Colby Covington impressed many people with his recent performance — so much so that even bitter rival Tyron Woodley couldn’t hate on him.

Covington made it seven wins in a row when he dominated Robbie Lawler over five rounds in their UFC Newark headliner this past weekend. It now puts “Chaos” in a position to challenge Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title next.

And Woodley seemed to be impressed by what he called a “great performance” from his former teammate:

“The actual performance, he had a great performance,” Woodley said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday. “He put a lot of pressure on Robbie, very good gameplan to press Robbie like that and really deflate him. Some people don’t realize how exhausting wrestling can be. And yeah, he [Lawler] may not have gotten taken down in the 18 or 19 tries he [Covington] attempted but to fight the takedown, to get the underhooks and defend, push him away, to really be hesitant to let your hands go because he might get underneath you and the unrelenting pressure he put on him — it was impressive.

I can’t hate on him and act like he didn’t put on a performance. He may not have the most power but you can’t really fault somebody for something they weren’t born with. So he has to throw 600 punches. 600 punches may equal 60 of Robbie’s punches. He kept himself out of harm’s way, he kept mixing it up…it looked like a drill match to be honest. He had a good performance. I think Robbie kind of lost focus in the fight.”

So given his performance over the weekend, who does Woodley think will come out on top between Covington and Usman?

“Very tough, I can’t say one thing,” Woodley explained. “It’s any man’s fight. Neither one of them is known for their punching power. Usman will have a little bit more power, a little bit more relaxation and flow. They both have very strong minds, I don’t think anyone’s going to break in this fight. I don’t know exactly how Usman deals with somebody rattling him…I’m interested to see how he responds to it.”

Woodley Return?

As for Woodley, he could return this year provided it’s the right fight for him. Lawler and Rafael dos Anjos are names he is interested in facing, but if it makes sense for him to wait for the winner of the next title fight, that’s what he’ll do:

I will return later this year for sure,” Woodley added. “…We’ll see. …Physically, I’ll be prepared to fight this year. If it comes down to a point where it makes more sense for me to sit back and spectate and pick up the winner of this next fight [Usman vs. Covington], obviously that’s going to make the most sense.”

Who do you want to see Woodley face next?

Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley believes there’s a double standard when it comes to the infractions of Conor McGregor and Jon Jones.

Jones was recently charged with battery after some allegations from a strip club waitress earlier this month. Although there are no new details or actual evidence, given the light heavyweight champion’s history, it didn’t take long for many to form an opinion about it.

McGregor, meanwhile, has had his share of problems in the past as well, most recently, being under investigation for an alleged sexual assault. Speaking about the latest Jones infraction, Woodley said he’d prefer to wait for the facts. However, he also observed some differences when it comes to McGregor and Jones:

“We gonna act like Conor doesn’t do that every week?” Woodley asked on TMZ (via MMA News). “And we still want to put him on every fight card; he’s the biggest star. The second Jon Jones does something…

I’m defending the fact that we selectively throw people under the bus. Conor has done way worse things than Jon, and he’s glorified and praised as some Scarface of our sport. So I’m not gonna be too hard on Jon (when) I don’t even know the details.”

When it comes to Jones alone, Woodley has called for people to wait on getting all the details first before passing judgement:

“I’m not gonna give him a pass, either, because it ain’t my job to give the pass out,” Woodley added. “All I’m saying is this: Let’s get all the details first, but let’s not forget there’s a lot of bullshit that go on in our sport that we glorify.”

Do you agree with Woodley?

Tyron Woodley went into more detail about why he was pictured with Jorge Masvidal.

Masvidal knocked Ben Askren out earlier this month at UFC 239 and Woodley received a lot of grief for being pictured with “Gamebred” just a few weeks after that. Woodley and Askren, of course, are close friends, so many were shocked to see the former with Masvidal.

Colby Covington and Dillon Danis notably commented on the issue with Woodley clapping back at them right away. And appearing on TMZ, “The Chosen One” went into more detail about it:

“Alright, let’s get this in. Let me do this,” Woodley said. “I’m a part of First Round Management, okay? Jorge Masvidal is also a part of First Round Management, and so is Jon Jones. So surprisingly, me, Jon, and Jorge have some of the same sponsors. So we was doing a video for cbdMD… and then Jorge Masvidal was in a shoot with me. We trained so many years together.

“Now I wasn’t like, ‘yeah, I’m so happy you knocked my guy the fuck out.’ I’m not thinking that. But I’m thinking like, ‘Am I gonna be mean to him?’ No, I got to do a shoot with him for six hours. [I was] respectful. We had a four-to-six hour shoot, we gotta be around each other. I want to have good energy to make it well.

A couple pictures were taken, boom, boom, you guys all got on these shirts, looked dope, let’s get some product placement. But then I didn’t think about it [like] ‘damn, he knocked out my homie.’ And now, everybody on the internet like, ‘Oh, my god. You’re not a good friend…”

What do you make of the situation?
