Despite his myriad of accolades, record breaking title reign and extraordinary ability inside the Octagon, Anderson Silva wants the fans to understand that, underneath it all, he’s just a regular guy—at least according to his latest commercial endeavor.

Starring in the latest UFC on FOX promotional ad, embedded above, the UFC’s middleweight champion humorously uses his martial arts talents to help out in everyday, domestic situations.

This promo is just the latest addition to Silva’s commercial résumé, appearing in many comedic ads in Brazil for companies such as Burger King and Ford.

Check out the pound-for-pound MMA champion “offering a kiss” in his ad for Ford that debuted last year here.

Outside of the acting realm, Silva has a more serious challenge ahead of him as his rematch with outspoken nemesis Chael Sonnen was officially slated for UFC 147.

The bout, scheduled for June 23, will take place at the Joao Havelange Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In their first match, Sonnen took the champion to the brink of defeat, brutally beating Silva down for almost five full rounds at UFC 117 in August of 2010.  In a last ditch effort, Silva was able to secure a triangle choke/armbar combination to submit Sonnen and retain his middleweight crown.

‘UFC 147: Sonnen vs. Silva’ Confirmed for June 23rd at ‘Engenhão’; Chael Unleashes Latest Verbal Assault

(Fans outside the Engenhão await their national hero.)

The UFC has confirmed the date and venue for UFC 147: Silva vs. Sonnen 2, slating it for June 23rd at Estádio Olímpico João Havelange in Rio de Janeiro. Known to the locals as “Engenhão,” the multi-use stadium seats nearly 47,000 people, and is the home field for the Botafogo soccer team. Engenhão will host the athletics competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

With the main-event building steam, Chael Sonnen has gotten a head-start on his trash talk, responding to Anderson Silva‘s recent claim that Chael should quit talking and start training. His latest promo clip is vintage Sonnen. Here’s a taste:

I’m not fighting you in Brazil, I’m not fighting you in Chicago, I’m not fighting you in Florida. I’m fighting you in the Octagon. And when you get in there and I get in there, I’m gonna stomp you this time the same as I did last time. You can complain about your rib. I’m sure your rib *did* hurt. Your rib is inside of a coward. That’s the problem your rib’s got. It’s got the same problem your hands and feet have — they’re attached to *you*, dummy! I’m gonna be attached to you too, for 25 minutes or until you give up.”

UFC 147: Is It Safe for Chael Sonnen to Fight in Brazil?

The middleweight championship rematch between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen has been rumored to go down in Brazil for quite some time. However, now that it’s officially announced, the MMA world is not only eagerly anticipating the match-up, but also the crowd reaction that awaits Sonnen.

The self-proclaimed “UFC champion” has verbally gone after the entire country of Brazil on numerous occasions, dropping pipe bombs such as:

“Greetings from Sao Paulo! I’m learning the language: breakdancing in the Special Olympics is called Capoiera and cocaine is called brunch”

“Brazil likes to boast that it’s the power seat of MMA, yet it’s so-called champions bow to the man behind ‘Under Siege 2.’…….. Classy”

Naturally, most Brazilians haven’t exactly found this humorous, and due to the country’s unfortunate history of riots during sporting events, the UFC is going to have to dramatically up security around the challenger.

While there is little doubt that the UFC is going to go above and beyond to protect its fighters, especially in a potentially hostile environment, safety is going to be a major concern for this event.

With the UFC growing more and more popular and a huge contract with FOX still getting off the ground, there is no room for any incidents that could give the sport a black eye. If Sonnen is indeed attacked, then the progress the sport has made over the past eight years will take a major blow.

This isn’t a knock on the Brazilian crowds, as we all know that most incidents occur due to just a few people acting foolish, but the risk is real and it needs to be taken seriously.

I hope there is no reason for fans to be concerned and the event goes off without a hitch. However, Sonnen’s lack of respect towards the Brazilian crowd makes this event feel a lot more risky then it should.

Why Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen Is the Biggest Rematch in UFC History

Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck, Super Bowl weekend, the biggest rematch in the history of the business. I’m calling you out Silva, but we’re upping the stakes. I beat you, you leave the division. You beat me, I will leave the UFC forever.” These were the words of Chael Sonnen in a post-fight interview after his UFC 136 victory over Brian Stann.

He didn’t have the date right, he has since backed off the “loser leaves town” premise and obviously Anderson Silva by no means “sucks,” but Sonnen did get one thing right—Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen will be the biggest rematch in the history of the UFC.

Rather than meeting on Super Bowl weekend, it appears the rematch will be a summer blockbuster. According to UFC.com the date and venue have now been set and we will finally see the rematch we’ve been waiting for on June 23 at Joao Havelange Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The massive soccer stadium seats approximately 47,000 but the live attendance record set by UFC 129 of over 55,000 is expected to be eclipsed by the landmark bout. According to Dana White we can expect this to be the event of the year:

“This will be the biggest sporting event of the year. Bigger than the NFL, the NBA, you name it – UFC 147 will be the biggest.  The whole world wants to see this fight between Silva and Sonnen.  We are broadcast in over 150 countries in 22 languages in half a billion homes.  Wherever those fans are, they are going to be watching this fight.”

Let’s take a look at this match up that is now almost two years in the making and why it will be the biggest rematch in the history of the business.

Wanderlei Silva: ‘I’m from the Streets and Vitor Belfort Lives in Disneyland’

According to Fightersonlymag.com, Wanderlei Silva says he’s from the streets and fellow Brazilian Vitor Belfort lives in Disneyland.

“Each has his own opinion, each can express his own point of view. But I think he lives in his own world. In his own mind he is right, but for me he lives in Disneyland. But I was born in the real world, I’m from the streets,” he said.

“The guy is a lion when he is doing the hitting – but when he is hit, he shows the fear on his face. I will beat him and I will do it with heart.”

That last time these two met was back in 1998 at UFC Brazil—Belfort was 21 at the time and Silva was 22. Also, both combatants were each 5-1 (all 10 victories coming via stoppage) in their budding mixed martial arts careers.

The fight itself lasted all but 44 seconds of the opening stanza, as the “Phenom” Belfort decimated “The Axe Murderer” in brutal fashion.

Fast forward 14 years, and the pair are set to do it all again, but first they have to complete their stint as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil reality television series.

However, Belfort (21-9 MMA, 10-5 UFC) has already stoked the flames by taking a swipe at Silva’s supposed fragile chin and his fighting style, which he believes has failed to evolve.

“If he does that (trade with me) I’ll break him again. He no longer has the chin to trade with me. Tell him to change strategies or it’s going to be another knockout,” Belfort said.

The rematch is scheduled to take place at UFC 147 at the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in front an expected 80,000 strong crowd.

While Silva (34-11-1-1NC, MMA, 4-6 UFC) is from the town Curitiba, Belfort hails from Rio, and as a result is expected to garner most of crowd’s support, however, Silva believes he’ll have the backing of the Rio contingent as well.

“The cariocas (Rio people) love me. The crowd will all root for me. I am a beloved athlete all over the world. People want to see the show, a good fight and this is what we will do. I am very happy to fight in Rio and I will dedicate the victory to all the people from Rio,” Silva said.

UFC Confirms Silva vs. Sonnen Rematch Will Be Held in Front of 80,000 Fans

The main event between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen is close to being finalized.

The UFC made an announcement regarding UFC 147 earlier today during a press conference and said the event is to be held inside a soccer stadium in Rio de Janeiro, expected to hold approximately 80,000 seats.

It was officially announced shortly thereafter on the company’s Twitter page.

“Dana says the Chael/Anderson rematch is going to be in a soccer stadium in Rio that holds 80K,” the UFC confirmed.

The UFC came across some legal troubles in their attempt to initially host the event in Sao Paulo, so they are currently looking at other venues. Should UFC 147 be able to locate the right stadium for the event, it would surpass the previous UFC attendance record, set at UFC 129 which was held at Rodgers Centre in Toronto. The current record is 55,721.

Silva and Sonnen are slated to meet in the main event, while the co-main event will see opposing coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter: Brasil,” Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva square off their own rematch.

No official date has been confirmed as of yet, but the event is planned for June.
