, admitting Diaz is a bigger draw in terms of popularity:

Legendary Status

“This is the honest truth man. I can sit here an act like I am Bruce Almighty but Nick Diaz is a bigger draw than me,” said Woodley. “He is a bigger name than me. Me fighting him and me wanting to fight Nick is because I recognize and realize that I am the world champion but Nick Diaz is a legend. He has had to fight the guys like Diego Sanchez, Paul Daley and Frank Shamrock. He has had to have wars with Georges and BJ Penn to get his name to where it is.

So all I am trying to do is fight the Robbie Lawler’s, fight the Nick Diaz’s , GSP’s and Conor McGregor’s so that I can become a name that enters in to the legend category. Then people will want to fight me for the same reason I want to fight Nick. That’s all it is. There is nothing personal. I respect him as a fighter.”

There you have it. Are the UFC being too tight with the purse strings, or do the Diaz brothers want too much to fight? Honestly, after fighting for so long and becoming such a huge draw, the promotion needs to pay guys like the Diaz bros. Will they? That remains to be seen.

A super fight that no one anticipated may become a reality. Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight title holder Michael Bisping and welterweight king Tyron Woodley made some waves yesterday thanks to an Instagram video. The clip saw “The Count” and “The Chosen One” agree to a non-title catchweight bout.

Woodley took to his own Instagram account and changed his tune on the bout being non-title. Check out what he said:

“@danawhite can we get this signed already!? I can’t listen to this prick more than a minute! And I changed my mind @mikebisping I want your belt! @ufc #ufc”

If Woodley and Bisping do indeed compete for the middleweight gold, it’ll be “T-Wood’s” first bout in the 185-pound division. Nothing has been made official. Should the UFC be against this fight, it’s likely that Bisping will fight Yoel Romero next, while Woodley will likely meet Stephen Thompson again.

Both champions are colleagues on the UFC’s FOX Sports panel. On one episode of UFC Tonight, a fan asked who would win in a match-up between the two. Bisping joked that he would “whoop” Woodley.

Woodley won the welterweight championship in July 2016. “The Chosen One” knocked out then champion Robbie Lawler in the first round. “Ruthless” hadn’t been finished since a Jan. 2011 bout with Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. Woodley defended his title against Thompson at UFC 205 in New York City. The champion dropped Thompson and did the most damage, but the challenger showed heart. The fight was a majority draw.

The last time Bisping was inside the Octagon, he went to war with Dan Henderson. At UFC 100 back in July 2009, “Hendo” knocked out Bisping in brutal fashion. History almost repeated itself as Henderson knocked Bisping down twice. “The Count” weathered the storm and outworked his opponent on the feet to retain his middleweight gold.

Unbeaten in his last four outings, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley last fought to a draw against Stephen Thompson. The bout with ‘Wonderboy’ at UFC 205 was an instant classic. Given the close nature of their November 12 war, Woodley and Thompson were expected to go again in the near future. Obviously nothing is that simple in the UFC, and talks of multiple other fights have already emerged. During the days after his win over Thompson, Woodley was pondering a title defense against Conor McGregor.

Claiming he’d fight McGregor in his native Ireland, ‘The Chosen One’ was open to giving ‘The Notorious’ a crack at the 170-pound belt. Emerging out of the blue last night was a video of Woodley and middleweight champion Michael Bisping. They agreed to a catchweight bout at 180 pounds, shaking hands during the brief clip.

Woodley Changes His Mind

Perhaps sensing the somewhat pointless nature of two champions fighting for no belt, Woodley has called for a middleweight title fight. Here’s what ‘The Chose One’ posted on Instagram this morning:

@danawhite can we get this signed already!? I can’t listen to this prick more than a minute! And I changed my mind @mikebisping I want your belt! @ufc#ufc

With a stream of viable contenders at middleweight, and Woodley’s unfinished business with Thompson, does anyone want to see this fight?

Michael Bisping

Bisping

Current 185-pound boss Michael Bisping had a breakthrough 2016. His win over Anderson Silva in February led to a short notice rematch against Luke Rockhold. Overcoming the odds, ‘The Count’ avenged his loss with a riveting KO over ‘Rocky’ at UFC 199. Claiming the belt from his rival, Bisping would go on to defend against another old foe in Dan Henderson. There are many fighters, including Rockhold, Jacare Souza and Yoel Romero who would probably be very upset should Woodley jump the queue.

Five years ago today, we ran a story about then-champions Michael Bisping and Tyron Woodley agreeing to fight one another. Unfortunately, that day never came.

Today, Bisping is happily retired and competed for the last time in November 2017 in a loss to Kelvin Gastelum. Woodley is no longer in the UFC and has lost back-to-back boxing matchups to Jake Paul, including a devastating knockout that occurred last month.

Fight fans may soon have a mega bout to look forward to, though it may not be what they were expecting. Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) title holders Michael Bisping and Tyron Woodley may be going toe-to-toe down the road.

Bisping holds the middleweight strap, while Woodley is the welterweight ruler. The two happen to be colleagues for the UFC panel on FOX Sports. The next likely challenger for “The Count” is Yoel Romero, while “The Chosen One” will probably have another date with Stephen Thompson.

Neither bout has been signed and Woodley has made it a point to try to get fights that will draw big money. He’s called out Nick Diaz, Georges St. Pierre, and has ruffled feathers with lightweight king Conor McGregor.

“The Count” is no stranger to big fights himself. Bisping has traded leather with the likes of Anderson Silva, Rashad Evans, Dan Henderson, and of course Luke Rockhold. Could “T-Wood” be next?

On his Instagram account, Bisping shared a conversation he and Woodley had backstage at UFC 207. The two were talking about a potential fight at 180 pounds. Bisping said he currently weighs more than “little guy” Woodley.

While one may assume the video was all in good fun or a troll post, Woodley said, “I’m a hundred percent serious, dead ass.” The two shook hands at the end of the video and agreed to a May date. They also agreed to not put their titles on the line.

Woodley’s last bout was a majority draw against “Wonderboy” at UFC 205 in New York City. “The Chosen One” retained his title and while the fight was a draw, it was clear he did the most damage. Bisping’s last fight was a war with Dan Henderson. The middleweight champ survived two knockdowns to keep his gold and remain unbeaten on UK soil.
