UFC 132: Wanderlei Silva Is the Wanted Man of the Middleweight Division

Wanderlei Silva is the definition of a legend. From the moment Sandstorm hits, through the loosened wrists and stare from hell, right on into an unleashed fury the likes of which few can match in a ring or cage, Silva will be remembered as the embodiment of all that’s right in competition.

He’s also perhaps the nicest lunatic the world has ever seen, referring to his fans as his “friends” and constantly wearing a smile after years of soccer kicking overmatched opposition senseless.

However, after a lifetime of putting on wars to bring fans out of their seats instead of looking to win on points, many fear that Silva’s best days are behind him. And those who don’t fear the possibility are the ones who salivate at using him as a big-name notch in their belts.

Yoshihiro Akiyama called him out.

Brian Stann gave it a shot.

Michael Bisping wants some more one day.

Chael Sonnen won’t let their war of words die.

Chris Leben called him out, and got him.

Basically anyone who thinks Wandy is chinny and on the downside of his career wants to get in there and tee off in hopes of being able to claim one day that they beat the legend. Bank on it that if this was 2006, none of these men would be so eager to get in there with him.

But that’s not the point.

The point is that the 2011 Axe Murderer has a target on his back, and he still has the spirit that made him great. He has no fear of any of these men, or anyone else, and he could care less which ones he gets or what order he gets them in. He just wants to fight all of them.

Unfortunately, in order to run down that list, Silva needs to focus more on a gameplan and controlled aggression—as he did successfully against Bisping—than on being the man who tore up Pride with flailing limbs and explosive Muay Thai.

Should he ever get Akiyama, it’s a winnable fight, but not by knockout. He needs to fight smart and play the game a little bit, because Akiyama is as durable as anyone and can make you pay for being reckless.

Stann has likely moved out of Silva’s current range after beating Leben, and could be looking at a top ten guy in his next outing. A decisive win over The Crippler might get Wandy that fight, but again, if he doesn’t control his aggression Stann will hurt him. That’s why he called for him in the first place.

The Bisping/Silva feud is done, get over it Mike. It wasn’t that close, and you ended the fight almost unconscious. That’s not rematch material.

Sonnen is a terrible matchup for Silva, someone who can talk enough to get under his skin a little, and an accomplished wrestler with limitless cardio. That fight ends up with Sonnen in Wandy’s guard, Wandy eating elbows and punches tirelessly for 15 minutes, and Sonnen proving he can at least beat someone named Silva.

This weekend against Leben, recklessness will lead to Wandy looking up at the lights. He can’t take shots like he used to, and Leben has dynamite in his hands. Pedal-to-the-metal forward pressure won’t scare Leben, who can take a punch as well as any middleweight in the world, and the risk of a counter left hand can’t be ignored. Fight smart or suffer a debilitating loss as far as upward mobility in the division is concerned.

In the twilight of his career, Wanderlei Silva needs to realize that he’s done enough for his “friends” that they don’t need—or want—to see him going out on his shield every time he fights. Most would prefer he fight slightly more conservatively, control his aggression, be a little evasive, and explode when necessary. There isn’t any need to throw caution to the wind against middle-of-the-road middleweights if getting back into contention is the goal, because he’s earned the right to put winning ahead of entertaining.

Saturday night will be the first test of whether or not Silva has realized that fully. He did a solid job against Bisping, but the margin for error is smaller against the violent Leben. But either way, he’ll leave it all in the cage as he has his entire career, and no one can ask any less of a mixed martial artist.

UFC 133 Fight Card: Is Phil Davis Ready for Rashad Evans?

Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis has lived up to his nickname so far in his MMA career.

Davis is 9-0, (5-0 in the UFC), and holds wins over middleweight stand out Brian Stann and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

Because of his mixture of good wrestling and slick submissions, Davis has become one of the UFC’s fastest rising stars.

Often young fighters will call out tougher competition with the hope of moving up the divisional rankings.

Davis on the other hand has had opportunities come to him.

After originally being booked to Matt Hamill, then Jason Brillz, Davis replaced Tito Ortiz to face Nogueira at UFC Fight Night 24.

Davis got past his biggest test to date, but showed us that he still has some improvements to make.

He will get an even bigger test in competition as he takes on Rashad Evans at UFC 133.

Evans is a former UFC light heavyweight champion who was well on his way to another title fight. Unfortunately for him, his former teammate and UFC champion Jon Jones had to pull out of their fight due to a hand injury.

Instead of waiting for his title shot like he had done for almost a year, Evans decided to take the fight against Davis.

Like Evans, Davis is a good wrestler. But wrestling aside, will Davis have enough tools to be competitive with Evans?

Evans will have much better striking coming into this fight. He will also have experience and knows how to handle pressure in a big fight.

Not only will Davis feel the pressure of being in such a big fight, he will also feel the pressure to perform well in his home state.

Davis is one of the division’s bright young stars. But I believe this will be the fight that he loses and learns from.

UFC 133 Fight Card: Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis, Early Head To Toe Breakdown

Poor, Rashad.

Since losing the light heavyweight championship to Lyoto Machida back in 2009, Rashad Evans has defeated top contenders Thiago Silva and Quinton Jackson.

Evans was supposed to face Mauricio Rua in March for the UFC’s light heavyweight belt, but an injury forced him to withdraw from the bout.

Then, he was supposed to face Jon Jones for the championship at UFC 133, but Jones was forced to drop out of the fight.

Now, Rashad has lost his shot for the title and instead will face Phil Davis.

This is a high risk fight for Rashad. A win will likely earn him the next title shot in the light heavyweight division. However, a loss for Evans would be devastating. Davis looked relatively unimpressive in his last fight with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, so if Rashad loses people will seriously begin to question his place in the division.

For Phil, this is a very low risk fight. He is a replacement fighter, so the UFC will be happy with him for helping them out of a tight spot, regardless of whether he wins or loses.

If Davis does lose, it doesn’t hurt him too much because most people don’t think he is ready for Rashad anyways. If he wins, it’ll catapult him into title contention.

Let’s see how these two stack up…

UFC 133 Preview: Is Yoshihiro Akiyama Fighting for His Job?

In Yoshihiro Akiyama’s short UFC career he has earned a Fight of the Night bonus in every fight.

The only problem is he has gone 1-2, winning a very close fight at UFC 100 and dropping his last two fights.

Akiyama has been entertaining to watch, but entertaining losses can only get you so far.

Akiyama is 13-3 (2) overall in his career. The Japanese star has shown his great chin and ability to dish out shots just as hard as he can take them.

A combination of Akiyama’s cardio and poor planning have been his downfall in the last two fights.

Akiyama opened up strong in both bouts. Akiyama got the better of Chris Leben for much of their fight. Leben took advantage of a gassed Akiyama though, defeating him by submission with seconds left.

Akiyama faced Michael Bisping next, rocking the Brit in the first round. Bisping became more technical in his striking in the next two rounds and won the fight by decision.

Akiyama is never in a boring fight and as one of Japan’s top stars, he is a great asset to the UFC.

But Akiyama will have to do more in order to keep his job.

One step in the right direction would be to defeat his next opponent, Vitor Belfort at UFC 133.

Belfort was the most recent victim of middleweight champion Anderson Silva. A win over Belfort would put Akiyama’s career back on track.

Akiyama will come in highly motivated to win. Not just to keep his job, but as a dedication to the people who have had to suffer because of the terrible earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March.

If the fight is an exciting one and Akiyama loses, I don’t believe he will lose his job just yet. He will be on the chopping block, however, if he can’t turn it around.

Akiyama has international appeal and is an exciting fighter. But seeing him cut may become a reality if he does not win.

UFC 132 Fight Card: Wanderlei Silva Motivated to Return, Praises Chris Leben

Bleacher Report’s Mike Hodges:

After recuperating from an injury that kept him out of action for nearly a year, Wanderlei Silva will return to the Octagon at UFC 132 where he’ll compete against hard-hitting striker Chris Leben.

Called “The Axe Murderer,” Silva is known for his aggressive and relentless approach and will be taking on one of the tougher competitors in the UFC middleweight division during one of the most anticipated match-ups of the year.

While conducting an interview with UFC Latino in Mexico (courtesy of FightersOnly.co.uk), Silva spoke highly of his opponent and said he expects nothing but an aggressive, entertaining fight.

“He is a fighter who comes at you,” Silva said. “He will not run away, he will try to catch me. I like exchanging hits so much and I am sure we will make a great spectacle.”

“If you like an aggressive match with much emotion, watch it because it will be a big show.”
