Strikeforce Dallas: Conor Heun Fights Through Badly Damaged Arm to Gain Victory

Prior to facing Magno Almeida on Saturday, June 18, Conor Heun had not won a fight since October 2008. Granted, he had only fought twice since that win, but both fights ended in decision losses.

If there was a fighter that needed a win on Saturday’s Strikeforce card, it was Heun.

Heun did gain the win (29-28 on all three cards) in a unanimous decision, showing a no-quit attitude and paying a pretty big cost in the process, as his arm appeared to be severely damaged at the end of the fight.

During the second round of the preliminary card fight, Almeida locked on an armbar that looked like it was going to end Heun’s night. Almeida was grimacing as he was doing all he could to force Heun to submit, but Heun refused to go gently into the good night and didn’t tap. Almeida eventually released the hold.

When the third round finished, and and the fighters stood with the referee, Heun could be seen talking to the referee as he held Heun’s right arm, waiting for the decision to be announced.  When the results were read, and the referee raised Heun’s arm, he seemed to visibly wince.

After the fight, a very emotional Heun spoke about the win and how he hoped his actions in the cage could be used as an inspiration. Some pretty good stuff from Heun and well worth watching.

If you didn’t know Conor Heun before this fight, you should now.

UFC 133: Riki Fukuda Forced out of Fight Card Following Car Accident

Japan native UFC fighter Riki Fukuda has been forced out of his scheduled UFC 133 fight against Rafael Natal due to an injury sustained from a recent car accident.

Fukuda reluctantly broke the news on Twitter:

“I had a car accident on 16th of [June]. I broke my left knee and it seems require surgery,” he said.

The 30-year old Fukuda made his MMA debut in 2004 and has amassed a record of 12-3-1 including a victory Murilo “Ninja” Rua, brother of former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

But one of those losses came in his last fight at UFC 127, hosted in Australia. He fought Nick Ring at the event and had seemingly dominated the fight, but somehow lost a decision in what has been called one of the biggest robberies in MMA this year. It was so bad, in fact, that the UFC decided to pay Fukuda his win bonus anyway.

Though news has yet to come down officially from the UFC themselves regarding the injury, Ariel Helwani reported on NBCSports.com that Constantinos Philippou is expected to be Fukuda’s replacement in the bout scheduled for August 6 in Philadelphia, PA.

With the surge in the amount of UFC events over the last few years, one downside is that less and less PPV events are being anchored with a title fight. While the UFC usually does a good job putting together PPV cards worth the price of admission, many fans are feeling a bit slighted.

With that said, fans of title fights may be in store for an embarrassment or riches during the second half of 2011 where, if the stars all align, we could bear witness to all seven UFC belts being defended. Four title fights are already on the books, with one being tentatively booked, while three others are likely to happen as long as all the fighters in question heal from their respective injuries.

Lets take a look shall we.

UFC News: New York Unlikely to Pass Legislation Bill to Sanction MMA

Bleacher Report’s Mike Hodges:

Despite the increasing amount of momentum built up, it appears the state of New York still refuses to sanction mixed martial arts.

The NYDailyNews.com reports that Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver announced that the UFC would not make its way into New York due to the lack of support behind the promotion.

“There does not appear to be widespread support in the Assembly for this legislation,” Silver said.

The recent announcement puts a damper onto the plans of potentially hosting an event, and does anything but create more exposure for the sport. The legislation bill recently passed the Assembly Tourism Committee, as well as the Senate, and it is expected to be go through the Assembly Codes Committee next week.

Regardless of Silver’s decision, there is still a growing support for MMA to be sanctioned by chamber members.

“Every other state seems to think this is a good idea,” Codes Committee Chairman Joseph Lentol said.
