Two weeks away from his third defense of the UFC welterweight title when he meets Tyron Woodley in the main event of July 30’s UFC 201 from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, it’s safe to say Robbie Lawler has never looked better in his 15-year MMA career than he has fighting out of American Top Team (ATT) in South Florida.

There’s just one strange aspect about that and his upcoming bout with Woodley, however, as “The Chosen One” has actually been a member of the ATT family longer than “Ruthless” has.

Still, that doesn’t mean Lawler considers his opponent a teammate, an opinion he detailed by describing Woodley’s, who owns an ATT gym in his home of Missouri, locational differences during the UFC 201 media lunch earlier this week (transcribed by FOX Sports):

“Woodley was there before me, he’s been part of ATT (American Top Team) long before I got there, but he hasn’t been down in Coconut Creek doing his training camps. Like I don’t think he’s been down there for two years and he was rarely down there before so I don’t really look at him as a teammate.”

Lawler continued on with his view of a teammate, which was not surprisingly someone helping you improve your abilities day in and day out. The champ trains in a different city than Woodley, and that’s just not something that their far-off relationship involves:

“A teammate’s a guy who’s in there everyday grinding, making other guys better, and building the atmosphere. He’s definitely part of the ATT family but he’s not one of my teammates.”

While that could be a small barb at Woodley, it could also be a simple statement of fact from the somber, aggressive champion.

Lawler has looked reinvented at Coconut Creek, so it’s no surprise that he’s favored to defend his belt once again. After his UFC 192 bout with former champion Johny Hendricks was canceled due to “Bigg Rigg” missing weight and being rushed to the hospital, “The Chosen One” has been out of action since his close split decision win over Kelvin Gastelum in January of last year.

He’s won two of his last three with a dominant loss to No. 2-ranked Rory MacDonald, who Lawler sent packing in a bloody back-and-forth battle last summer at UFC 189, and is 4-2 over his last six overall.

But even though the odds tilt in Lawler’s favor, we’ve seen many UFC title bouts end in an upset, and both of these fighters have the power to put out any competitor’s lights.

Expect “Ruthless” to be willing to use that come July 30, as this fight isn’t quite the ‘teammate vs. teammate’ contest that’s it’s bueing built as.

Robbie Lawler Defends Daniel Cormier’s UFC 200 Win Over Anderson Silva

Faced with fighting a legend from a smaller weight class after his arch rival Jon Jones was flagged for a USADA violation only days before their scheduled UFC 200 main event, light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier did what most expected him to do against late replacement Anderson Silva, routinely taking the dangerous ‘Spider’ down and laying on him en route to a unanimous decision victory and a long-awaited payday.

Cormier was in a sort of lose-lose proposition, as the entire week’s events had certainly drained him mentally, while looking to put on an exciting fight with Silva in his area of expertise could have potentially been devastating to his standing. While the fans at T-Mobile Arena obviously weren’t pleased by the results, there’s another side of the tale that begs some understanding beyond a surface desire for an all-out war in the octagon.

Cormier’s fellow fighters understood where he was coming from and what he had to go through. Speaking during a media luncheon in Los Angeles (via MMA Fighting) yesterday (July 12, 2016) to promote his UFC 201 showdown with Tyron Woodley, welterweight champ Robbie Lawler defended the 205-pound champ by noting that standing with Silva, who rocked Cormier with a vicious body kick in the bout’s final minute, was not the best course of action:

“Daniel did what he needed to do. It wasn’t a crowd favorite-type fight, but Anderson Silva is a crafty individual. You talk about a guy who studied martial arts for the longest time, he’s a standup fighter who even at his age is very crafty, still has one-punch power, one-kick power. He did what he had to do to get the victory.”

Robbie Lawler

“Ruthless” also noted that despite it not being a crowd favorite type of fight, Cormier needed to play it safe to get a paycheck after two proposed bouts with Jones had fallen through this year. At the end of the day, Lawler reminded fans they weren’t being punched and kicked:

“The fans wanted to see something different. They’re not the ones going in there getting punched and kicked. I can see why they weren’t very excited about it. But Daniel needs to put food on his family’s table as long as possible and he got the victory.”

Many have jumped all over Cormier to criticize his performance – namely Donald Cerrone, who used a homophobic slur to describe his wrestling-focused victory – but Lawler obviously brings a fresh perspective from the viewpoint of a fighter who’s been there before and knows the grind of having to put food on the table through fighting.

One of the fight game’s most entertaining fighters, Lawler knows what it takes to put on a memorable war, and he can understand why fans didn’t exactly see Cormier’s win over Silva as entertaining.

But he also understands why he did what he did from a human point of view; something that may get all too lost in the shuffle of wanting a bloody, entertaining war from a purely selfish perspective. Do you agree with Lawler?

There’s a superb streak of UFC events drawing ever closer, as the UFC 200 fight week featuring the Ultimate Fighter 23 finals and the UFC Fight Night 90 card is just over a week away. Following that crazy three day run of mixed martial arts action, we’ve got UFC 201 to look forward to, and arguably the most exciting welterweight champion of all time will return on that card. Robbie Lawler takes on Tyron Woodley in the evening’s main event, topping off a stacked event from Atlanta, Georgia.

‘Ruthless’ is on a five fight streak and has been involved in two consecutive fights that could easily be called the greatest 170-pound title contests ever. A thrilling fight of the year against Rory MacDonald at UFC 189 was followed by a five round was against Carlos Condit at UFC 195, both fights are widely regarded as the most entertaining in the division’s history. But at UFC 201 Lawler faces a very different kind of fighter.

UFC-201[1]

Unlike MacDonald and Condit, ‘The Chosen One’ has explosive one punch power, but also not akin to those two, Woodley has never seen a fifth round. Although he’s come under some criticism for not being conservative enough with his energy in the past, ‘T-Wood’ has certainly shown he can get the job done early on in the fight. Speaking recently with FOX Sports, the next contender to the welterweight strap says he has many ways to win the fight:

“Even after I signed the bout agreement, it just didn’t seem real because you know how our sport is — crazy things happen,” he continued. But then when I got to training camp and I started watching film, I started breaking him down, it just got real, man.”

“I can take it to the ground and grapple, I can wrestle, I can obviously strike with creative strikes and get there really quickly, but in addition to that, I just feel I can brawl and bang as well so there’s multiple different ways I feel comfortable winning the fight.”

tyron woodley..

Although it’s become a trademark of sorts for Lawler to become embroiled in gruelling battles of attrition, Woodley says he is not averse to testing his mettle in that respect at UFC 201:

“I feel that Robbie has one way to be successful — get me to stand in front of him and go with a ‘who got the bigger balls contest?,’ “

“And even in that situation, I’ve got a pretty good chance of knocking him out.”

A first round TKO over Dong Hyun Kim in 2014 was followed by a narrow split decision against Kelvin Gastelum in early 2015. Woodley has been out for nearly 18 months now and has averaged one fight per year since his unanimous decision loss to ‘Red King’ at UFC 174. Perhaps a contest of testicular fortitude against a war torn veteran like Lawler is not the wisest idea?

‘Wonderboy’ Says He Thinks He Can Knock Out Robbie Lawler

Coming off of his dominant win over Rory MacDonald at last weekend’s UFC Fight Night 89 event in Ottawa, Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson is certain that he’s next in line for a crack at the 170-pound title.

Before ‘Wonderboy’ can get his shot, however, he has to wait and see just who will be holding the welterweight crown, as current champion Robbie Lawler is set to battle it out for the strap with No. 3-ranked Tyron Woodley in the main event of UFC 201.

Thompson told FOX Sports that he expects Lawler to remain the 170-pound champion when it’s all said and done in Atlanta:

“Just from what I’ve seen in the past from both fighters, Robbie Lawler gets stronger as the fight goes on.

He breaks a lot of guys mentally that way. When guys are starting to get tired, Robbie Lawler’s just picking it up. Tyron’s the opposite of that,” Thompson said.

Hopefully he’s (Woodley) worked on his cardio, but in the past he slows down as the fight gets longer. He goes out very hard in the first round, very explosive in the first round, but if Robbie Lawler gets past that first round, which I believe he will, I think he’s coming away with a win, possibly a knockout.”

While Thompson isn’t too confident in Woodley’s ability to get the job done against Lawler, ‘Wonderboy’ is determined to be the one to put an end to ‘The Ruthless One’s’ title reign:

“I believe I can (knock him out),” Thompson said. “I believed I could knock out Rory MacDonald, Johny Hendricks and Jake Ellenberger, and sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t, but I know I can knock these guys out.

It definitely puts a smile on my face that people think I might be a favorite in that fight,” Thompson said.

“I think people are starting to see the skills I have, the karate style that I use, and hopefully we’ll get more people out there studying and getting into karate as well. It does put a smile on my face.”

‘Wonderboy’ is one of the most dynamic strikers we’ve ever seen in the sport, due in large part to his impressive 57-0 kickboxing career, and he believes he has everything it takes to de-throne ‘Ruthless’:

“I think I am the better striker. He’s the type of guy that stands in front of you, he’s very, very tough.

I believe he’s slower than Rory MacDonald. I believe I’m faster than him. The speed is going to be tough for him, and I think the angles are going to be tough for him.

But he’s a champion, he’s going to be coming with his ‘A’ game. I need to be ready for the best Robbie Lawler in the world.”

While Lawler and Woodley slug it out at UFC 201 in the Phillips Arena, Thompson says he wouldn’t mind taking a trip to Georgia to witness the title bout firsthand:

“I want to be there,” Thompson said. “If not there, hopefully I’ll be in the studio analyzing the fight.”

UFC 201 takes place live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia on July 30, 2016.

Stephen Thompson Says Rory MacDonald Is ‘One-Dimensional’

The TD Arena in Ottawa, Canada is set to shakeup Saturday night, as hometown hero and No. 1-ranked welterweight Rory MacDonald clashes with the No. 2-ranked Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in the exciting UFC Fight Night 89 main event.

‘Wonderboy’ is riding into Saturday night hot off a first round knockout win over former champion Johnny Hendricks in February, while MacDonald is coming off an eleven-month-layoff following his five round war with current title holder Robbie Lawler at UFC 189.

Ahead of his presumable title eliminator bout with MacDonald, Thompson took some time to speak to our friends over at Submission Radio about the perennial 170-pound bout. ‘Wonderboy’ began by expressing his displeasure for being passed up for a title shot in favor of Tyron Woodley, after downing Hendricks at UFC Fight Night 82 just four months ago:

stephen thompson“To be honest with you, yes. It’s kind of upsetting that it’s happening this way,” Thompson said.

“I was a little disappointed that I didn’t get the title shot. Just because I finished the former welterweight champion and a guy that went five rounds with Georges St-Pierre —?? which is controversial —?? ten rounds with the champion now.

And even though Robbie won the last one, it was still controversial,” Thompson said. “So I see it as me beating the welterweight champion. And the fact that Rory just fought him for the title in July … It’s almost like they’re giving away a second shot for the title. But yeah, man, sometimes that happens.”

Despite being focused on a title opportunity Thompson is sure to not overlook the ‘dangerous’ MacDonald, who he needs to get past if he wants a shot at the gold:

“You have obstacles that are gonna get in your way and you gotta just mow through it. He is the number one, I’m the number two,” Thompson said.

“So I wanna be that number one spot. I want that. And it’s a dangerous guy to do that [against], you know? [laughs] I was wanting the title shot, but he’s definitely a dangerous guy to be stepping in the octagon with.

Which is why he’s the number one contender. But you know, we’re buds and we’re going to be friends before and after the fight.”

johny-hendricks-stephen-thompson-ufc-fight-night-82Thompson stated that he will be in excellent shape for his weekend war with MacDonald, and that he has carefully studied the Canadian’s ‘one-dimensional’ striking style:

“I’m gonna be in the best shape of my life. So I know I’ll be able to go hard for those five, five minute rounds. And that’s what I’m preparing for, you know, keeping him away with my hands and feet,” he promised.

“I know [MacDonald is] kind of one-dimensional when it comes to the striking. He keeps his left side forward, he loves to walk his way in to throw his jab.

And then once he sets down, he likes to throw combinations. Right after that combination, he shoots for the leg. So I’m gonna be prepared for that, staying on my toes, working angles.

He may come out with a different strategy, maybe just bum rush me to the cage or try to get me to the ground quick.

Although ‘Wonderboy’ finds MacDonald’s striking to be one-dimensional, he is well aware that the UFC veteran has steadily evolved throughout his incredibly impressive career:

“That’s the thing about those guys, about Rory. He evolves. He gets better and he comes in with different tricks. So we’re going to see what happens, man.

And that’s why I’m excited just to see what he’s bringing to the table and how I’m gonna react to that. But wherever the fight goes, I’m gonna be prepared for it.

If a knockout happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, I’m going all five minute rounds, baby.”

MMA: UFC 160-Thompson vs BurrellA knockout over Hendricks may have not been enough to secure Thompson a title shot in the eyes of UFC brass before, however, ‘Wonderboy’ says something has ‘gotta be wrong’ if he doesn’t get his shot at the 170-pound crown with a win over ‘The Red King’:

“You know; people don’t really take me serious because I am a nice guy. But they … Man, something’s gotta be wrong if they don’t give it to me after this.”

Rory MacDonald and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson are set to headline UFC Fight Night 89 live on FS1 from the TD Arena, in Ottawa, Canada on June 18, 2016.
