Following Saturday night’s UFC pay-per-view event, UFC President Dana White spoke backstage with Megan Olivi to share his thoughts on what was an eventful evening in Atlanta, Georgia.

Regarding the Lawler-Woodley main event ending so quickly and violently, White offered the following take to Olivi.

“That’s exactly how everyone thought it would go. If Tyron Woodley could catch him in the first round with his fast, explosive punches he would probably catch Robbie and knock him out. But if Robbie took him in the second and third round, Woodley tends to gas and Robbie would dominate. That’s exactly how I saw it going, and that’s the way it went.”

It’s Sunday morning, and the MMA world is collectively left to sit and chew on yet another shocking upset in a UFC title fight.

Today, it comes in the form of Tyron Woodley’s first-round knockout of Robbie Lawler in the main event of last night’s (Sat., July 30, 2016) UFC 201 from Philips Arena in Atlanta, and while we probably shouldn’t be all that surprised due to “T-Wood’s” power and Lawler’s propensity for getting hit, it’s simply the latest in a long line of touted champions who just can’t hold onto their belts for all that long in today’s evolving MMA landscape.

Miesha Tate vs Holly Holm

All in all, seven champions have been dethroned already in 2016 after Dominick Cruz, Miesha Tate, Stipe Miocic, Michael Bisping, Eddie Alvarez, Amanda Nunes, and now Woodley unseated relatively new champions in their own right. Gone are the days of dominant champions like Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre. Jon Jones is still here, technically, but his own actions have put a serious halt to his otherwise dominant career that is now on hold for an undetermined amount of time.

To put it in a stark kind of perspective, since Woodley last fought and beat Kelvin Gastelum by split decision at UFC 182, the only champ from that time to still have the belt is Demetrious Johnson after Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Rafael dos Anjos, Daniel Cormier, Fabricio Werdum, Holly Holm, Luke Rockhold, and Conor McGregor all won their respective titles in 2015. That’s 14 new champs in a year-and-a-half, folks, and that’s the kind of shakeup that can only be seen in mixed martial arts.

Just what that means for a sport where the UFC was recently purchased for a record-setting $4 billion remains to be seen. On the surface, business has never been better, but it’s hard to say if that’s sustainable for any long-term timeframe.

Also on the surface, it would appear that, with Ronda Rousey absent from the sport and obviously not a champion, the UFC has one true and proven top pay-per-view (PPV) draw in McGregor, and he hasn’t even defended the belt he won from Jose Aldo last year.

There is going to be the argument that the frequent changing of titles prevents marketable stars from being built, and of course there will be the side that supports and applauds the inherent unpredictability of fighting and the excitement that comes along with it. Which side are you on?

UFC 201 went down last night (Saturday July 30, 2016) in Atlanta, Georgia. The reigning welterweight champion Robbie Lawler looked to defend his strap against explosive contender Tyron Woodley in the main event. ‘Ruthless’ was coming off a duo of gruelling battles against Carlos Condit and Rory MacDonald at UFC 195 and UFC 189 respectively, and many expected a similar story against ‘The Chosen One.’

As things turned out, Woodley came out and got the job done inside one round. Catching Lawler with an overhand right from hell, the hungry contender became champion as ‘Ruthless’ was sent in to another dimension against the octagon fence. It was brutal to watch, but we knew that round one was where Woodley needed to win the fight. Taking a grinder like Lawler in to the later rounds just wasn’t an option.

As the dust settled on Woodley’s impressive win, UFC president Dana White gave his opinion on the quick title fight. As the changing of yet another UFC belt in 2016 took place, White says he wasn’t surprised by the result. As quoted by MMAMania.com’s Adam Guillen Jr.:

“That’s exactly how everyone thought it would go. If Tyron Woodley could catch him in the first round with his fast, explosive punches he would probably catch Robbie and knock him out. But if Robbie took him in the second and third round, Woodley tends to gas and Robbie would dominate. That’s exactly how I saw it going. And that’s the way it went.”

With Woodley’s win came the challenge of a ‘money fight’ with Nick Diaz at UFC 202. The infamous Stockton brawler’s suspension for a failed drug test after UFC 183 came to an end this week, giving another interesting twist on the UFC welterweight picture.

Tyron Woodley Calls out Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre After UFC 201 Title Win

After a long climb up the UFC’s mountain of 170-pound talent, Tyron Woodley reached the top at UFC 201 by knocking out Robbie Lawler. Now the proud owner of a big gold belt, the newly minted welterweight champion has just one goal left; make enough cash to comfortably retire.

Speaking with the assembled media at the UFC 201 post-fight press conference (warning, NSFW language), the Chosen One called for a big-money fight against an established name while dismissing any discussion of facing less-marketable opposition. Via BloodyElbow.com’s Anton Tabuena:

You know, I want to make some money now, to be honest…This is a sport where we can make cash now, so instead of just saying ‘this person deserves it, he worked his way up the ranks,’ I think Nick Diaz comes out of suspension in 2 days. I would love to fight him at UFC 202, I know his brother is fighting (there)…I would like to give him that opportunity, or I would like to fight Georges St-Pierre in New York City.

That declaration will almost certainly irk diehard fans. In many ways, Woodley fell into his own title shot at UFC 201 by narrowly edging out Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 183 and having a UFC 192 fight with Johny Hendricks get scrapped due to a botched weight cut. Many fans claim that Woodley, who sat out 18 months for a fight with Lawler, cut the line by getting a title shot instead of surging veteran Demian Maia or knockout artist Stephen Thompson.

That said, the move is undeniably good business. The UFC has drawn constant questions about fighter pay over the last few years, and the only reliable way for talented-yet-unknown fighters to make bank is by working opposite established names. Fights with either St-Pierre or Diaz offer substantially larger paydays than any alternative, and that would be further boosted by taking a spot on a big card like UFC 202 or UFC 205.

So what does he think should come next for Thompson, who many view as next in line for the title?

“Stephen Thompson said he wanted to fight Robbie Lawler. … He’ll get the opportunity to have that fight,” he said and continued, “I feel no obligation to go by the rankings. We all know how those rankings are produced anyway. I want to fight the money fights.”

While it’s unlikely he gets a crack at St-Pierre (who likely has no interest in going after the welterweight title), a fight with either Nick or Nate Diaz is a legitimate possibility.

As Woodley stated, Nick will soon come off suspension and, outside fighting St-Pierre himself, has few logical options for a return opponent. A title fight with Woodley could be big enough to lure him back into the cage, and could do numbers at the box office.

Nate is in a similar position. Currently lined up to face Conor McGregor in a rematch at UFC 202, there are very few lucrative matchups available to him past that. With another win, he will have out-grown any potential fighters in the lightweight division, and has little to work with in a burdensome welterweight division.

Ultimately, it’s impossible to guess what will happen at this point. The welterweight title picture just became much more chaotic…and not necessarily in a bad way.

Tyron Woodley Calls Out Nick Diaz For ‘Money Fight’ At UFC 202

Continuing the jaw-dropping streak of UFC champions losing their belt by brutal stoppage, new welterweight champion Tyron Woodley put a stamp on his title victory when he knocked out Robbie Lawler with one massive punch in the main event of last night’s (Sat., July 30, 2016) UFC 201 from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

After the bout, Woodley appeared on the post-fight show on FOX Sports 1, where top-ranked welterweight contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson was auspiciously a co-host for the evening. With two straight wins over Rory MacDonald and Johny Hendricks, it’s largely perceived that “Wonderboy” would receive the next shot, something he predictably called out for while interviewing Woodley:

“That was a first round finish, and I know you’re not injured. What are the chances we get it on in November my friend?”

But while “Wonderboy” wants to fight Woodley at the UFC’s New York debut event of UFC 205 in November, the new champ has other plans. He’s said he’s looking for a big money fight with a certain returning fan favorite instead:

Woodley took a jab at Thompson by citing his preference to fight Lawler rather than him, and said he would rather get a more lucrative bout with longtime veteran Nick Diaz, who returns from suspension next month, at August’s UFC 202:

“Well this is what I think, I think that you say you wanted to fight Robbie Lawler, and you’ll get an opportunity to fight Robbie Lawler, because who I wanna fight now is, I think now Nick Diaz comes off of suspension in two days, he’s a money fight. I’ve been in this game, I’m an O.G., I wanna make the big dough, so if he wants to fight August with his brother Nate Diaz, I think me and him can show down at that event. I’m uninjured, August, I’m ready to go, 202, let’s make the money. I think he’s deserved it, I think he’s put enough butts in the seats, he deserves to make that payday, so let’s go get it.”

Thompson wouldn’t stop pressing the issue, however, issuing a bit of a half-hearted congratulations to Woodley before proclaiming he could beat both Woodley and Diaz:

“I know I got your number. I know you count on Nick Diaz; I know I can beat both of you guys. I’m just saying man, come on, you gotta give it to me!”

Woodley had the perfect response for that, stating that “Wonderboy “ will have his chance after he gets his big payday and Thompson fights some lower-ranked ‘young buck’ contenders:

“You’ll get your chance after I go make this money. You and the rest of the ‘young bucks’ can scrap each other up; Gastelum and Magny, I’m gonna go get that money.”

UFC 200 proved to be an amazing event last night (July 30, 2016), and saw a new champion being crowned when it was all said and done in the Phillips Arena from Atlanta. The main event of the evening saw a 170-pound title bout end with a bang after challenger Tyron Woodley landed a haymaker to the chin of the surging now-former welterweight king Robbie Lawler’s chin, sending ‘Ruthless’ crashing to the mat for an early slumber. Woodley’s efforts earned him a $50,000 bonus for the highlight reel finish and ‘Performance of the Night’.

In the co-main event of the evening two of the women’s strawweight division’s elite threw down for the opportunity to take on reigning Polish knockout artist Joanna Jedrzejczyk for a shot at 115-pound glory. Rose Namajunas and Karolina Kowalkiewicz put on a three round war in which both women battled it out with everything they had in front of 10,240 strong, however, in the end it was Kowalkiewicz who would emerge victorious after edging ‘Thug’ in a split decision. Both women would earn $50,000 for their efforts with ‘Fight of the Night’ honors.

Two men who really needed a win coming off losses were Matt Brown and Jake Ellenberger, who met one another on the main card of UFC 201. Ellenberger came right out of the gates with something to prove, and took it to ‘The Imortal’ without wasting any time, dropping him in the process. After briefly recovering Brown would once again be dropped by ‘The Juggernaut’, but this time he wouldn’t be getting up again. Ellenberger was awarded ‘Performance of the Night’ and $50,000 for his dominating performance.
