Alexander GustafssonFresh off his biggest victory, 24-year-old light-heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson has agreed to face rugged veteran Vladimir Matyushenko at December’s UFC 141.

The UFC confirmed the bout’s booking.

At August’s UFC 133, Gustafsson captured his most important victory to date when he defeated Matt Hamill via second-round TKO.

It was the third straight win and third straight finish for the Swedish star, who improved to 12-1 overall, and shortly after the bout, Hamill announced his retirement.

Ironically, Gustafsson had originally been scheduled to face Matyushenko that night until an injury to the Belarusian derailed the fight. It turns out the delay was temporary, with the clash only pushed back a few months.

Matyushenko, one of the UFC’s elder statesmen at 40 years old, has earned back-to-back victories, with TKO stoppages of Alexandre Ferreira and Jason Brilz.

UFC 141 goes down on December 30 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In the main event, newly signed heavyweight star Alistair Overeem takes on former UFC champ Brock Lesnar.

UFC 141 on New Year’s weekend is stacking up to be quite the card to end the year.

On Wednesday, UFC officials announced that knockout artist Alexander Gustafsson (12-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) meets Vladimir Matyushenko (25-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) in a light heavyweight matchup.

Gustafsson recently outclassed Matt Hamill at UFC 133 in August and prior to that victory, he defeated Cyrille Diabete and James Te Huna by submission.

Gustafsson, who sets up camp at Alliance MMA under the tutelage of Eric Del Fierro became the first fighter to stop Hamill within two rounds.

Matyushenko has won back-to-back fights and most dispatched of Jason Brilz in just 20 seconds back in April at UFC 128.

Gustafsson and Matyushenko were originally slated to fight at UFC 133, but an injury suffered to Matyshenko delayed the bout. Now, they’ll meet to close out the year and the winner will enter 2012 with a solid amount of momentum.

Former heavyweight champion and megastar Brock Lesnar will welcome Alistair Overeem to the Octagon in the night’s headliner.

The MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas hosts the night’s action.

MMA: 5 Reasons Why Brock Lesnar Will Never Be Champion Again

Brock Lesnar is the most successful PPV magnate acquisition in the history of MMA, but his second quest for UFC glory will never be achieved again.

When Brock Lesnar burst on to the MMA scene in 2007 he not only brought with him the pomp and pageantry synonymous with the WWE but also the fans in their thousands.

Initially the transition from WWE to MMA was going according to the script:

He submitted Min-Soo Kim via punches. The Lesnar express train was derailed momentarily when he came up against Frank Mir, losing via kneebar submission.

After that minor hiccup the Lesnar express was back on track, he won a unanimous decision against Heath Herring and in only his fourth fight as an MMA pro and in only his third fight for the UFC he defeated Randy Couture via TKO to become the UFC heavyweight champion.

The Lesnar express made a brief stop at UFC 100 where he would avenge his only loss thus far. In the rematch, Lesnar annihilated Mir winning via TKO. At that point it seemed to the MMA world that the Lesnar express was unstoppable—they were wrong.

After a brief illness with mononucleosis and diverticulitis Lesnar went head to head with Shane Carwin in his first defense of the title. It wasn’t all plain sailing and the Lesnar express almost got derailed for a second time, but he weathered Carwin’s early storm winning via arm triangle choke.

The Lesnar express was gradually gathering speed—next stop would be at UFC 121 where he would throw down with Cain Velasquez and ultimately lose his UFC belt. The smaller Velasquez violated Lesnar in a way he’d never experienced before—it was sheer brutality. The Lesnar express was now on standby.

His proposed fight with Junior Dos Santo was called off, as he again succumbed to another bout of diverticulitis. The Lesnar express is now slated for the tracks at UFC 141 where he’ll meet ex Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem.

What Lesnar has achieved to date in MMA most fighters wouldn’t achieve in a lifetime. But I believe the Lesnar express has come to a permanent halt in regards to the UFC heavyweight championship.

And these are the reasons why:

The hype surrounding UFC 141 just got even bigger.

When heavyweight giants Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem square off in the main event, they will be competing for more than just Octagon supremacy. It was learned earlier this week that the winner will receive a future title shot against either Cain Velasquez or Junior dos Santos.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the news and is intrigued at idea of seeing both heavyweights compete, especially the newly-acquired Overeem.

“I’m excited to see what Alistair Overeem has,” the UFC boss told MMAWeekly.com.

“It’s going to be a really good gauge to find out where Alistair really sits in the heavyweight division.”

Overeem served as the former Strikeforce champion while competing under the brand, and was participating in the promotion’s Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament before a toe injury forced him out of action. Shortly after, the Dutch striker’s contract negotiations and back-and-forth battle with management led to his departure from the company.

Lesnar, meanwhile, has been out of action since last year, as he battled his second bout with diverticulitis. He was last seen in the Octagon at UFC 122, where he lost the heavyweight title to Cain Velasquez. The former WWE superstar has been a huge draw for the UFC and has brought a lot of financial success.

The inclusion of Overeem has added more competition to the UFC heavyweight division. This fight will undoubtedly be the biggest challenge in the careers of both fighters. For either Lesnar or Overeem, the opportunity to earn another title shot might not happen again, and the chances of staying in contention might get slimmer and slimmer.

Right now, there is no more important bout for either of them than what lies ahead at UFC 141.

Another busy week for the world of MMA has concluded.

A current UFC champion announced an injury that may keep him out for the remainder of the year, a former UFC champion will welcome a former Strikeforce champion to the promotion, and another former UFC champ will battle a legend of the sport.

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva recently revealed that he suffered a shoulder injury prior to his UFC 134 title defense against Yushin Okami.  Silva defended his belt, but it looks like he may be forced out of action as a result.

Vitor Belfort announced his return to action against former Strikeforce middleweight title holder Cung Le at UFC 139 in November.

Former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz will lock horns with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 140 in December.

Alistair Overeem’s goal of becoming a UFC champion will begin on December 30, when he meets Brock Lesnar in the main event at UFC 141. Overeem, widely considered to be one of the best heavyweights outside of the UFC, will have a durable opponent to face in Lesnar.

“The Demolition Man” recently spoke to Shoot Media about his bout with Lesnar and his thoughts on the former UFC heavyweight champion.

“Brock (Lesnar) is a very big guy, a very dangerous guy,” Overeem said.

“I’m happy we came to this agreement. I’m excited to fight Brock.”

The heavyweight bout will mark the UFC debut of the Dutch kickboxer, who has been an after thought in the UFC’s plans for a few years following numerous attempts to sign former heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko

Overeem’s recent years of competing in organizations such as K-1 and DREAM, have allowed him to remain active and evolve as a mixed martial artist. But it is his bout with Lesnar that will be his first true test of competition in recent memory. Critics are quick to point out the lack of competition Overeem has faced throughout his tenure as a heavyweight fighter, which has always questioned his credibility.

However a win over Lesnar will erase the doubts of legitimacy and move Overeem one step closer to a title shot. Overeem gave his prediction on his bout with Lesnar and said he sees himself coming out on top.

‘This fight is not going to go the distance, that one thing is for certain,” he said.

“Someone is going to get beat up. And I’m going to do my best to make sure it’s not me.”
