Barnburner Alert: Rafael Dos Anjos vs. Rustam Khabilov Booked for UFC 170 in February

(When Keeping it Real Sarcastically Slow-Clapping Goes Wrong. Photo via Getty.)

After his promotional debut at UFC 91 ended in the most hellacious uppercut KO defeat of all time, it was generally assumed that Rafael Dos Anjos would retire from MMA and spend the rest of his life feeding bread crumbs to pigeons on a park bench while sipping broccoli puree through a straw. But lo, Dos Anjos would rise from the proverbial ashes two fights later, picking up a decision win over Rob Emerson at UFC 103. In the time since, he has been lawn-chairing motherfuckers left and right, compiling an astounding 8-2 record including a dominant decision win over Donald Cerrone at Fight Night 27 back in August.

While many of us expected Dos Anjos — who is currently riding a 5-fight win streak in the UFC’s most stacked division — to receive a top 10 opponent in his next bout, Fox Sports is reporting that Dos Anjos and Russian suplex machine Rustam Khabilov have verbally agreed to meet at UFC 170: Scratch That on February 22nd.

Khabilov exploded onto the scene back in December of 2012, suplexing the ever-loving shit out of Vinc Pichel at the TUF 16 Finale. “Tiger” followed the victory with a first round TKO via takedown-induced thumb injury over Yancy Medeiros (YAAAANCY!!) at UFC 159 and most recently outgunned former Strikeforce title challenger Jorge Masvidal in a FOTN affair at Fight for the Troops 3.

A sure to be barnburner if there ever was one, Taters. Who do you like?

Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira No Longer Headlining UFC 170 in Las Vegas

That sure didn’t take long.

Less than 24 hours after the date for the light heavyweight title showdown between Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira was officially announced for UFC 170 on Feb. 22 in Las Vegas, the matchup has been scrapped and will now get pushed back to some time later in 2014.

Speaking to the media following Thursday’s press conference for UFC 167, Dana White announced the title tilt was no longer happening at UFC 170 due to Jones pulling out, and a new main event bout would be sought for the card. White also speculated the fight could be rescheduled for a potential date in March, but nothing was set in stone at this time.

White’s news on Thursday marks the second time the fight between Jones and Teixeira has been nixed. They were originally slated to square off in the main event of UFC 169 set for Super Bowl weekend in Newark, N.J., but Jones needed more time to recover from his hectic back-and-forth battle with Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165.

While the Newark card’s Feb. 1 date wasn’t enough time for the pound-for-pound great to recover and get a full camp in, apparently the Feb. 22 slot for UFC 170 provided the ideal timeline for the 26-year-old champion to get everything in order.

That certainly doesn’t appear to be the case with Jones pulling out of the fight, and no information has been released in regard to the condition that forced the decision.

Jones is coming off his record-setting sixth defense of his light heavyweight crown in a “Fight of the Year”-worthy performance at UFC 165 in September. As for Teixeira, the Brazilian powerhouse has won five consecutive fights since joining the UFC in 2012, with his most recent showing resulting in an impressive first-round knockout over former TUF winner Ryan Bader at Fight Night 28.

Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira Confirmed Scratched From UFC 170, Feb. 22nd in Las Vegas [UPDATED, WTF]

(Damn. Even his rope is fabulous. / Photo via GQ)

UPDATE: Uh…just kidding. MMAJunkie reports that the Jones vs. Teixeira fight will *not* take place at UFC 170, as Jones will be unavailable for an undisclosed reason. This is the second time that this shit has happened.

The previously announced light-heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and challenger Glover Teixeira will headline UFC 170, scheduled for February 22nd at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The date and venue were announced on yesterday’s edition of UFC Tonight.

Jones is coming off his record-setting sixth title-defense, which came in a squeaker against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 in September. The hard-slugging Teixeira is riding one of the longest win streaks in the sport — 20 straight victories, unbroken by draws or no-contests — and TKO’d Ryan Bader in September to pick up his fifth win in the UFC.

UFC 170 marks the UFC’s second pay-per-view event scheduled for February 2014, and means that three of the UFC’s nine titles will be up for grabs that month, including the bantamweight and featherweight title fights slated for UFC 169 on February 1st. And of course, the Machida vs. Mousasi fight will also take place that month in Brazil. Rest up now, fight fans.

Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira Set for UFC 170 in February

The original date on their light heavyweight showdown may have been scrapped, but it looks like Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira finally have a dance card to prepare for at UFC 170.

As announced on Wednesday’s edition of UFC Tonight, the battle for the 205-pound title will headline a card that is set to take place on February 22 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

While the tilt was originally slated to go down on the UFC’s annual Super Bowl weekend card at UFC 169 in Newark, N.J., on Feb. 1, the light heavyweight title bout has been pushed back to later in the month when the organization returns to Las Vegas for the first time in 2014.

Pound-for-pound great Jones is coming off of the closest contest battle of his career after he edged out Swedish striker Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 in September. The back-and-forth affair has been deemed an “instant classic” and marked the sixth consecutive successful title defense of the 26-year-old champion’s reign, making him the most dominant champion in the history of the light heavyweight division.

The Brazilian powerhouse will be looking to end that run when he gets his long-awaited shot at the 205-pound strap at UFC 170. Since joining the UFC in 2012, Teixeira has collected five consecutive victories, with four of his five wins coming by way of stoppage. He looked lights-out in his last showing as he knocked out former TUF winner Ryan Bader in the first round of their tilt at Fight Night 28 back in September.

The victory over Bader marked Teixeira’s place as the official No. 1 contender to the light heavyweight crown, and after jumping over a few scheduling hurdles, he finally has a set date for his showdown with Jones.
