Josh Koscheck‘s appearance on ESPN Wednesday morning was a good example of the right way for a fighter to sell his upcoming fight to an audience that might be on the fence about watching it, as he promised in a SportsCenter interview to deliver the kind of exciting finish that casual fans are hoping to see when they decide whether to buy a pay-per-view.

“I believe that I’m going to win this fight,” Koscheck said. “I’m going to knock Georges St. Pierre out, either in Round 2 or 3.”

Koscheck has spent plenty of time talking to the MMA media in the lead-up to this fight, but those interviews aren’t as important to the UFC’s bottom line: If you’re an MMA fan, you’re going to buy UFC 124 whether you see a Koscheck interview or not. Much more important is the kind of interview like Koscheck had on SportsCenter, where he was talking to fans who don’t regularly watch the UFC.

First things first: Sean McCorkle did not talk his way into the UFC. He’s heard that version of events floating around the internet and he’d like to clear the air. As much as he’d like it to be the case that his over-the-top online persona got him a UFC contract, he knows it’s more about his fighting ability than his sense of humor, no matter what other people might say.

“I think they mean it as an insult, but I think it’s hilarious,” said McCorkle. “You’re telling me that I’m so talented at talking in interviews that it got me into the UFC? Really? I mean, [UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva told me when I first met him, ‘I just want you to know that we love your internet stuff, but that’s not the reason you’re in the UFC.’ I kind of said, ‘Darn it, I was hoping that it was.'”

But as long as he’s here anyway, he might as well have a little fun. That’s why, ever since he accepted a fight with Dutch heavyweight Stefan Struve at UFC 124 in Montreal, McCorkle’s personal Twitter has featured an almost constant barrage of stinging one-liners aimed directly at Struve.

As fight time nears, Georges St. Pierre usually plays his cards closer and closer to the vest. The UFC welterweight champ has a few well-worn, go-to phrases that usually encapsulate his training camp to interrogators.

That doesn’t make St. Pierre much different than any other fighter, but the consistency of his non-answers for questions relating to his preparation and strategy is often as reliable as a Swiss-made watch.

On a Monday conference call, however, St. Pierre let his guard down for a few moments, supplying reporters and fans with a peek into his preparation for his UFC 124 title defense against Josh Koscheck.
