UFC 153: Jon Fitch Is Overrated and Erick Silva Is the Real Deal

Jon Fitch has been a contender in the UFC’s most competitive division for quite some time. He may have found himself unable to create a strong fanbase due to a fighting style that lulls many fans to sleep, but his skills are very impressive.

But while he does sport an impressive 13-2-1 record in the UFC, he doesn’t have as many wins over high-level competition as one might expect.

Fitch’s two biggest wins came over Thiago Alves. His next best wins were unanimous decision wins over Mike Pierce and Paulo Thiago, along with a split decision win over Diego Sanchez.

These are not easy fighters to outperform, but they are far from the elite of the current welterweight division.

In his last two fights—bouts against BJ Penn and Johny Hendricks—he has come up short. He fought to a majority draw against the undersized former lightweight and welterweight champion before suffering a brutal knockout loss 20 seconds into his fight with Hendricks.

These are much more proven fighters than Erick Silva, and it might be easy to dismiss these performances when considering Fitch’s chances against a largely untested prospect.

But it’s important to understand why he didn’t win these matches. He couldn’t beat Penn largely because he was unable to maintain top control for more than 30 seconds at a time in the first two rounds of their match. Only after Penn was horribly gassed was Fitch able to hold him down and clearly win a round.

Against Johny Hendricks, he took a clean straight left that hurt him badly. Hendricks is not lacking in power, but one can’t help but speculate over Fitch’s ability to take damage.

His inability to hold athletic grapplers down, alongside his questionable ability to take damage, could spell serious trouble against one of the division’s most promising prospects.

Erick Silva is a young and athletic Brazilian fighter who always looks to finish his opponents. It’s true he hasn’t beaten a top 20 welterweight in the UFC. In fact, everyone he has beaten in the UFC has subsequently been released.

But there’s no denying that he’s a nasty striker with good takedown defense. I speculate that training with the likes of Junior dos Santos and José Aldo will have helped improve both of these strengths considerably since he has last fought.

I have no doubt that Fitch has the potential to beat Silva. Silva has not faced a fighter at all comparable to Fitch. But given shortcomings in his recent matches, it is hard to trust Fitch to hold down his opponent for long enough to avoid a violent knockout loss.

Stephan Bonnar will enter the cage tomorrow night to meet his most skilled opponent ever.

Anderson Silva hasn’t tasted defeat in well over six years and brings more to the table than any individual in which Bonnar has ever tangled with. He will be forced to dig deep in order to pull off what would be considered one of the greatest upsets in UFC history.

With an impressive 32-4 professional record, Anderson Silva has looked all but invincible since joining the UFC ranks.

With an almost unimaginable UFC record of 15-0, Silva has held firm in his clutch of the middleweight title for (almost exactly) six years, and he’s mixed things up a bit in the process, dispatching light heavyweights James Irvin and former champion Forrest Griffin.

Bonnar hasn’t shown half that promise inside the last half decade.

I’ll support that claim by putting things in perspective: In the time frame in which Silva has amassed his gaudy 15-0 record, Bonnar has put together five wins against five losses. He was beaten once in that specific stretch by Forrest Griffin, the same man who succumbed to Silva’s strikes inside of four minutes.

So why would anyone possibly believe Bonnar has any chance in this fight? We’re about to learn a few things about Stephan Bonnar that should probably already seem apparent.

Bonnar’s been around the block as a professional, fighting a total of 22 times.

He’s tangled with some serious competition throughout his career, having collided with the aforementioned Griffin on two occasions (neither fight yielded a nod in Bonnar’s favor), coming up short (ultimately due to a cut) against Lyoto Machida, taking current light heavyweight champion Jon Jones to a decision (in a losing bid) and toppling rising prospect Igor Pokrajac and the resurgent Krzysztof Soszynski.

He’s proven his worth as a professional athlete.

He’s proven he fears no man.

Bonnar has proven himself a diverse finisher, with 10 of his 15 wins coming via stoppage (seven of which ended in submission). But beyond that, he’s proven a profoundly durable competitor. Tomorrow night, Stephan Bonnar will teach some, and remind others, that he’s one of the most buoyant fighters in the 205-pound division.

The guy isn’t going anywhere, plain and simple. Regardless of whom he fights, he shows up to do just that: fight.

Anderson Silva isn’t likely to break Bonnar’s will.

He may tear his face to shreds, prompting intervention from the referee and cage-side physicians, but the chances of a Silva’s previous bouts.

Bonnar’s ability to take a punch has been tested time and again, and he’s passed every test with flying colors. Outside of two stoppages via cut, Bonnar has never been stopped. He’ll likely provide another spirited performance, so expect to learn a bit more about how big “The American Psycho’s” will and desire to win is.

Beyond the benefit of experience, a well-rounded attack and extreme pliability within the confines of the cage, expect to be schooled in the realm of pure strength.

Bonnar is a huge light heavyweight.

In fact, he could easily be considered one of the largest 205 pounders competing today. Strength could easily play a factor, and if Bonnar can utilize his size advantage, he pressure and wear down Silva. If anyone can impose a top-heavy game, or bully Silva against the cage, it’s likely Stephan Bonnar.

What will unfold tomorrow night remains a mystery at this point, but Stephan Bonnar is likely to teach a few naysayers a thing or two. Never count out the underdog, never underestimate a man’s will to win and always recognize Bonnar for what he is: a massive light heavyweight with the skill set to possibly (I stress the word possibly) hand Anderson Silva his first loss in more than half a decade.

This fight will ultimately determine whether or not Stephan Bonnar is as tough as he’s been billed. Past performances seem to be evidence enough, but the picture can be skewed when we’re talking about a confrontation with Anderson Silva.

My bet is that Stephan Bonnar proves a whole lot of naysayers wrong; even if Stephan comes up short, I expect a very spirited effort from Bonnar.

Silva vs. Bonnar: Why Every MMA Fan Should Watch UFC 153

It may not be the fight card fans want but UFC 153 could be a lot worse.

What we thought was going to be Frankie Edgar making his featherweight debut by challenging champion Jose Aldo has turned into what could be another Anderson Silva beat down on a light heavyweight fighter.

Yes Silva is 2-0 at light heavyweight and he embarrassed both James Irvin and Forrest Griffin in those fights.

But Stephan Bonnar is different. He has never been knocked out or submitted. When he goes out, he always puts everything on the line.

While many are banking on a spectacular Silva knockout, the fight is being hyped as if Bonnar has a chance to score what should become the biggest upset in MMA history.

That alone is not enough to get fans interested in tomorrow’s fights, though.

Here is why MMA fans should be tuned in for UFC 153.

UFC 153 Fight Card: Is Glover Teixeira More Than Just Hype?

With a record of 18-2, 16 straight wins, 11 knockouts and five submissions, it would seem that UFC light heavyweight Glover Teixeira is on his way to title contention.

The one thing that is missing from Teixeira’s record though is a win over a top-10 caliber fighter.

Teixeira has defeated fighters who have had short stints in the UFC including Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Marvin Eastman

Teixeira also holds victories over TUF season three finalist Ed “Short Fuse” Herman and former UFC heavyweight champ Ricco Rodriguez.

Aside from training under the great Chuck Liddell, it seems like the only thing Teixeira has on his side is the UFC hype machine.

Dana White has been high on Teixeira since he joined the UFC this year.

It’s not hard to understand why.

Teixeira has great knockout power and has proved to be just as dangerous on the ground.

But all of Teixeira’s hype has has not helped him gain a top light heavyweight fighter.

After handing Kyle Kingsbury his first submission loss in his UFC debut, Teixeira was going to meet Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

But Rua turned down the fight.

Teixeira was then set to meet Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 153, but injury forced Jackson out of the bout.

The UFC tried to get yet another former champion, Rashad Evans, to step in, but Evans too turned the fight down.

Now Teixeira is matched up against another fighter in Fabio Maldonado, who is not a top 10 fighter.

This is a fight that Teixeira is supposed to win thanks to the hype he has coming into this fight.

But a loss will send the 32-year-old Brazilian’s hype train crashing down.

Teixeira has some impressive wins and thus far deserves some hype.

But until he faces and defeats a top light heavyweight, it will be hard to say that he is more than just that—hype.
