The last time Jason “Mayhem” Miller and I squared off in a fight prediction contest, we came to an unsatisfying tie over UFC 121. I knew from that moment that we would one day meet again to settle our beef, but I didn’t know when.

But looking at the main event for UFC 129 it occurred to me, there may be no one in the world who is more qualified to break this fight down than Miller, who fought both Jake Shields and Georges St. Pierre.

“It’s true,” Miller sighed when I approached him with the idea. “I guess I am uniquely qualified, since I have been decisioned by both gentlemen.”

And just like that, it was on. Let there be no ties this time around…

TORONTO — One young, athletic champion is at the center of the storm as the UFC takes over the city for its biggest show ever, and the other young, athletic champion is nearly forgotten.

This is Georges St. Pierre‘s world, and wherever you turn, there is something there to remind you of it. There are billboards and commercials, he’s on television and in the newspapers. And when you drive along some streets near the busy Gardiner Expressway, his picture graces UFC 129 banners high atop streetlights.

Close by but seemingly a world away is Jose Aldo, the dynamic Brazilian phenom who also happens to be the UFC featherweight champion and a consensus top five pound-for-pound fighter. In any other MMA universe, someone of that status and caliber couldn’t possibly go unnoticed and unrecognized, but earlier this week, Aldo sat in a press conference for 40 minutes until fielding his first question.

TORONTO — Every once in a while in the fight game, you get a perfectly timed intersection of careers that leads to the two best meeting at their best. We don’t always know it at the time, however. It’s impossible to know the apex of an athlete’s career until he retires and everything can be judged objectively. But it would be hard to imagine that either UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre or challenger Jake Shields isn’t at the top of their game right now.

Between the two, they are a combined 29-1 over their last 30 fights. Since the start of 2005, each has fought 15 times; Shields is unbeaten, St. Pierre lost just once, and later avenged the defeat by dominating Matt Serra in a rematch.

The UFC 129 main event fight clearly features two athletes at the top of their game, and the result could change the way history is viewed.

Those stuffy buzz-kills at the FBI may have ruined everybody’s fun when it comes to online poker, but fortunately there are still online sports bookies handicapping UFC 129 and giving us something to talk about as we twiddle our anxious thumbs on this Friday afternoon.

Let’s take a look at how oddsmakers see the action going down on Saturday, and then speculate irresponsibly as to where they might have gone wrong.
