The UFC is not the only one gearing up for UFC 189. Brazilian TV station Globo is jumping on board with their own early trailer (h/t Reddit)—and it’s awesome.

The UFC debuted its spectacular feature trailer at UFC 187. It marked a jump up in the UFC’s production value and showed how much effort is going into the promotion of the much-anticipated Conor McGregor vs. Jose Aldo featherweight title tilt.

Aldo and McGregor have already been on a world press tour that got confrontational when McGregor snatched Aldo’s title at a press conference.

Globo took its trailer the route of Street Fighter.

Aldo is featured knocking out two fictional characters, Sylvester Sinistro and Chuck Brutus, before facing McGregor. Bruce Buffer also makes an appearance in the 16-bit promo video. The video game-inspired promo makes us all want to press “start” on the controller so we can watch this fight as soon as possible.

Fans of the Street Fighter series are probably searching for their games and blowing the dust off the cartridges. When Aldo and McGregor step inside the cage, we may see a Hadoken from one or both of the elite featherweight fighters. They are that dynamic.

Between the UFC and Globo, it is clear UFC 189 is shaping up to be the year’s biggest card to date. There is tremendous buzz around this fight. McGregor has captivated fans around the globe, and he is the perfect villain to go up against the dominant Aldo.

The boisterous Irishman has backed up every word he has said to date.

What makes it even better is the way their styles match up. It should make for an exciting main event. It will cap off another fantastic UFC fight card as UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler defends his title against Rory MacDonald in the co-main event of the evening.

This event could do huge numbers if this sort of promotional push continues.

How much more fun could the lead-in to this fight get? A wild press tour, two excellent trailers and McGregor had his six-part documentary series air stateside on Fox Sports 1. And we are still more than a month away from all the action.

UFC 189 will take place in Las Vegas during International Fight Week on July 11. Bleacher Report will continue to keep you up to date on the entire card in the coming weeks and months.

UFC Debuts Spectacular Trailer for Upcoming Aldo-McGregor UFC 189 Main Event

UFC 189 is going to be the event of the summer.

Did you think the UFC was going to return to lackluster PPV events after Saturday’s stacked UFC 187? The July pay-per-view is arguably better than what you were just witness to this past weekend. It, too, includes two title fights.

Robbie Lawler defends the welterweight gold against Rory MacDonald in the co-main event, but the fight everyone awaits is the featherweight title tilt. Conor McGregor challenges longtime champion Jose Aldo for the top prize at 145-pounds.

McGregor has ascended to being one of the brightest stars in the MMA world. He is a big draw. McGregor‘s destruction of Dennis Siver broke Fox Sports 1’s ratings record. It peaked at over three million viewers. That is a monster rating for Fox Sports 1. That fight was the final piece to the puzzle to put him opposite Aldo.

Aldo has dominated this division. His stiffest test was his last fight against Chad Mendes when the two went toe-to-toe for five rounds. At the end of the day, Aldo remained champion with a second victory over Mendes. McGregor is the only fighter in the top five that Aldo has not beaten.

Why is this fight so highly anticipated?

McGregor. Plain and simple. He is an enigma. So charismatic, and so talented. He backs up what he says. His size and talents also make him a legitimate threat to topple Aldo off the mountain. McGregor shies away from no one, including Aldo. After defeating Siver, McGregor hopped out of the cage and got in his face. Aldo was unflinching.

The UFC knows what kind of fight it has on its hand. Thus, we get a stellar trailer to help get the promotion for the event underway.

UFC President Dana White wants this fight to be everything that Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao was not, per MMA Junkie. This trailer has already topped the one released for that fight. It shows the UFC has improved in their ability to craft interesting videos for fights they truly care about.

The UFC used 187 as its platform to release the 189 trailer. The hype had already begun thanks to McGregor and his legion of fans, but now the push is gearing up for an all-out blitz. This is a great trailer that fight fans can watch over and over until the actual fight day arrives.

UFC 189 takes place during International Fight Week on July 11 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Bleacher Report will keep you up-to-date on everything surrounding this stacked event in the days and weeks to come.

Is Tim Means in over His Head Against Matt Brown?

Tim Means will take a step up in the welterweight division when he meets No. 5-ranked Matt Brown at UFC 189.

Will jumping into a fight against a top-five opponent put Means in over his head? No, I don’t think so.

It’s understandable why that thought may creep into your minds. Means has had the chance on several occasions to make a statement at both 155 and 170, but he has come up short each time. He lacks a signature win over a top-level opponent. So it’s fair to suggest that Means dove into the deep end too quickly in accepting a fight with a top-five opponent.

For many fighters, it is best to work their way up the ranks slowly. Top 15, top 10 and then top five. But Means can make this jump because he is a crafty veteran who has fought legit competition. This won’t be a monumental leap for Means.

The Dirty Bird has been on fire since returning to the 170-pound division. He is 6-1 with four straight wins. He has a fan-pleasing style that invites gritty exchanges, and he takes full advantage of it. The matchup with Brown is one that could easily steal Fight of the Night, and it’s winnable for Means.

Brown and Means are very similar. Brown worked his way up the ranks after a rough stint from 2010 to 2011. Starting in 2012, he put together seven consecutive wins. That stretch moved him into a title eliminator against Robbie Lawler.

After dropping that fight, he took on Johny Hendricks in another losing effort. Brown received his adulation in part because his style was so exciting. However, it was not a seven-fight win streak over seven elite talents. It was a win streak of impressive finishes.

Brown earned his standing in the division, but it is slightly inflated.

Means’ skill set matches up well with Brown’s. He has a dynamic striking game with excellent elbows in tight and a solid ground game, should Brown try to take the fight to the canvas. Brown’s propensity to engage in a brawl should give Means opportunities to score on foot.

Brown loves to brawl, but where he may have the advantage is on the ground.

He may also have a slight overall advantage, but nothing that should make Means a massive underdog. It is a winnable fight for Means, and one that could move him into the top 10 in this division. It’s a big fight for this weight class.

If this was a fight against Hendricks, then Means would be out of his depth—at least where he stands today. But against Brown, it is a fight that makes sense.

Styles make fights. Brown is not a defensive genius. He gets hit. That bodes well for Means’ chances.

It’s a bit too far out to side with either fighter, but this matchup is closer than the rankings suggest.

This is undoubtedly a step up in competition, but Means is not in over his head against Brown.

Ronda Rousey or Conor McGregor: Who’s the UFC’s Most Important Star?

Drawing power is a major point of success in today’s combat-sports landscape. The Floyd Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao fight proves just how important stars are at this point in time. With that in mind, the Ultimate Fighting Championship continues to work to build their roster big names. Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor are two of the front-runners in that race. However, Rousey should be considered their most important star at this time.

The most important point to recognize is that the UFC needs as many headline-grabbers as possible. The more individuals on their payroll who can capture the attention of both the sports world and mainstream public are worth every penny. In that regard, Rousey is firmly the leader that the UFC needs to continue pushing to the forefront.

Make no mistake about it: Conor McGregor has built himself into a star. The Irish competitor has been the center of much attention as he prepares for his title shot against Jose Aldo at UFC 189. UFC President Dana White believes that McGregor may be the biggest star the sport has seen yet.

Conor McGregor is the real dealhe is legit,” White said on FOX Sports 1’s post-UFC 178 show (via MMA Junkie). “He is a force that I have never seen ever. Bigger than Brock Lesnar when he was here. Bigger than any of the fighters we’ve ever had. Yes, (he’s bigger than Georges St-Pierre). I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Still, White should pull back on the reins when declaring McGregor the biggest star the organization has in employment. Rousey has crossover appeal that she’s already flexed and can touch places that McGregor will never reach.

First, she has the ability to capture the attention of women throughout the world. Rousey is the first female fighter that the organization has embraced. Whether it is appreciated or not, her gender allows her to reach a fanbase that is beyond the reach of nearly every person on the UFC’s roster. Rousey has already started showing that reach, such as the opportunity she had to speak at the SXSW conference during the “UFC: Women Breaking Ground inside the Octagon” panel.

Second, Rousey is beginning to garner attention in other aspects of the entertainment industry. She had a small role in the major film Furious 7 and also has a role in this summer’s Entourage (via Variety). These two projects, along with others in the future, shows that she is growing beyond a sports icon.

Third, Rousey is already a champion. McGregor has the difficult task of defeating Aldo in Brazil before he can claim the full spotlight of the featherweight division. Rousey has already reached the pinnacle of the sport. With five defenses of the UFC women’s bantamweight title on her resume, she continues to gain fans each time her hand is raised in victory.

The UFC needs to promote all of their fighters in hopes to build the next major stars of mixed martial arts. When history is complete, Conor McGregor may hold a special place on that list. However, Ronda Rousey is clearly the biggest name that the promotion can feature at this point in time.

Matt Brown to Face Surging Tim Means in UFC 189 Welterweight Clash

A welterweight showdown between Matt “The Immortal” Brown and Tim “The Dirty Bird” Means has been added to July 11’s UFC 189 fight card, according to an announcement on Fox Sports 1’s America’s Pregame.

A welterweight showdown between Matt “The Immortal” Brown and Tim “The Dirty Bird” Means has been added to July 11’s UFC 189 fight card, according to an announcement on Fox Sports 1’s America’s Pregame.

Brown is coming off back-to-back decision losses against Robbie Lawler and Johny Hendricks, while Means puts a four-fight winning streak on the line in what will be the biggest fight of his 11-year professional career.

Most recently, Means forced George Sullivan to tap out at UFC on Fox 15 with an arm-triangle choke, establishing himself as a dual-threat fighter in the UFC’s 170-pound division.

Should the fight not reach the ground, though, fans could be in for one of the most entertaining and unique stand-up battles of the year.

Means boasts 16 career victories via TKO/KO, while Brown has scored the knockout in 12 out of 19 career wins. While the numbers alone are impressive, what makes this bout so interesting is the style of each fighter.

Both Means and Brown are incredibly comfortable in the clinch and at close range, firing off with vicious standing elbows and short punches that fluster and rock opponents. It’s an unorthodox approach, but both men have used it to great effect in their professional MMA careers.

In addition to the matchup’s stylistic intrigue, this UFC 189 showdown also offers Means a grand opportunity to launch into the upper echelon of the welterweight class.

While he’s currently unranked, a win over the No. 5 Brown will undoubtedly perk up some ears and put the division on notice.

Conversely, a loss will show he wasn’t quite ready for the division’s top 10, and he’ll be forced to go back to the end of the line to feast on the division’s lower tier once more.

As of now, the UFC 189 fight card is as follows:

Stay tuned to Bleacher Report as the card continues to take shape.
